iCM Forum's Favorite Action Movies

Posted Image

Here you can post a list of your favorite action movies. A given movie does not have to be considered an action movie by IMDb or any other authority - if you feel that it is an action movie, you may add it to your list.

Rules:
  • Feature films, short films, documentaries, miniseries and TV episodes from anthology series where the episodes are unrelated, are allowed. TV series, TV specials and video games are not allowed.
  • Lists have to be created on either IMDb or iCM. Please make sure your list is set to public.
  • Lists can be either fully ranked, unranked or partially ranked. The latter means that the top x is ranked and the rest is unranked. If you do not write any comment about your list, it will be considered ranked.
  • Every entry can only be listed once on your list.

The deadline is October 11th 2016, 23:59 Anywhere on Earth.

Scoring System:

#1: 100 points
#51: 50 points
#101: 25 points
#n: 100 / 2 ^ ((n-1) / 50) points

Half-life = 50

Action Lists on iCheckMovies:

Official:

100 Classic Martial Arts Films
Action
Action! The Action Movie A-Z

Unofficial:

Ric Meyer's The Top 100 Kung Fu Movies

(for more, see post #5 in this thread or the Action Challenge)

If anybody knows some more action lists, feel free to post them here so I can add them to the OP.

About the scoring system: this is my first poll ever, so I'm going to need some help there. We should probably decide on the half life once there is a decent amount of lists submitted.

I was overly selective for a change. And for the most part no war movies, animated movies or westerns. I guess an action movie for me has to be something more or less visceral.

Here are some pretty action-y titles that you are liable to miss because they aren't tagged as action on IMDb:

all Sergio Leone westerns safe for 'For a Few Dollars More'
A Touch of Zen (1971)
Death Proof (2007)
Interstellar (2014)
Gravity (2013)
Deliverance (1972)
Collateral (2004)
Drive (2011/I)
Tetsuo (1989) (and other films by Tsukamoto)
and you may also want to consider silent movies with performers Ó la Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd, very few of those are tagged as action.

Well, I looked at the lists Chris posted above and it contains the following films:

Le samoura´
C'era una volta il West
Taxi Driver
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo
Paths of Glory
The Godfather
The Godfather: Part II
The Thing
The Night of the Hunter
Le salaire de la peur
Out of the Past
Alien

These are just my top favs that I noticed, but out of these personally I would probably consider only Leone's westerns and Le salaire de la peur (and Sorcerer) as action. Original Alien is more like horror, Cameron's version is the true action.

as I wrote in the challenge thread: imdb definition:
Should contain numerous scenes where action is spectacular and usually destructive. Note: if a movie contains just one action scene (even if prolonged, e.g., airplane-accident) it does not qualify. Subjective.

Seems that there are extremely many contributors on imdb that haven't read a single one of these definitions.

Personally when I nominate I will only look at the primary genre. There are several action comedies that I personally only will vote for as comedies as the laughs are the most important, not the excitement.

An easy way to remember. Could Michael Bay have made this movie?

Right, I think I'll go with the "primary" genre definition as well.

I guess car chase/race movies don't qualify, then, unless they crash into a lot of fruit stands and into each other enough for shit to blow up real good.

I think ignoring most great action movies just because Michael Bay couldn't have made them is very much missing the point of this list.

Bay makes bad action, but some of his tropes are imp°rtant in the genre. Or else you might actually be watching Crime or a Thriller.
Explosions, spectacular scenes and extensive martial arts are the only surefire way for me to pinpoint action films. Everything else goes into subjective territory

and yes, just as comedies action is subjective. But it's probably easier to say which ones aren't action than a comedy since humor is extremely personal while action is physically there on the screen.

I don't agree with a lot of the tags on imdb (Spring Breakers: Thriller: A Cruel Picture, The Assassination of Ryoma, Canyon Passage, Remorques,Ghost Dog, etc). Borderline with stuff like Harakiri and Ran (didn't add them yet but may do so in the future). RYM seemed to be better for this.

Also included my 7/10s or else this would be a very small list.

Oh, yeah, I think of anime (without seasons) more as 'mini-series' than 'TV series'. I'll delete it though.

A number of his other early movies are also underrated and quite fun, but not good enough for my list.

By the way, now that you're here - could you hook me up with a scoring system and half life? :P The average list length so far is 102 (with only ten lists submitted).

and I have never rated an action movie 10/10, so this is all my votes on 9/10 and 8/10. Yes, just 56 movies, but I'm strict on what I call action.

With an average length of around 100, the regular halflife of 50 is fine. Just put the 100 points for #1 and halflife of 50 in the txt-file and you should be fine.

I've already seen several movies on other lists that are definitely not action movies in my opinion, such as Rocky, Raging Bull, and a couple of westerns. However, everyone has their own idea about what constitutes as an action movie and what doesn't, and I won't veto anything.
