iCM Forum's Favourite Thriller/Suspense Movies!

Posted Image

The deadline will be 10 December 2016.

  • Put your list on IMDb or iCM. If you're not able to, post a list of IMDb-urls here and I will put it on IMDb.
  • Shorts and mini-series are allowed.
  • TV-series are not allowed - exceptions for standalone episodes that can be seen as a separate movie.
  • The list can be any length. It can be ranked, unranked or partially ranked. Partially ranked lists should be ranked till number X and unranked beyond X.

Scoring for ranked lists: Half-life = 50 (can change depending on average list-length)
#1: 100 points
#51: 50 points
#101: 25 points
#N: 100 / 2 ^ ((N-1) / 50) points
Scoring for unranked lists:
Every film on your list receives the same number of points (the average of what they would have received if your list was ranked).
Scoring for partially ranked lists:
Until number X, the scoring is the same as a ranked list. After that it's the same as an unranked list.

Participants = 17

Again this is highly subjective. I'm not going to debate on what counts as thriller/suspense.

Yes, I don't get any wiser with the imdb definition either

Thriller
Should contain numerous sensational scenes or a narrative that is sensational or suspenseful.
(and should only sometimes be accompanied by Mystery and/or Horror)

Sensational can mean a lot of things.

Just go with gut-feeling.

Probably the broadest category so far, a crossover of many "thrillers" (psychological and/or crime, generally), horror, science-fiction, action, film-noir and even drama films.

Ok, so here's what my gut-feeling generated so far:
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls066362472/
Ranked (albeit arbitrarily) and tentative, since I'll continue adding stuff and adjust based on other lists.

Man, that category is so fuzzy that I don't think it's even worth a poll.

Same. This is just going to be the horror poll with a few other stuff like Le trou. Hell, even the horror list had stuff that I would consider to be a thriller rather than horror like Duel.

Again this is highly subjective. I'm not going to debate on what counts as thriller/suspense.
I'm going to focus on crime films and exclude supernatural horror and scifi. I do like the idea of this poll. In literature thrillers and detectives are clearly distinct genres, completely different from horror etc. There is an overlap with a film like Psycho, which is a thriller and at the same time the beginning of the slasher film, a subgenre of horror. I don't like vague genre descriptions like "a film that gives you a thrill". I prefer a description like "suspenseful crime story". I realize that TV guides and film websites often don't make a clear distinction, but to me a thriller needs a plot around a crime or the threat of a crime.

Here's my list. I've included some episodes of crime series that can be viewed separately.

Working on my list now, but this is soooo hard. IMDb-tags for thriller are useless for this, so I'm just going through my fav-list and remove what I don't consider a thriller. But the word "suspense" is killing me. What does it mean?Almost on top of my fav-list is Stalker. When I watch it, I'm constantly feeling suspense. But I wouldn't call it a thriller. I think I'll just go for suspense in crime, action or scary stuff. That means I'm removing Stalker.

Well, I'm removing everything where another genre is the main one. So basically all horror is left out except for psychological thrillers.

What the two E-users said. I was about to give it a half-assed shot anyway, making a list by just adding whatever happens to be classified as thriller on IMDb and sort them by overall quality like an idiot, but just seeing those first few titles the whole endeavor immediately started to look too pointless for even that level of effort.

If many people feel that way, should we even continue with this poll? I don't want to spend time on something that will produce a useless list.

I don't have a problem with the fact that some movies might also appear in other genre list, since most movies fall in different genres. And also not with the fact that some people might disagree with the inclusion of certain movies by other users, that's all standard part of the game.

I actually feel the that way as well about this, I don't quite see a point in the effort of filtering "suspense" films if IMDb "thriller" tag is useless.

How about a little discussion about the genre? What does and doesn't constitute thriller, and why? Without a more straightforward definition, this genre really is very broad.

But I'm not sure I'll participate, because I feel more or less the same as Etti, Ebby and PdA.

Definitely, as this this is a great learning opportunity on how and why to compile lists. The imdb tag is so widely used that one has to focus on one's own intuition and understanding.

I tried to get a mix of genres and go for films that I felt had a good mix of thrills, suspense and mystery.

Nope, not doing this one. Too much overlap with noir, horror, and action lists.

My horror list and my thriller list only have a few titles in common (Psycho, Les Diaboliques). If the plot revolves around committing, solving or preventing a crime I call it a thriller. The main character can be a detective, an ordinary person in danger or someone planning a crime. Horror to me is about monsters like werewolves, vampires, dangerous animals, serial killers (slasher), blood and gore, physical deformity, or the monsters inside your head in case of psychological horror.

A thriller to me is about suspense, anticipation and tension. While horror to me is more about fear, schock, uneasiness and uncanniness.

I mostly agree with this. I avoid horrors, but I usually enjoy a thriller.

I use imdb genre tags as a guideline, but I keep my own genre tags in my spreadsheet because I often don't agree with the collective wisdom of which genre each film falls into (plus it's often trolled, as we've seen with some of the recent imdb list updates).

I'll submit a list.

I'm planning to make my list this weekend, but if you, Joachim, want to abandon this poll since there is so little participation in it, I understand and won't take the trouble of making a list.
