Posted Image

Goal:
Watch as many movies as you can that fit into the Sci-Fi and/or Fantasy genre. If you are in doubt whether a movie counts or not, just ask.

Rules:
- A feature film (anything over 45 minutes) counts as one entry.
- A total of 60 minutes of short films counts as one entry.
- For Mini-Series/TV series (45 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For Mini-Series/TV series with shorter episodes, the 60 minute rule applies.
- Rewatches allowed.

Challenge runs from January 1, 2017 to January 31, 2017

I will be concentrating on the Degrees of Separation challenge, but I probably will see some Sci-Fi and/or Fantasy along the way. So, I'm in as well.

Rick Mayall was very obnoxious in this. I know that is intentional, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

1. Miracolo a Milano (1951)
Catching De Sica in an unusually whimsical mood was a nice way to kick off the challenge. I didn't always follow the child-like logic of it but it was a delight to watch nonetheless.

2. Kingu Kongu no gyakushu (1967) a.k.a. King Kong Escapes
Yea, it's kind of derivative of the original King Kong and is extremely cheesy, but seriously, who cares? You still get some primo Kong kaiju, and that's enough dammit!

3. Cloud Atlas (2012)
Hm... How can something be breezily entertaining and ludicrously convoluted at the same time? This is how.

4. Freaky Friday (1976)
Pretty standard body swap movie. Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster both acquit themselves well in their mother/daughter, daughter/mother roles, and everyone learns a lesson.

Fun movie, although a bit too heavy on the CGI. Dan Fogler as Kowalski was by far my favorite character in this.

I'll try and watch as many as I can...

01. Stranger Things ep.1 7/10
02. Stranger Things ep.2 7/10
03. Stranget Things ep.3 7/10
04. Stranger Things ep.4 7/10

Not too bad at this stage, but it's a little smothered by its references and not really trying to bring anything new...

05. Passengers, by Morten Tyldum (2016) 7,5/10

Beautiful science-fiction movie... Too bad the plot gets silly at the end, as it was probably deemed too slow by test screenings. But overall a good movie for any SF lover.

5. Excalibur (1981)
I know this movie has its fans, but it comes off way cheesier than it probably intended to be. The sex scene in full armor especially looks ridiculous. Also the way it was filmed and edited gives off strong ren fair vibes. Honestly I'd rather just watch Disney's Sword and the Stone.

6. Between Two Worlds (1944)
This was an interesting Twilight Zone-like premise that unfortunately feels a little overly stagey and takes a little too long to get to the point. At about the halfway point when the passengers realize what's happening, it picks up more.

Going to the moon - some advance on Melies, anyway. Despite the date it's silent, though the soundtrack is pretty sophisticated (there was a sound credit, so I guess it's the original).

7. The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007)
So.... mediocre... The kid in the lead role was obnoxious and a bad actor. Poor Ian McShane looked bored the whole time.

8. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973)
Always nice to kick back with some good ol' Harryhausen stop motion. Like many of the movies his effects appear in, it's imminently entertaining while they're on screen and fairly plodding when they aren't. Even the characters at the end just wanted to sit and watch the cool stop motion. You could see the disappointment in their eyes once it was over and they had to do something again.

9. Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005)
This was surprisingly decent. At first I was weirded out by Josh Hutchinson's flat acting style but it made sense later. Dax Shepherd was quite good and the movie took a darker turn at times than Jumanji. I actually thought this was better, having more substance.

10. A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935)
This is one of my least favorite Shakespeare plays anyway and some of the cast is certainly not doing it any favors. The effects used in the fantasy sequences look cheap but they work I guess. Rooney straight up irritated the shit out of me every time he was on screen though.

6. Alicia en el pueblo de Maravillas / Alice in Wondertown (Cuba 91)
A satire on Cuban socialism which was banned shortly after it was released. The link with Alice in Wonderland is intentional (as the opening & closing credits make clear) but it doesn't follow the plot of the book.

7. Planetata na sakrovishtata / The Treasure Planet (Bulgaria 82)
Surreal animated riff on Treasure Island, nothing like the similarly-titled Disney film.
