Maybe I'll do it backwards chronologically (without rewatching). It's 32 movies, so 1 1/7 movie everyday.

I'm in, this is my favorite challenge.

Some day I will finish all of TCM's 31 Days of Oscars by the end of it, but that will not happen this year. I have seen 272 out of the 355 leaving 83 left to see. I have four of these already on my TiVo and I am going to record 23 more that my local libraries do not have on DVD.

I will also try and watch as many of this year's nominees as possible.

1. Timbuktu (Fr/Mauritania 14)

Tried this a couple years ago and it was too much for me. Now I decided I needed to watch it in honor of refugees from ISIS and dishonorof those who summarily change the rules for their own aggrandizement. (It helps to have read The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu in the meantime.) Some lovely scenes of quiet resistance

I stocked up a few Oscar nominated films to watch for this challenge.

1. Manchester by the Sea (2016, Kenneth Lonergan) - Nominated for 6 Oscars 2017.
--- Quiet drama dealing with sadness and guilt. They could have brought a lot more life to this besides the random snippets out outrage, but the quirky emotional scenes brings it to life and makes it one of the stronger dramas from 2016, which is one of the reasons it got all those Oscar nominations. It's up there, but I prefer more noise to my movies.
7/10

2. Moonlight (2016, Barry Jenkins) - Nominated for 8 Oscars 2017.
--- The Moonlight (2016) only shines from a half-moon for me. Basically because I dislike how directors today compete over who can be the most vague with their storytelling. I've rambled about this before and here I go again.

We are in a generation without a soundtrack. Just think of the 60s and what made those films feel so damn cool. Or the jazz infested films before that. Or the synths of the 80s. Now it's all about creating an ambiance. Whatever cool music there is it only serves as fragments to break the monotone sounds with the flow of imagery, in what's basically become storytelling in slow montages where acting has been transformed into staying mostly mute while posing, expressing emotion so subtle that there's nothing there in the bland and pointless world of the camera.

I'm not saying the story is pointless. I appreciate that one. It's sweet in a confused environment. It's just the way it's told in caricatures which make it such. But that's todays generation for you. Less is less, and less is good, because, by God, if we would want to provoke any emotion outside of our introvert way of communicating.

Extended rant: Films are often way too serious these days, and for no apparent reason, message or goal. Stripped of personality, always downplayed to the max, feeling sterile. It's like bankers (or any other dull office person) has relocated to movie making....
5/10

3. Arrival (2016, Denis Villeneuve) - Nominated for 8 Oscars 2017.
--- Stunning, if not a tad bit dull.
6/10

4a. A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2015, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) - Won 1 Oscar 2016 - Best Documentary, Short Subject. 5/10

4b. Extremis (2016, Dan Krauss) - Nominated for 1 Oscar 2017 - Best Documentary Short Subject. 3/10

01. La La Land (2016) 10/10 - 14 Nominations (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Score, Song, Song) - The first two production numbers do have an old-school film musical feel to them that will probably lull you into thinking that is how the rest of the film will be. I prefer "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" to "City of Stars," but I think the real highlight is the piano love theme. I really liked it, but at this rate I would place it behind Arrival and Hidden Figures and ahead of Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.

02. The Lego Movie (2014) Rewatch to break in the new Blu-ray player 10/10 - 1 Nomination (Song) - And now I have had "Everything Is Awesome" stuck in my head for two days. The movie feels a bit rushed once they get to the break in explanations/scenes, but then adds a part to the movie that makes it great.

03. The Jungle Book (2016) 7/10 - 1 Nomination (Special Effects) I was not really liking it, but I came around in the second half. "Bare Necessitates" fit in well, but "I Want to Be Like You" was totally out of place in that scene. Having watched the animated film a long time ago, I remembered the basic plot points, which hindered it because I was like, oh yeah now the part for the monkeys, etc. The special effects were pretty good, but I would give it to Doctor Strange at this point.

04. The Late Show (1977) 9/10 - 1 Nomination (Original Screenplay) I am not the biggest film noir fan, but I really enjoyed this one and I am surprised more people have not seen it. The best part is the character interaction between Art Carney and Lily Tomlin.

1. Room (2015) - Very effective film. One of those films that makes you uncomfortable, you just want to sink your head into your hands. It remembered me of "La Vitta e Bella" but where that film tried to by funny and charming, this film was dead serious. An interesting aspect is that "Room" happens almost entirely through Jack's perspective. This means two things:

1. The film rests on the shoulders of Jacob Trembley which does give a rather believable performance. Impressive.
2. The kidnapper is not at all central to the film.

Number 2 is greatly appreciated and refreshing. Also - SPOILERS - the fact they escape 1h into the film caught me off guard. I was pleased that they really wanted it to be a character driven film. However, what I thought would be more interesting (life after escaping), ends up being somewhat predictable and the score which punctuates the film is generic and manipulative. A small complaint of mine is that the whole "gimmick" presented in the trailers of the Universe created by Brie Larson's character is not visually presented but spoken about. While we do get a very complete conditions of Room, the "Universe" is not explored and is quickly dropped. When Jack actually manages to escape, his moment of blissful observation of the world is incredibly grey. I get that this is not a happy moment per se but I think a kid who has been confined to a Room his whole life would be more amazed.

All in all, a very worthwhile watch.

Won - Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Nominated - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay
