I know you guys are just settling in here and you probably haven't had time to decide yet, so no rush, but it would be really appreciated with some heads up about the years for the coming polls, preferably the next two like OldAle used to do.

We're working on that. Hopefully at least the next poll will be announced soon, and I agree that it would be preferable if we could start planning two polls ahead.

This is perhaps the weakest year for international cinema, leaving almost the entire list American while Europe and Asia was burning. Hoping to get some great recommendations from this thread.

1.The Grapes of Wrath (1940, John Ford) 10
2.His Girl Friday (1940, Howard Hawks)
3.The Letter (1940, William Wyler) 9.5
4.Pinocchio (1940, Hamilton Luske & Ben Sharpsteen)
5.The Long Voyage Home (1940, John Ford) 9
6.The Thief of Bagdad (1940, Ludwig Berger & Michael Powell) 8.5
7.Dívka v modrém / The Girl in Blue (1940, Otakar Vávra)
8.Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940, John Cromwell) 8
9.Foreign Correspondent (1940, Alfred Hitchcock)
10.Strange Cargo (1940, Frank Borzage)
11.Gaslight (1940, Thorold Dickinson)
12.The Mortal Storm (1940, Frank Borzage)
13.The Sea Hawk (1940, Michael Curtiz)
14.Pride and Prejudice (1940, Robert Z. Leonard)
15.They Drive by Night (1940, Raoul Walsh)
16.Rebecca (1940, Alfred Hitchcock)
17.The Great McGinty (1940, Preston Sturges)
18.'Northwest Passage' (Book I -- Rogers' Rangers) (1940, King Vidor) 7.5
19.Christmas in July (1940, Preston Sturges)
20.City for Conquest (1940, Anatole Litvak)
According to Wikipedia there were almost 40 Chinese movies released in 1940, but I haven't a clue how to get a hold of them.
I have a feeling very few of those Chinese films are available. Majority probable lost forever. That's the case for so many of Asia's films from those (pre-)war years. Only one from 1940 China I've seen is Kong Fuzi [Confucius] (1940). A curio with some appeal, though didn't fall into favor to my conventional tastes.

Yeah, non-English speaking cinema was hurting bad because of the war. So much that only films from the "wrong side" had something to offer, with the German scene delivering some chilling stuff with Der Postmeister (1940), Jud Süß (1940), Das Herz der Königin (1940), Operette (1940), Die Rothschilds (1940), Bismarck (1940), etc. Italy had some fun films like San Giovanni decollato (1940), Maddalena... zero in condotta (1940), Dopo divorzieremo (1940) and my favorite... the fascist swashbuckler - Il pirata sono io! (1940)! Japan, while no way near any other year, they did have Nobuko (1940) & Tabi yakusha (1940) which had almost more to offer than any of the "good guy" countries. France was probable the strongest one of those with Paradis perdu (1940) Battement de coeur (1940) & De Mayerling ŕ Sarajevo (1940), but a big slump compared to previous years.

The next two polls have been arranged.

The next poll is 1981, which will be run by Rufus-T.

After that it will be 2005, run by gromit82.

So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on.
Wouldn't this encourage people to pad their ballot with films they really don't like that much, just so their top film gets more points?
It's a method we started using two polls ago, in order to reward voters who had seen more movies. If it turns out to be a bad idea, we could change it for future polls.

Have people from the Classic Board been invited to this? I'd imagine that lots of the people who signed up here have forgotten about it by now in all of the uncertainty over the IMDb board and where the poll would be posted.
About 70 of the regular voters were specifically invited by private message from farne.

It might be a bit too annoying to work out, but a compromise could be to still start at 20 but scale down based on list length, so a 5 film list would be 20, 15, 10, 5, 1, or 20,16,12,8,4

No, just no. As I have already disclosed. I don't vote for mediocre films. So if this poll is going to punish me just because I want some quality on my lists, I'll never be part of this.

What does that have to do with my suggestion? I don't know about the other people with 20 film lists, but mine is all at least very good films. 17 are 8+ and the remaining 3 are 7.9s. I agree with you that one should only vote for quality films, but people have seen different numbers (and types) of films so it's understandable that there's a desire to have those who have seen more films and have more films they consider worthy carry a little more weight.

I hope all the others make the hop as well. Oh, and I must reply to your thread on French noir. I saw a few days ago that you have it up here. I'll have a little think about some of my faves.

Greetings my hommes et femmes fatale!

Imdb Message boards are dead! Long live I (l) Movies !!!!

SUPERB
1 THE GRAPES OF WRATH

EXCELLENT
2 THE PHILADELPHIA STORY
3 THE THIEF OF BAGDAD

VERY GOOD
4 REBECCA
5 FANTASIA
6 PINOCCHIO
7 HIS GIRL FRIDAY

GOOD
8 WATERLOO BRIDGE

WORTH WATCHING
9 ALL THIS AND HEAVEN TOO
10 THE GHOST BREAKERS
11 THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT
12 FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT
13 THE LETTER
14 BROTHER ORCHID
15 REMEMBER THE NIGHT
16 STAR DUST
17 AND ONE WAS BEAUTIFUL
18 TORRID ZONE
19 GASLIGHT
20 PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

also WORTH WATCHING: THE GREAT DICTATOR, MY FAVOURITE WIFE

PREDICTIONS? - Tough call - If forced to choose I guess REBECCA the most likely, but the Steinbeck adaptation rightly has many fans, there's a brace of Disney and a trio of much loved fast talking comedies, a Chaplin, a Bette and a gorgeous fantasy adventure to contend with.... and that's just from my ballot. I'm sure I've forgotten some heavy weights. EDIT SHOP AROUND THE CORNER was the big one I forgot - didn't work for me - sorry :whistling:

OBSCURITIES

Not too many but a shout on these three

STAR DUST is a rather beguiling look at the Hollywood Machine - here in the benign form of good egg talent scout Roland Young from "Amalgamated Studios"- although it does acknowledge many don't make the grade.... a must for Linda Darnell & John Payne fans, here both at their loveliest

AND ONE WAS BEAUTIFUL a solid sisters in love with the same guy drama

REMEMBER THE NIGHT - Given pedigree this not as well known as it should be.He's a state prosecutor and she's a shoplifter forced to spend Xmas with him. If you have ever seen a movie before you'll know the outcome but as its Stanwyck & MacmUrray in the leads, Michell Leisen in the director chair and a Preston Sturges script you'll have a lot of fun on the way.

Hope it OK but I alerted the classic board on imdb2 to this board and the ballots just in case anyone missed the info distributed on imdb before the message boards shut.

Any newbies here for this game, please do also consider participating in the long-running, similar-but-different and lacking-a-catchy-name Awards Game, which I run.

This month it's 1925. future months will feature more popular years ;) and the schedule is in the first post here

Ad over.
Yeah, I'll try and take part. I'm a bit rusty on 1925 though, so may have to wait for a better year. Have you thought about adding a production design category?

I'm not really keen to add more categories tbh. Participation has been low lately, esp in the 'smaller' categories (supporting roles, music, etc) and I don't think there'd be enough votes to make it worthwhile.
