iCM Forum's Favourite Japanese Movies 2017 edition
:circle:  RESULTS  :circle:

Posted Image
Japan is of course one of the biggest and most loved movies countries. The land of Ozu, Kurosawa, Mizoguchi and Kobayashi, and so many more. The land of anime, samurai-, horror-, Kaiju- and yakuza movies. In short a land that has something to offer for every type of film buff. The last edition of this poll was held four years ago, so it was time to do this again. List length and half-life are respectively 200 and 30, since that was used in the previous edition of this poll. Without any further ado, I present you our 200 favorite Japanese movies.

Please feel free to discuss the list, the films, and any entries that you're happy or unhappy about, whether you submitted a list or not, but please try to be courteous when doing so. When quoting a post with images it's best if you remove the image unless it's directly relevant to what you're posting

This list was made thanks to these 64 participants

P.S. I got the aka-titles from iCM, but those aren't always correct; if you see something wrong, tell me and I will change the title.

Great to see a movie make the list becaue of one's own vote. Still, the General and the Emperor should get more appreciation.

Too bad I forgot to vote for Gost in the Shell 2.

I've long debated adding it to my watchlist. I think I have 10 Japanese films left on my watchlist, and if I added just a few more J-titles, Kiru would be one of them. Afraid to Die, Sword of Doom, The Naked Island....

I am quite surprised that Silence did not make the top 350 (??) or whatever the cut-off was last time. I realise that the Martin Scorsese remake has brought a lot of extra attention to the film, but it has been out on DVD (from Masters of Cinema) for years and I saw it three or fours years ago myself when it was nominated by someone for the Doubling the Canon exercise.

And [eek] to think that Goshu would have not made the list without my help. Cool to know that my votes made a difference though!

It's even worse; I used the complete list of all 569 nominated movies from last time to compare the rankings, so it didn't get a single vote last time even.
The cut-off for the results list was 200 last time also.

So... are you going to give a complete list of all films with at least one vote afterwards? I'm very curious to find out how The World of Kanako and Grateful Dead performed since they are both somewhat obscure recent films that a bunch of us former IMDbers have nevertheless seen due to them featuring in the last Film General Film Festival (I'm assuming they haven't cracked the top 200 since you have said that every film from here onward received 5 or more votes).

I have a question for 5 people who voted for Neon Genesis Evangelion (and anyone else that has seen it). Is it a standalone film or do I have to watch the anime TV series prior to it?

On an unrelated note, I kind of regret not ranking at least 10-20 of my favorites.
