iCM Forum's Favourite Chinese Movies
Posted Image

The deadline is 28th May 2017
Countdown till deadline

  • Shorts, mini-series and TV-episodes from anthology series where the episodes are unrelated, are allowed. Tv-series aren't allowed.*
*Imdb will be leading in this, but if you have good arguments exceptions to the rule can be made in consultation
  • Imdb-lists or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
  • Lists can be any length.
  • Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
  • Your list may be ranked, unranked, or partially-ranked. In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.
  • In case of coproduction, if you're unsure if a movie is eligible, please post here.

List length and halflife to be decided later. Probably 150 and 25.

Eligible country-tags on IMDb:
- China
- Hong Kong
- Taiwan
- Tibet
- Macao

Some help:
Movies you rated on IMDb from China, sorted by your rating
Movies you rated on IMDb from Hong Kong, sorted by your rating
Movies you rated on IMDb from Taiwan, sorted by your rating
Movies you rated on IMDb from Macao, sorted by your rating

Official iCM lists:
The Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures
Golden Horse's 100 Greatest Chinese-Language Films
Asian Cinema: A Field Guide (1-76 + 356-459 + 633-675 + 767-772)
LoveHKFilm.com's The Best Hong Kong Films Ever
UNESCO's Memory of the World: National Cinematic Heritage (129-143)

Looking for a volunteer. Who wants to count participants with me? I don't want to get into the same situation again of forgetting someone's list. I'd like someone to count. No need to keep track of all lists, just so I can check if I have enough lists in the OP when I update it.

Both extremely excited and extremely fearful about this poll. I love Chinese cinema (HK and Taiwan included), but I'm afraid general knowledge is severely limited, which might have a serious impact on the final list.

Edit: oh, and I would include Taiwan/HK ... so many co-productions there that it would become a complete mess real quick.

Hong Kong didn't join China before 1997, so personally I will not nominate anything from 1996 and earlier, but anything later I will.

Based on China's official policy Taiwan and Tibet are part of China, so they might as well count in the challenge.

edit:
Hmmm: I see my list is 4 movies long. If you want to add all of Hong Kong just to get more variation, I will not argue.
(my list is 4 movies regardless, since I have never given anything from HK more than 7)

Yeah, good point about the co-productions. We'd probably get lost very soon.

I didn't mention Tibet, because there's no IMDb-tag for that. For Taiwan there is.

Well, imdb is user-generated

There is few tibetan shorts and features on youtube, so they do exist, but those I checked are all unlisted
https://youtu.be/BU4oSIGfJ8A for example. (The english subtitles drop out from time to time, so probably not recommended to watch)

Tibet's status to China is the same as Greenland's status to Denmark, and we listed Greenland in the Nordic poll :)

Sure, if you add Tibetan movies to IMDb they'll be eligible.

What about Macau? It should be included also.

The original idea behind including Taiwan, HK and Macau, when it was discussed in the future polls-thread, was of course not meant as any kind of political statement about Chinese claims on those territories, but simply because they are all too small to do separate polls about. And because like Onderhond said there are so many co-productions it would become a mess quickly.

Just to play advocate of the devil here, but the films themselves are quite different in tone and style. There is some overlap of course, but stylistically these are very different film countries.

I say we should include both. There's some overlap and co-production, so it will be easier for everyone and there will be more variety.

I do need to explore more Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong films, so I'm looking forward to see how this list ends up looking like.

The easiest way to do it to minimize the chance of mistakes is for you to keep a list of users who submitted a list. Once in a while I'll update the OP. I'll post a list of participants in alphabetical order and put a number on that spoiler-tag. If you keep track of the participants as well, you can easily check if the number is correct. If the number isn't correct, you can compare your list of users with mine and inform me.

They seldom get distributed here. (I did a seach. There have been 23 chinese movies in cinemas in the last 20 years)
But this isn't anything special. My top list for South and Latin America was 5 titles. If the movie isn't UK/USA or Nordic, or big name from Spain, France, Italy or Germany they wont show them. (Unless they have won the Palme d'Or, Golden Bear or nominated for Oscar)

And when I only nominated movies I've given 8-10/10 the pool is small.

But Dalian Wanda Group just bought one of our cinema chains, so there will probably be more in the future.
And the deadline is still some weeks away :)

You might as well add Golden Horses to the OP?

In relation to Singapore: You might just want to consider using Chinese languages as your guideline instead of the actual countries; a fair share of Malaysian titles for instance are produced in a Chinese language and could become eligible together with Singapore. This also solves the issue anyone might have in regard to the distinct cinematic identities of Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong etc.

I was also thinking about Singapore and Malaysia. If we ever have a southeast Asian poll, they would both make more sense there, though. And while there is a lot of influence from China/Chinese in those two countries, they also have large influences from India on top of their local Malay culture. I don't think Tamil-language movies from Malaysia would be included in an Indian/South Asian poll, for example. Plus, Chinese-Malaysian filmmakers don't always make their films in Mandarin/Cantonese/etc. Many make English- and Malay-language films as well.

Chinese-language poll would kind of work (somewhat similar to the French and German polls we've done), but then you have countries not traditionally associated with China that have made Chinese-language films (Canada has made a few recently, for example), so that gets murkier. Plus, would English-language films made in C/T/HK/M not be eligible, then?

My suggestion would be to limit the poll to "historic China" or however you would word it, and keep it to the existing countries/territories mentioned: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau (and Tibet).

As a newbie 'round here, I'm curious about how the final results are compiled. I see from the previous Japan poll results that points are allocated - presumably it's something along the lines of the way the Year-By-Year polls that were carried over from IMDb's CFB?

Hua Pi (2008) Painted Skin - 6
