Goal
Watch as many documentaries as you can through December.

Usual Rules
- Rewatches allowed
- A feature film (Anything 40 minutes or over) counts as one entry
- A total of 60 minutes of short films counts as one entry
- For TV & Mini-Series (40 minute episodes or longer), each episode counts as an entry
- For TV & Mini-Series with shorter episodes, the 60 minute rule applies

Challenge runs from December 1st, 2017 - December 31st, 2017

Stats & Formatting
In a bit of solidarity with the Conquering the World challenge this month, I'll be tracking countries for this challenge - but I can only be as accurate as what's reported in this thread (I'm not able to look up/verify/fill in missing info). So please help me by including the film's country along with title and year. Also:
- Title (year, Country) is the preferred format
- For TV episodes, please use "Series Title: Episode Title" as the title
- New posts are preferred over edited posts

All time leaderboard for Documentary challenges. 61 people around here have ever participated in any documentary challenge. Allisoncm is the only person to participate in all five documentary challenges; HVM and cinephage earn honorable mentions for having participated in four of them. tourdesb plays hard - two wins in two challenges.

If you mother-effers who are making 150+ movies the new standard to win a challenge could take a break, that'd be swell. I actually want to try and win this one :)

Some recommendations of <100 check docs worth checking out:

80 Blocks From Tiffany's
Birthplace
Ornette: Made in America
Route One USA
Nobody's Business
Seventeen

Similar recs of underseen gems appreciated!

I'm in. I watch a ton of documentaries anyway. I recommend subscribing to HBO for a month free and watching as many of their documentaries as you can. That's what I did this summer and it was fantastic.

Don't worry, sebby. I don't intend on breaking 100. Don't know how many I'll get, but I regularly try to catch 2-4 a week during a non-challenge month.

Well, this will be my third challenge. I'd love to win one too, but can't get close to 150+... especially during the Holidays. I love to do maxwelldeux's challenges because they are run so well and the stats are fantastic. Will shoot for knocking out some of the official badges bronze, silver, and gold levels as time permits.

As usual I keep everything I own but not yet seen in my watchlists. Still have a few more I haven't sorted through yet though (and one of my piles just fell down...)

That was a bit more than I expected. Well, I wont see all those :)

Do you have the numbers for a top 20 scores as well maxwelldeux?

Um, no. Because I plan on winning this. :whistling:

Some of my recs:

I Am Jane Doe (2017) - About sex trafficking. My wife works in a non-profit to combat human trafficking, and I've done some volunteering in this area. I also happen to know a couple of the people in this doc.
Pandora's Promise (2013) - Really informative doc about nuclear power.
Fantastic Lies (2016) - Documentary about the Duke University lacrosse team's rape case. I remember the entire team being vilified in the media, but it took me watching this doc to learn that it was all false. (Not a sports doc - FYI)
Control Room (2004) - [on the 500<400 list] Doc about Al Jazeera and its process getting information during the early parts of the Iraq war. I was 22 at the time this came out, mired in studies, and I thought Al Jazeera was a news front of a terrorist organization. Learned a lot from this.
The Fear of 13 (2015) - Nice simple story. About a guy falsely convicted of a crime.
Get Me Roger Stone (2017) - Terrifying doc about US politics right now.

I'm in although I don't expect to be competing for the top spot as I have another challenge this month (Christmas/Doll Movies) as well as a lot of non-doco FTVs on loan from a friend. I'll try and get a reasonable amount watched anyway.

My "deep cut" challenge recommendations for the Documentary challenge are ...

Enemies of the People - Rithy Panh has held most of the attention for Khmer Rouge atrocity documentaries, and deservedly so, but don't let that overshadow this excellent doc in which the filmmaker interviews Khmer Rouge #2 Nuon Chea without revealing until the end that his own parents were killed by Chea's regime.

Comrades in Dreams - Cinemania has long been popular on this forum and moved out of the 500<400 only after breaking 400 checks. For fans of that movie, I recommend Comrades in Dreams, which profiles four theater-owners from distant corners of the world.

But wait .. there's more!!! Check out the Frederick Wiseman special Blocho deep cut recommendation of the month:
Basic Training - OK, I'm no Wiseman expert. I've seen only five or six of his movies. But that includes the movies usually regarded as his best, and Basic Training deserves to be part of that group.

I love watching documentaries, so this is one I've been looking forward to (although I need to keep the holocaust docs to a minimum... those'll burn me out FAST). With the holidays, I doubt I'll be able to watch as many as usual so I'm not setting any lofty goals or anything.

Tricky question for you maxwelldeux ... :cowboy:
Any rule for super-long documentaries ? do they really count as one or would a rule like "every full hour above 2hours counts as 1point" apply ? alternatively if the documentary is divided in parts, would the parts count as one (above 40mins, basically like tv/mini series) ? eg Chinese doc Tie Xi Qu 9h11min has three parts

If it's one check it's one point.

I have both seen a 7 hour doc for the Horror challenge and a 8 hour for the war challenge for just one measly point. Don't see any reason to change this now. (Is it listed as mini on imdb, then of course the rules for miniseries aapplies)

Nobody is forcing anyone to see them.

If you want more points for them, we have the Long Film Challenge

I agree with albajos. If it's not a miniseries it's a movie and a movie is one point as long as it's over 40 minutes. Even if it's 24 24 Hours

I agree, a long doc is still one point. You can always balance them out with shorter docs if you like (may I once again suggest Birthplace :whistling: )

Yeah, go with what you check on ICM. If you can check individual parts, count each separately according to normal rules. If it's just one long-ass doc, it's just one point.

I'm hoping the holidays and challenge fatigue will slow some of you down. I've not hit 100 in a challenge before so that will be my goal (actually, I don't think I've even hit 80). We'll see if that's enough to win. Probably not, but a man can dream.

Heh. 100 is my goal, too. But I'm definitely going to hit a wall the last week of the month, with Xmas, my 5th wedding anniversary, and New Years all in there.

Let's get this show on the road, shall we?

01. Bo Burnham: Make Happy (2016, USA) - 6.5/10

I'd never heard of this guy before, but it seems he's got a pretty strong, culty following. Certainly one of the more unique specials I've seen in recent years, but it's quite uneven and veers too far into meta-land at times without a good enough pay-off to justify the cutesy self-awareness. Still, I laughed here and there and appreciated the effort enough to like it. I might try to check out one of his other specials before the end of the month.

1. Amanda Knox (2016, Rod Blackhurst, Brian McGinn) - I always felt a connection with this case because Meredith Kercher went to the same university as me and was murdered on my birthday while I was there. Pretty crazy that it also happened to blow-up into one of the most documented crimes of the 21st century. I thought this doc would be a bit trashy but it's actually well produced, and includes important footage and recordings from the investigation along with interviews with several key people (including Knox and Sollecito). Many viewers seem annoyed that it omits key evidence from the prosecution, which is true but I still don't think the film is shamelessly arguing for their innocence. I wasn't sure before the doc whether I think they are guilty and I still don't know now. The bigger problem is the way that poor Meredith herself has been almost completely swallowed by the media storm and now seems to be little but a footnote to "the Amanda Knox story". Anyway, I'm a sucker for true crime and I found this very gripping.

I believe a precedent was set with the aforementioned special being part of the Documentary series in the ICMFF. So yeah, I'd say they count.

Concert films do show up on doc lists pretty frequently, so I would think they'd qualify as well.

I believe a precedent was set with the aforementioned special being part of the Documentary series in the ICMFF. So yeah, I'd say they count.

Concert films do show up on doc lists pretty frequently, so I would think they'd qualify as well.
aight  i guess not too many would be keen on separate stand-up challenge anyway
