Goal
Watch as many movies as you can that fit into the Sci-Fi and/or Fantasy genre. If you are in doubt whether a movie counts or not, just ask.

Rules
- A feature film (anything over 45 minutes) counts as one entry.
- A total of 60 minutes of short films counts as one entry.
- For Mini-Series/TV series (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For Mini-Series/TV series with shorter episodes, the 60 minute rule applies.
- Rewatches are allowed.

Challenge runs from January 1, 2018 to January 31, 2018.

In, modestly -- I'll focus more on the fantasy side.

It looks like all the Batman movies will be streaming on NF US come January.

This challenge may work well with the low rating challenge so I will probably do both. Sci-fi is one of my favorite genre's. I will try to average 1 a day.

Would it be possible to lower that episode time limit to 40 minutes? I ask because of those darn pesky "hour long" episode that usually clock in right at 42 or 43 minutes...

Thanks for hosting, btw!

Might go for bronze in the non-IMDB lists (11, 21 and 8 movies left respectively) and potentially platinum in the IMDB lists (7 left in both)

I'm in. The Sci-fi lists are among my worst lists, and they are small enough, I want to go for platinum on them (or close to it.)

Official Sci-fi list multitask (Films that are on both of the sci-fi lists.)

1. Stinger (2005) 1/10
There's many movies like this, in which a ragtag band of stereotypes battle a carnivorous monster in a confined space, but you'd be hard pressed to find one cheaper than this. Complete with some of the least convincing CG in cinematic history, woefully bad acting and lighting so bad you can barely see what's meant to be happening half the time. Worse still, it's far more often boring than it is amusing.

1. Welt am Draht: Ep. 1 (1973)
2. Welt am Draht: Ep. 2 (1973)

I wonder how my experience of the film would have differed had I not read the top-rated comments on the movie's iCM page first. Even knowing the twist though, I actually preferred the first blissful ignorance first episode to the more paranoid second episode. Whatever the case, I absolutely love the visual style of the project; fluid camera movements and tons of (thematically relevant) reflective surfaces. Reminds me a lot of Fassbinder's much-underrated Despair.

3. Coherence (2013) REVISION

I had wanted to revisit this one pretty much ever since I saw it (a couple of years ago) and this Challenge was the perfect opportunity. Once again, I didn't think terribly highly of the film's first act, but as the film progressed, it was interesting to see the characters put the pieces slowly together knowing full well (from my earlier viewing) what was going on. And the ending still left quite a punch. Great example of how to make a compelling science fiction movie with zero special effects or action sequences.

1. Predator (1987) (Rewatch)

Perfect first viewing of the year. This year we'll be able to see the new Predator movie written and directed by none other than Shane Black, who plays Hawkins in this 1987 version. If anyone can make a good Predator movie at this point, it's Shane Black.

1. Plan 9 from outer space (59)

About this being "the worst movie ever made:" - No one who has seen "Revenge of the Toilet" (which my son made when he was around 12) would agree. But then, I used to wonder why I never made any "Worst-Dressed Woman" list.

The introductory spiel sets the tone, all right. The conclusion is gloriously muddled, but (whew!) the peaceniks are foiled again. What struck me most was the voiceover narrative - guess it took awhile for the filmmakers to realize they weren't doing a radio episode of Inner Sanctum.

1. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978)

One of the comments on ICM nailed it - it's basically a poor version of Airplane! with killer tomatoes. Terribly done, but super fun and funny.

To paraphrase Ludacris, what's your sci-fi/fantasy?

Decent start to the challenge. Had a 1950's feel to it, not sure if that was on purpose though.

Sure, I think that's how we usually handle it.
Does this mean that TV episodes are counted according to the length of the time slot that they originally ran in, e.g., a 27 minute episode of Suspense from the 1940s and a 21 minute episode of a present day US network series would each count as 30 minutes? Just asking for clarification purposes, I'm okay either way.

I still have so many episodes of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman to watch that adding one to each hour block of TV episodes might help me finish the series this year. I enjoy it, but the plots tend to be basically the same in almost all episodes, so if I watch 15 or 20 episodes in any challenge I am doing really well.

I'd prefer to keep it simple and just set the limit a little lower.

2. Uchu kara no messeji (1978) - 7/10

In space 2 people can hear you scream!

This is my 4th film directed by Kinji Fukasaku his films average a 6.5 rating from me. The film itself was pretty fast flowing from start to finish. It was silly in places but I found it fun and entertaining. I watched it with the original Japanese soundtrack rather than the dubbed English version (which I always try to do). Random fact from the movie is that is had Vic Morrow in it, who is Jennifer Jason Leigh's dad!

Not seeing the love with this one. The English title of this Italian movie is Mill of the Stone People. More horror than sci-fi in my opinion and I'm not a big fan of horror.

2. Arrival (16)

Second try on this one. First time the DVD was so dark I couldn't tell who was talking, and turned it off. For some reason I didn't have that problem on streaming (Amazon Prime). I'm glad I finally saw it. - especially for linguistic reasons, the role of time is likewise intriguing, and well-integrated into the rest.

1. 20,0000 Leagues Under the Sea (Stuart Paton, 1916) - It's cool that they had underwater scenes, but ugh, this was a slog.

2. It's A Wonderful Life (Frank Capra, 1946) - Thank God his wife didn't have to become a librarian instead! Still a fantastic movie.
