Happy 2017! Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll looking back at 2017. The years we picked are usually at least 10 years old. We are doing this poll for the recent year 1) to bring on the new year, and 2) to celebrate the movies from the year just ended.

A little background for those who are not from CFB or not familiar with this poll

The annual poll originally was not part of the Year-by-Year poll. When I first participated in 2007 at Classic Film Board at IMDb, it was hosted by Binx_Bolling and was called "Ten Best Fun Fest". After he past on, zetes took over in 2009 and called it "Best of". A few years ago, zetes and the regular host of the Year-by-Year poll OldAle1 combined these two activities and had the annual poll taken place in January. We are continuing that tradition of having this annual poll.

The Rules

The rule is slightly different from our usual poll. In addition to poll the films, we will include polls for the 4 acting categories (leading actor, leading actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress).

The eligible films are the following:

1) Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

2) Listed as 2017 according to IMDb

3) Listed according to IMDb prior to 2017 if the film released in 2017 in your country. These usually are 2016 films and sometimes 2015 films. If earlier than 2015 and I do not notice any 2017 release at any country, I may disqualify it unless you can justify the inclusion in your ballot.

You may list up to 20 films for the film poll, no minimum number.

You may list up to 10 performances for each of the 4 acting categories. If you are not sure whether a performance is a leading or a supporting role, put it in the category you deem most fit. The split will consolidated later to the category with the most points follow by number of mentions and by higher ranked.

If you have an actor or actress in multiple films in your list, please list their performances for the different films at different slots since they are different performances.

Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

The scoring for the performances is the same as films except that the scoring is for lists up to 10 slots.

Some resources

2017 films you've rated on IMDb

2017 movies you've checked on ICM

There are a couple of useful threads on this forum that discuss 2017 films:

http://www.icmforum.com/topic/10371594/1/
http://www.icmforum.com/topic/10359598/1/

The Deadline

This poll will run for through Feb and will close on Saturday March 3 midnight Eastern Daylight Saving Time or whenever I sign on the Sunday.

You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes.

Don't worry too much if you have not seen enough films. You are still welcome to participate. The result turned out to be quite decent every year with enough participation. The poll may help you keep up to date the recent films. It helped me every year.

After this poll, we will return to our regular Year-by-Year poll with 1948, followed by 1983.

Thank you and happy listing!

I'm a bit of a Nazi about following "official" film years, heh, so I'm sticking with IMDb dates. I'll very likely make some changes over the next month as I continue to watch stuff, but this is already a great top 20:

1. Mudbound (Dee Rees)
2. The Florida Project (Sean Baker)
3. Summer 1993 (Carla Simon)
4. Mademoiselle Paradis (Barbara Albert)
5. A Ghost Story (David Lowery)
6. Happy End (Michael Haneke)
7. Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan)
8. You Were Never Really Here (Lynne Ramsay)
9. The King (Eugene Jarecki)
10. Gemini (Aaron Katz)

11. Loveless (Andrey Zvyagintsev)
12. Winter Brothers (Hlynur Pálmason)
13. Cuba and the Cameraman (Jon Alpert)
14. Phantom Thread (Paul Thomas Anderson)
15. Sweet Country (Warwick Thornton)
16. Kingdom of Us (Lucy Cohen)
17. The Meyerowitz Stories (Noah Baumbach)
18. Wallay (Berni Goldblat)
19. Foxtrot (Samuel Maoz)
20. Get Out (Jordan Peele)

Full ranking of all films I've seen: https://letterboxd.com/flaiky/list/2017-films-ranked/

I'll probably add actor lists later.

Extremely early for me to even assemble a top 10, but will be back with an attempt later today. Don't think I have seen more than 30 so far though, and will really need to use the next few weeks to catch up. Luckily I think I will be able to see my most anticipated film of the year, Happy End, at the cinema early next week, but Phantom Thread won't open until mid February, and Faces Places and Hmyz will have no chances to be seen.

How is it continuing? It's a Limited Series Event, and hence would count under Mini-Series, no?

Yes, it is limited and seemingly just for the one season. It is still a continuation of the 1990 series, and could continue on another time. This is much like the X-Files and 24 returning. All of these are meant to be serial. Even a show that lasted only one season like Firefly or Invasion, they all intended to be serial and not a long movie broken into parts. I just don't see it as a Mini-Series.

However, after doing some reading, I realized that David Lynch did screen the premiere episode at the Cannes Festival. With the screening and the praised reviews and that now two people have brought this up, I can make it an exception to allow it.

Cheers. :)

Apart from Cannes, I also remember reading there were some theatrical screenings in L.A. It's also in the official Top 2 "Films" of 2017 of both Sight & Sound and Cahiers du Cinéma, if you find those reputable sources.

After watching a lot of films over the weekend, I finally have a strong top 10. Will continue to seek out more over the next week or two. Have a good bundle.

My top 10 via Letterboxd

Will add it here when I feel I'm ready, and perhaps have a top 20.

I have tried to avoid including January 2017 releases that I already voted for in last year's poll (e.g. Split).
Since there is no rule against voting again, feel free to include a film from your last year's list back in CFB into this year's list as long as the film is qualified.

Talking about Split, I thought that is Shyamalan's best since The Village, and that is a mighty long time.

Perhaps a top 5 film of 2017 for me is still unreleased! Under The Cover of Cloud, which I saw the extremely long 5-6 hour cut of. A guy I know edited it.
The list as it stands:
1. Mukoku (Kazuyoshi Kumakiri)
2. On Body and Soul (Ildiko Enyedi)
3. Hikari (Naomi Kawase)
4. On the Beach at Night Alone (Hong Sang-Soo)
5. Close-Knit (Naoko Ogigami)
6. Psycho Delic: Findings of Psychoactive Experiments (Charles Barnes)
7. Legend of the Demon Cat (Chen Kaige)
8. Our Time Will Come (Ann Hui)
9. Blade of the Immortal (Takashi Miike)
10. The Sleep Curse (Herman Yau)
11. The Dark Tower (Nikolaj Arcel)
12. The Forest of the Lost Souls (José Pedro Lopes)
13. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Luc Besson)
14. The Snowman (Tomas Alfredson)
15. The Party (Sally Potter)
16. Lucky (John Carroll Lynch)

That list is really pushing it... every passable film I saw from 2017.
Although I did see one fantastic and certainly top 3 worthy film from 2016 that was only released in my country in 2017... but I won't list it on principle.

Hmm. Sounds a bit [mjeyds], but you're running the poll, so okay - will do. Hard to turn down an opportunity to give more recognition to Anya Taylor-Joy.

Re: Shyamalan - I hated The Village myself and I thought The Visit was just as good as Split, maybe better. But these last two films of his are possibly my two very favourites of his - with the notable exception of Unbreakable, the only film I ever really loved from the time when he was considered a promising young director.

Just want to add in that as I am storming through 2017 releases to get a strong list 2017 has suddenly managed to beat 2016 - this could be a spectacular year!

I would disagree... have barely seen any movies that wowed me from last year, and 2016 had 3 films I consider better than any 2017 release... although one of them I only saw yesterday/the day before (it's just after midnight here)

Yes, these things are always relative and fickle. If I see a film I'd rate 10/10 from 2016 it would immediately win. What were the three 2016 films?

For my part though it is interesting as I always create watchlists for each year, based on expectations for the films - usually based on the director and the type of project - and having seen far more of my original 2016 watchlist, it is very interesting how quickly 2017 seems to match it. It is however also worth noting that I have already somehow seen most of my most anticipated 2017 films, which is also very unusual. Now I just need to watch Phantom Thread when it opens at the cinema this month, as well as Loveless (which is already out) and I will have seen all my top 10 most anticipated. Now that is rare. Usually not done until mid-year if that.

Apparently you've already seen - and favourited - my #1 pick from 2016, A Bride for Rip Van Winkle.

Ah yes, it’s absolutely phenomenal, in my top 5 of the year.
