In Hollywood ...

If you're looking to Hollywood for art and entertainment from 1948, then I hope you like crime films and film noir, because there's lots of them. Key Largo, The Naked City, Force of Evil and They Live by Night all made the Top 20, as did Hitchcock's Rope.

A couple of notable westerns also moseyed into town, Ford's Fort Apache and Hawks's Red River, as well as interesting lesser-known oaters, Yellow Sky and the noirish Blood on the Moon.

In Pinewood (mostly) ...

Britain's big guns were out in force this year, not only Powell & Pressburger with our poll-topper, but Carol Reed (The Fallen Idol), David Lean (Oliver Twist), the Boultings (Brighton Rock) and Laurence Olivier (Hamlet). Not all the prestige British films fared so well in the poll, with The Winslow Boy only just making it onto the short list and Anna Karenina just missing out. And only one person voted for the Ealing epic Scott of the Antarctic (me!).

In Italy (mainly) ...

Much of European cinema still hasn't recovered from WWII at this time, but the Italian neorealist movement is in full swing. And I think we can say that the forum contains plenty of fans, as Ladri di biciclette, Germania anno zero, and La terra trema all feature in the Top 20.

Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll. The next poll will be 1983, followed by 1969.

Interesting to compare this to the 1948-titles from our freshly updated favorite movies list:

33. Ladri di biciclette
126. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
129. The Red Shoes
195. Rope
204. Letter from an Unknown Woman
625. Germania anno zero
808. Red River

Top 7 is the same, but in a different order. Surprised to see The Red Shoes on top.

Thanks farne, the comparison with the award and little write-ups make it extra interesting.

Didn't expect Letter From an Unknown Woman to beat The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, or the Red Shoes to come out on top against Bicycle Thieves, happy with both though.

Thanks farne! Personally glad to see The Red Shoes on top, though to be fair it's been a long time since I've seen the bike thievery flick. Happy to see a few votes for the Ozu, it deserves more notice I think (it's help if it had US commercial availability I suppose), and very happy to see Krakatit make the list. I think that's a film that has the chance to get a lot more attention in the future - noir + atomic age SF + Ruritanian romance, there's something there for everyone.
