Film of the Week #225: Vale Abraćo AKA Abraham's Valley (1993)

Summary:
Ema is a very attractive but innocent girl, so pretty that cars crash in her presence. Young marries Dr. Carlo Paiva, who she is not attracted to, but is her father's friend. They move to the Valley of Abraham. Carlo loves her, but decides to sleep in a separate room, to avoid waking Ema when he has to return late at night. With time she begins to feel unhappy about her marriage so, with all the freedom she has, she takes a lover.

The narration and the length of the film (3 hours) were not a good combo for me. By the time I got to the end, I could not recall the majority of narrated facts. Some of the narration seemed irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. 6/10

Saw it whenever it first screened in Chicago, mid-90s. It was probably my first or second Oliveira - O convento might have preceded it, don't remember - and I had a hard time with it as I remember. Beautiful but stodgy is how I'd describe my dim memory of it. But I've grown to really love Oliveira now so I'd be interested in a re-watch some day.

i am not a huge fan of this one either. i was puzzled that portuguese fans seem to consider it oliveira's best film

++ could not remember much about this one

I seem to recall there being a plot about someone being the unobtainable daughter being married off for convenience and spending most of the movie being unhappy.
