Chinese Challenge
Posted Image

Goal:
Watch as many movies as you can that are in Chinese, made in China (Hong Kong, Taiwan also included), directed by a Chinese director, set in China etc. If you are in doubt whether a movie counts or not, just ask.

Rules:
- A feature film (Anything over 45 minutes) counts as one entry
- A total of 90 minutes of short films count as one entry
- For Mini-Series (45 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For Mini-Series with shorter episodes (25 minutes or so), the 90 minute rule applies.
- No rewatches

Challenge runs from 1 August 2011 - 31 August 2011.

The Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures list may come in handy. Anything on this list counts.

Some other lists:
100 Greatest Chinese-Language Films (Golden Horse)
100 Greatest Chinese Films of the 20th Century (Asia Weekly Magazine)
Best Chinese-Language Films of the 2000s (dGenerate Films)

I wonder how much Chinese noir there is? I probably won't have time for this challenge, but I wish you all luck!

here is my watchlist, but as I'm also planning on doing the noir one and I won't have that much time for either, my goals are rather simple. I want to get a bronze on the Chinese list (need 17) and get a plat in martial arts (need 6).

A Gun, A Woman and a Noodle Shop. It's a terrible (but pretty!) Zhang Yimou remake of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple.

It sounds interesting. I just saw Blood Simple again in February on my last day in Paris. It was fun to see it with subs, but I'm not sure I could handle a Chinese version!! :/

I've been wanting to go through WKW's filmography in order and get back to martial arts a little bit, so this challenge is right up my alley.

I'm in.

I'll start on Aug 1.

Since I'm currently watching Les Vampires, I'm planning to include Irma Vep -- French movie starring Maggie Cheung in the title role. If the moderator doesn't think that counts, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Based on the definitions that other people have put out, I'd think it would definitely qualify -- it supposedly takes place in China, and there are all sorts of interesting colonial/race things going on in that film...

You could also count it for the noir challenge -- it's on TSPDT's 250 quintessentials, and referred to as a noir in lots of other places on the web. :)

I might as well start on August 1st too. Won't watch too many, and I certainly have no expectations about being among the front runners, but it will be an extra reason to check out some cinema I otherwise would have waited with.

My watchlist has only some overlap with Kaspar's, so I'm posting it here, along with some movies I've already seen in case they help anyone. I've listed at least some of the lists each one is on, if you can decipher my codes.

Does not count, even remotely. But you can keep it for September French Challenge. There is nothing even remotely Chinese about Irma Vep. Very good film though.

Except if the movie is supposed to take place in France. I'm afraid not. But you can watch Moontide (1941) in August as it is a Noir.

Irma Vep: "Rene Vidal, a director in decline, decides to remake Louis Feuillade's silent serial "Les Vampires." Believing no French actress can match Musidora as Irma Vep (an anagram for vampire), he casts Hong Kong action heroine Maggie Cheung, though she speaks no French. " From IMDb storyline.

But never mind, I'll watch it now. I have plenty of movies for the French challenge.

To be honest I think the rules should be slightly stricter, that way we wouldn't have to have these debates.

That only movies made by or set in China/Hong Kong/Taiwan counts. China themed can be interpreted in so many ways. As for me I'll only watch movies produced by these countries.

Yeah, you can include reviews/ratings etc if you want to, but you can just post the titles. It helps if you also keep a full list in each post of everything watched so far (preferably in spoiler tags). You can see http://s15.zetaboards.com/iCheckMovies/topic/7030214/1/ for examples..
