Count me in...just to confirm: it's okay to watch films that are French-LANGUAGE? Like films set in Quebec or Belgium or Senegal (all with dialogue entirely or almost-entirely in French, not English or Wolof or whatever)? Just wanted to check before I go rearranging my queue.

Yeah, well, I assume they would count anyway. It is a French challenge so it would make sense for movies in French to be allowed..

Oh, also I just copied (again) Kaspar's original rules from the first challenge, so if anyone has any suggestions to do with rules, list suggestions or anything like that, suggest away.

You can count me in too, altough I'm not sure how actively I'll be able to participate. Next month is going to be a lot busier than this one. Anyhow, I've been making a watchlist for the challenge, and I'd appreciate recommendations. I'm almost a total newbie to French cinema, but I have liked the few movies I have seen.

French challenge watchlist
Spoiler: click to toggle

I looked how many films I have seen from the Times list and the answer is 10 (excluding two shorts).

So help me :P

This list seems very poor... is Amelie really the best French movie ever made? :o
Sure Besson is better than Bresson...

I'm in. I'm having surgery mid-month so might either be unable to watch movies or unable to do anything else.

Here again is my list of films on French history (pre-WW II) in case anyone wants to do the history challenge concurrently. (Don't know why the last 3 are crossed out.)

Kasparius posted links to a couple of different French lists he's been working on. Those links are in the "August and September Challenges" thread. They might have some inspiration for you.

And, I'm in for the challenge.

I don't think anyone has said a good word about the list, but the good thing is, is that everything on there gets you a check! :)

I'm in. I've actually started unofficially, I'm watching the Césars list. The Times List is not a great list in itself but has a lot of great or really good films on it. I'll list the ones I think people should avoid at all costs:

À Ma soeur (Fat Girl)
L'esquive
Les triplettes de Belleville (that might be a personal one, but it drives me up the wall)
Comme une image
Les parapluies de Cherbourg
37 2 le matin
La cage aux folles
Le gout des autres
Ma femme est une actrice
Les demoiselles de Rocherfort
Sans soleil
Diva
8 femmes

Obviously this is based on my personal taste, but I really can't stand these.

That's good thing then "off" - you mean "up the wall"?
I am not an English native speaker, just wondering if "off" is commonly used in this sense.

I was just wondering what is it that put you off in Les triplettes de Belleville - it seems like a nice little film to me.
Les parapluies de Cherbourg does irritate me quite a bit indeed..

That is the way I feel about L'illusioniste. I really don't "get" Tati. And Tati-esque films are no better.

My mother loved Tati, but I don't get him either. Yes the Triplets of Belleville, No to Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. Les Demoiselles de Rochefort -- think I happened to hit it when I was in just the right mood to enjoy it. It's certainly one odd musical.

Sheesh, people! I feel compelled to stand up and say not only does my mother love Tati, but she passed on the gene to me.

Also, on Kaspar's list of hates, I liked (didn't love) Triplets of Belleville, and do love Le gout des autres and Diva. (Diva might be based on nostalgia, but still.)

I see it's going to be a lively challenge. Hurrah!

Please count me in for this,

I am not going for 80 odd but a much slower pace for this one though as I will not watch only French films for a month. If I watch 20 that would be fine, I will probably watch films mainly from the Times list where I have already seen 81. If I watch 20 that gets me a Gold for this list so that will be the target.

So, what films are y'all hopin' to watch?

Some of the stuff I wanna get round to for this:
More Renoir (particularly Grand Illusion, The Crime of Monsieur Lange, Boudu Saved from Drowning)
India Song
More Tati
More Demy (particularly The Young Girls of Rochefort)
Loooooads more Rohmer
Some Godard (hopefully Weekend, Prenom: Carmen and some others)
Finally watch some Denis
Le pont de arts
Watch some more Rivette

mmmmmm...this is gonna be FUN! :D :D :D

Beinex is on my all time shit list. As for Jaoui/Bacri, they are among the most contemptuous, condescending, pretentious, elitist assholes in France. I think some of their early stuff was good enough, but ever since people have lauded them as the greatest screenwriters of all times, they really have been insufferable.

As for Tati, I really like him a lot, some of his films are absolutely fantastic. But I do understand why some people might find him annoying, he has a very autistic streak.
