Itís that time of the year again! Itís soon December and time for another challenge. And one of the challenges for this month is the Russian challenge. The goal is to watch as many Russian movies as possible. That means either movies made in Russia, language is Russian, filmed in Russia or other. If youíre in doubt if a movie is to be considered Russian you can ask in the thread.

Posted Image

The rules are as usual:
- A feature film (Anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- A total of 90 minutes of short films count as one entry.
- For Mini-Series (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For Mini-Series with shorter episodes (25 minutes or so), the 90 minute rule applies.
- No rewatches

ICM lists about Russian movies:

http://www.icheckmovies.com/list/livejournal+russian+top+100/

http://www.listsofbests.com/list/66624-jhu-greek-eastern-european-and-russian (Kersnuffles list of russian and East European movies).

Thank you 3eyes for bringing these to daylight!

There's really only one Russian film I want to see and that's The Ascent. Not sure if I'll have access to it, but I can try.

Also on the to see list:
Aerograd and 43 others. I guess I'm in. I'll report what I see next month, even though I don't expect it'll be much.

I'm in, but I'll be lucky if I manage 15-20 in December. I'd been looking forward to it, but it's become clear that my usually-crazy December work schedule is slated to be exceptionally insane this year.

I'd like to watch more Russian cinema, but don't really want to spend a whole month watching Russian films. Maybe I'll have a Russian week in December or something.

I'm totally up for it, and I have a backlog of my own Russian DVDs that I have yet to get to. I have also been saving my last Tarkovsky -- The Sacrifice -- for many years now, but I already promised an ex-student of mine that I'd watch it and chat about it -- so I might as well make it this December.

Like burney, I'll be really busy next month, and in the last week of the month I'll be out of state, but even if my numbers are not high my enthusiasm will be. :)

If you have an easy link to Aerograd, I'd love to hear it as that's one I've been looking out for for many, many years.

Cool, not sure if I will find a link, but if I do I'll let you know.

Also, there are lots of Russian language films on the Jonathan Rosenbaum list (we're doing an unofficial challenge for December) and that might go together nicely if anyone wants to work on both.

I'm aiming for 40, December is the best film-month for sure! I have merged the two Russian lists together and are planning to watch as many of the unchecked ones chronological.

I guess I'm in, but not very intensively. 10 films maybe.

In addition to the current two ICM lists (Institutes/Russian Guild of Filmmakers and Websites/Livejournal Russian), there's an exhaustive list by Mestniy Geroi on LoB:

http://www.listsofbests.com/list/49898-aka-local-hero-s-1000+-quintessential-russian-movies

Kersnuffle also has a nice list of Russian and East European movies

To clarify my previous post: I'm in, but not going to dedicate the whole month for this. I'll set my goal to 10 films, have couple of Tarkovsky's film thad I have been meaning to see. Ballad of a Soldier and Come and See seem to pop up frequently here, so probably going to watch them too, but those aside I'm not sure what to watch so have to do some research.

I'll be here, with a modest goal of trying to work in some "spiritually significant" Russian films amidst the holiday viewing.

I noticed my schedule lately has left (some) time for movies but very little time for the internet. (I'm having a night of insomnia right now; hope that's not going to be happening too often in the month ahead. guh. I'm barely coherent.)

Oh, no! That narrows it down to only about 80% of all Russian movies!

I could never successfully get on to kg, and I assume it's all bit-torrent downloads(?), which my last-legs computer can barely handle. If anyone knows of a more straightforward link for streaming or download, I'd love to hear it.

1. Tretya meshchanskaya / Bed and Sofa (1927, Abram Room) 8.7

I'm rather shocked this even got made. Must be one of the most controversial movies from the 20's. Not sure if I should spoil, or you should discover the content yourself. Will say though that you shouldn't think of this as a comedy. Although it has several amusing aspects, and the consept at hand is rather is comically unusual it plays primarily as a drama. Great stuff. 8.5/10.

It's an awesome movie. And you're totally right: the first time I watched it my jaw was on the floor, shocked as I was that such a film was made anywhere in the 20s. let alone in the Soviet Union!

Thank you!

You guys are an awesome resource!!

I definitely don't want to abuse your generosity, but maybe I should sift through the list of Russian films I've been trying to see for years (decades, really) and post a very short list here in case some of you pros have more such tips for me.

I'll just start by mentioning two, at least, off the top of my head. Anyone know of a link to a version of My Friend Ivan Lapshin or Check-Up on the Roads (Proverka na dorogakh) with English subtitles? My Russian is usually pretty good for most Russian films, but some movies give me a harder time than others (Ivan Lapshin, for instance, is a film I own and I got about a quarter of the way through it before I realized I wasn't getting the full experience, so I stopped).

Both of these are available with EN subs only on KG. Unfortunately online streams are all RU only.. Since I know Russian I don't need subs for RU films :)

Just a little... :) I've mentioned Flicker Alley before, they are definitely worth keeping an eye on for anyone interested in old movies.

Who else would release a Norwegian silent movie on DVD in the US? Unfortunately Netflix seems to almost completely ignore Flicker Alley and has only picked up a few of their releases. I'm trying to persuade my library to invest in this set as well, but I've yet to hear back from them.
