Time for a Documentaries challenge!

Posted Image

Anything counts (including mockumentaries); from animals to oceans, to history to food and more. Not sure if a certain title counts as one, just ask.

The Goal is to watch as many Documentaries as possible.

The rules are as usual:

-- A feature film (Anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
-- A total of 90 minutes of short films count as one entry.
For TV shows:
For Mini-Series (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
For Mini-Series with shorter episodes (25 minutes or so), the 90 minute rule applies.

No rewatches

Challenge runs from March 1, 2012 - March 31, 2012.

So, any good documentary lists that could be of help in finding interesting documentaries? ICM doesn't seem to have any official documentary lists, but of course there are several unofficial ones.

100 Documentary Films (BFI Screen Guide)
International Documentary Association's Top 25 Documentaries
Current TV's 50 Documentaries to See Before You Die

I didn't look very thoroughly true these lists, but at least the first two should be decent? Are there any other noteworthy documentary lists (on ICM or not)?

EDIT: And of course there's the IMDb Documentary list, but it seems kind of dubious. Of course there are some interesting films there too.

Not sure what my goal is, although I'm shooting for bronze on the IMDB Documentary list. Currently, the number I need to see is 6, but I'll try to see all the ones that my library has (that are on the list), so maybe 7 or 8. I'll shoot for 7.

I look forward to watching many Documentaries with all of you.

A note about the posted links... I'm using an Android HTC EVO phone, and when I click the URL button, it doesn't work, so instead, I'm using the "tinyurl" system. I double checked the tinyurl links to make sure it goes to where it is supposed to go. Any errors? Please let me know.

Have you come across any other helpful links? Please post them, and I'll put it up there.

Thank you!

Since many documentaries are in TV-episode format, should the above posted rules be edited to make it more balanced, since most likely episodes will be watched a lot more than in other challenges?

I'm thinking 3 (20-30) episodes count as one. This way, don't have to worry about 90 minute rule.

40-60 min episodes, just use already established rule? Or make it, that 40-45 min. episodes, 2 count as an entry; and 60 min equals 1 entry.

And when posting these, one would post title and episodes watched, then the equivalent number.

Any other suggestions or ideas?

I'll join in. I got a few sitting around to watch. Probably get through 6-8.

Youtube seems to have a lot of free docs in their movie section now:

Also Blinkbox (might be UK only):

Hoop Dreams is amazing. The best documentary I've seen (though I've not see that many). Easily one of my favourite films of all-time.

I would advise against binging through the Up-series, there's a lot of repeating and the later documentaries consist nearly 50% of previous clips (guesstimate). I have watched one Up a month and it still feels a bit long and tedious when it revisits the story before the docu you're currently watching. For ideal viewing I guess waiting a few years between each episode would work best. :P

5. Sherman's March
6. The Gleaners and I
7. Burden of Dreams
8. Stevie
9. Murderball
10. Beyond the Mat
11. F for Fake
12. For All Mankind
13. Please Vote for Me
14. The Fog of War

Pretty much everything sebby just said, plus (not in order):
Fast, Cheap, & Out of Control
The King of Kong
The Beaches of Agnes (I'd call it a documentary!)
The Day After Trinity (I never see people talk about this these days, but it's quite good)
Koyaanisqatsi
Titicut Follies
The Cove
Best Boy
Brother's Keeper
Etre et avoir
Crumb
Grey Gardens
The Exiles (Mackenzie)
Visions of Light
The Celluloid Closet
The House is Black
The Rape of Europa
Land of Silence and Darkness
Man on Wire
Spellbound
Jesus Camp
Hands on a Hard Body (it was particularly fun seeing this in Texas...not sure how well it will appeal beyond locals)
Exit through the Gift Shop (I'd call it a doc, though it kind of blurs into performance/fiction)
Lost in La Mancha (I'm convinced that Terry Gilliam is DOOOOMED)
The War Game (I'd call it a sort of doc)
The Battle of Culloden (see: The War Game -- same deal)
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (Scorsese)
If you like Sherman's March (I noticed not everybody does!), Bright Leaves is fun

I'll probably think of five more as soon as I post this...arrrgh.

Welcome aboard!

If you're not yet familiar with how these challenges work, then I recommend that you take a look at the current and past challenges and look at in particular how titles that you've seen are posted etc.

Also, now's the time to start making a personal list of what you might be interested to watch come March 1st, and then add ten more titles to that list.

If you have any questions, please ask.

The ones in my list have been sitting in my Netflix queue for a while. For one reason or another, have an interest in these.

Let me guess, the one you saw, from my list.... Man on Wire.
