Making this thread early as a reminder (also I don't know about my internett access next week). :P

If anyone are looking for Scandinavian sci-fi for April, the three part miniseries Blindpassasjer AKA The Stowaway (1978) may be of interest. Haven't seen it myself, but it's on KG with English subs. :)

edit: on CG as well!

Awesome! I hope at least a few more are interested in participating, I'm sure no-one has seen all 180 official "Nordic" checks on ICM. :P

Didn't add filmographies to the first post, but here's three "big ones":
Ingmar Bergman
Aki Kaurismäki's feature films
Lars von Trier

I'll play. Probably won't watch a huge amount, but I'm really getting into Kaurismaki so will definitely watch some of his (coincidentally got a boxset of Ariel/Match-Factory Girl/Shadows in Paradise on the way)..and it certainly wouldn't hurt to knock off a few more Bergmans (Bergmen?).

I'll say I'm in, but I'm concentrating mostly on conquering Europe and the sci-fi challenge. But I'll get a few with the Europe challenge and might chuck in a few others. Probably aim for 10 or so.

I'm tempted to watch a few Nordic films just to break up all the sci-fi I am planning on watching. I might try and look out the iCM favourites that are valid for this challenge and watch a couple of them. That Scandinavian sci-fi mini series sounds quite interesting as well, so I may even give that a watch :)

Here's a list of ca 100 Nordic films I've seen, chronological under country. (I've mostly used English titles, and some may quibble about which country a film belongs under. Oh well.)

I put Norway first because I'm married to a Norwegian and lived there for awhile; I try to see any Norwegian films that are available. I did not, however, include the one Norwegian film I saw while living in Norway: Psychedelica Blues (Nor 69).

I've always wanted to explore more from Nordic countries, but due to limited tie and resources right now, I'm not sure I can participate.

Hey Lilarc0r,

I'll participate and watch 5.

Nicolas Winding Refn is one of my favorite directors. I like dark comedy and crime dramas so if anyone has suggestions I'd like to hear them.

1. Crime and Punishment (Kaurismaki, 1983) 6/10

Start the Nordic challenge with Aki Kaurismaki's first film. It has some good moments - e.g. the opening scene in the meat factory is rather nice, and it's not a bad take on Dostoyevsky (though only loosely based). It just lacks a bit in the characters. Particularly the female lead is too unfathomable.

2. Summer Interlude/Sommarleck (Bergman, 1951) 8/10

Bittersweet and beautiful early Bergman. A coming-of-age summer love story told in flashback makes up the bulk of the simple plot. There's strong hints of Wild Strawberries in the melancholy reminiscences and as ever with Bergman, death and depression are not far away. Maj-Britt Nilsson

2. Kjaerlighetens kjoetere / Zero Kelvin (1995) 6/10

An ice cold adventure with some resemblance to Chaplin's The Gold Rush, far from comedic though. It loses steam towards the end when it stops developing its characters and repeats things we already know that doesn't need to be told again. Great Sundquist-role here which is at least a bit different from most of the roles he plays.
