Just Let Me Know Who wants to join Up, will update accordingly

Many Satyajit Ray ones and few others i have been postponing , may try and watch em . Also some recent bollywwod and regional ones too i may watch at my own risk.
My aim would be to combine this with 1960s challenge as much as possible

I'm aiming for about 10; just trying to complete the films on 1001 and TSPDT that I have left. Hopefully I'll get back around to watching movies this month...

I'll participate. I probably won't watch a lot because I need to catch up on non-challenge films, but I'll try to watch at least 5.

I'll join in !
1 - 3 Idiots, by Rajkumar Hirani (2009) 7/10

Not very subtle, I will grant, but I like the "free-thinking" message and the actors. Also, I'm so easily moved by cheesy pictures that I was also moved by this one.

3. Madhumati (Bimal Roy, 1958) - 5/10 - I could not really get into at all, partly due to the bad DVD release from Shemaroo.

4. Devdas (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 2002) - 7/10

Devdas is really cheesy and early on I was not sure if I would make it through :) It was kind of hard not to be cynical about all the expensive sets and melodrama. Ultimately I did get sucked in and enjoyed the film for what it was - a spectacle.

5. Sant Tukaram (Vishnupant Govind Damle & Sheikh Fattelal, 1936) - 7.5/10 - not really religious but do appreciate people with strong faith or devotion and the main actor played the blissed out role quite well while performing his miracles via some primitive special effects

6. India: Matri Bhumi (Roberto Rossellini, 1959) - 8.5/10 - had that "vintage" feel but some of the sequences and interactions with animals (especially with the elephants and monkeys) were pretty amazing not to mention the ecological foresights

03. Bhuvan Shome : Interesting direction style and approach specially for Bollywood in the 60s. Some new ideas tried ,like use of animation and different editing and narrative styles. Doesnt always hit the mark , but the story in itself is light and hence enjoyable . And i always liked Utpal Dutt . The female actress as the smart yet innocent village girl was good too.

One of the Main aim for me for this challenge was to watch the following classics by Satyajit Ray :

04. Debi : Strong Religious Beliefs complicates the life of a simple housewife who is claimed to be a reincarnation of the Goddess.

05. Mahanagar : Madhabi Mukherjee gives a terrific performance , as a middle class housewife in the Big City , struggling to keep her family together.

06. Charulata : Again Madhabi Mukherjee was the soul of the movie.

07. Ashani Sanket : Depressing tale set during the dreadful famine that hit Bengal in the 40s.

08. Shatranj ke khiladi : Was a surprise . For some reason had a notion that this would be a dull one. Was wrong, Liked it.

May watch more Bengali ones this month and try some classic hindi ones too....

2 - Jalsaghar, by Satyajit Ray (1958) 7,5/10

I wasn't too thrilled about the music, but the movie's theme of egotism and rivalry is excellent.

3 - Gangs of Wasseypur part 2, by Anurag Kashyap (2012) 7/10

Pretty fun, but not really out of the ordinary...

This might be my only contribution to this challenge, but I'm very glad I was spurred to choose it for the '60s challenge.

12. Bandini (Bimal Roy, 1963) - 7.5/10 - favorite so far from this director
13. Aranyer Din Ratri (Satyajit Ray, 1970) - 8/10 - good writing and characters, realistic in the portrayal of how people interact and treat each other
14. Yaadon Ki Baaraat (Nassir Hussain, 1973) - 6/10 - some catchy songs but a little corny on the action side, another tale of reunited siblings but also revenge

I was trying for 2 a day but am falling a little behind.

3. Pyaasa (1957) 5/10

I swear that some of these foreign films are only so highly regarded simply because they're not in English. If this were in English, I imagine it would've been laughed at and either forgotten, or lumped in with various Bottom 100 classics. It was watchable, but that's about it.

I consider this to be among the very best i have seen across various languages , and being an indian it was easy to relate to the content. Its a very well written movie , dark and depressing but very realistic , with excellent acting by Guru Dutt and Wahida , really good dialogues and great music...

Guess the subtitles simply failed to get the message/soul of the movie across to you...
