Goal:
Watch as many animated films as possible. Films mixing animation with live action are allowed if more than half the film is animated.

Rules:
- A feature film (Anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- video and TV series are allowed
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry.
- For TV series (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For TV series with shorter episodes (25 minutes or so), the 60 minute rule applies.
- No rewatches

Challenge runs from 1st to 31st of March 2013.

Official lists:
Animation (IMDb)

I added a lot of them to my watchlist.

I'll join this and I'll combine it with the Japanese challenge, so expect many anime films and series. Yeah!

I'm in. I'm going to be lame and mainstream and try to work through the Disney canon, in addition to working through as much of the BFI list as possible.

If anyone's interested, here's a list of AniDB's top-rated standalone anime movies (thanks to me since I was the one who created the tag). The way the sorting works is the stuff with over 100 votes comes first, followed by the stuff with under 100 votes (<100 starts at #141). If you notice any movies missing from this list, let me know and I'll add the tag.

Thanks!

Is the number one movie really stand-alone? Isn't it a summary of a web series?

Is there a similar stand-alone tag for multi-episode OVAs?

I wasn't the one who added the tag to that movie, but I guess it can be called standalone. It isn't a summary. It's the same as the web series but with a few extra scenes.

Here's another list of standalone movies: http://www.anime-planet.com/users/chii/lists/27762

It's longer than the AniDB list, so it might be more complete (or maybe she's using a different definition, I'm not sure). I think she listed her favorites at the top, but other than that it's not in any sort of order.

There's no tag for standalone OVAs, but I can make a list for you.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I might have missed a few, so here's the full list of OVAs if you want to browse through it.

Also here's MAL's top-rated OVAs.

I like this new 60 minute rule. I guess I'll be watching a lot of anime series this month. I have 17 series ready to watch that have been on my hard drive for a long time, but knowing me I'll probably get lazy and only watch 2 or 3 of them.

I remember stumbling upon several animation guides on criterionforum.org which appeared to me to be quite extensive. Maybe someone would find them useful for this challenge.

1. Canadian, Russian animators
2. Western European animators
3. Central/Eastern European animators

1. Genius Party 2007 8/10
"Genius Party"Atsuko Fukushima 8/10 What the hell was that? Pretty amazing! With animation like that who needs a story?
"Shanghai Dragon"Shoji Kawamori 8/10 Well crafted, interesting and funny
"Deathtic 4"Shinji Kimura 6/10 I was not really impressed with either the animation nor the story.
"Doorbell"Yoji Fukuyama 7/10 I try to give an explanation but it's going really great. I keep thinking about it though, so it's a good sign
"Limit Cycle"Hideki Futamura 4/10 Utterly boring
"Happy Machine"Masaaki Yuasa 9/10 Weird, surreal and beautiful
"Baby Blue"Shinichiro Watanabe 9/10 A wonderful story and very good animation with a really great ending

2. ParaNorman - Chris Butler & Sam Fell 2012 7/10

It was fun. I couldn't really understand what is the target audience of this movie though. A bit childish for adults and maybe too scary for kids, but the inner child in my adult body liked it :)

2. Shorts - 60 min total
Den offentlige rst (1988) - 11 min
Apel (1971) - 7 min
Le paysagiste (1976) - 8 min
Refleksy (1979) - 6 min
Hotell E (1992) - 28 min

My favorite from this batch was Den offentlige rst. Also Le paysagiste and Hotell E were pretty good, but I still think Priit Prn's best film is Eine murul.

Now I've seen all of the available Ghibli films. I procrastinated with this one for awhile because I didn't like Tales from Earthsea. Now that I've seen it, I think it's one of the weaker Ghibli films, but better than Tales from Earthsea.
