Alain Resnais (April)
Henri-Georges Clouzot (April)

I was pretty sure I had seen this. But I think I may have watched a bit and turned it off or something. It didn't look too great to me either. But it has its fans.

I can see why, it just didn't work for me. On the upside, it's only 60 minutes.

Thanks! I will add the links. Also, feel free to join us if you would like. I'm interested in checking out Le Pacha and don't think that you should worry about what the rest of us think here. I hope everyone is able to check out a variety of films and at the same time check out some of the same ones to provoke discussion!

As far as Bardot goes, I can't stand Vie privée but I was interested in watching En cas de malheur by Autant-Lara. This talk could probably move to the main thread.
Did you see the dubbed version of Vie privee? I hated the dubbing, but loved the film. I hope to see En cas de malheur as well.

Moved to this thread. Yes I did see the English dubbed version. The quality of the image was pretty bad as well. It was on TCM one night. I suppose if the quality was better I might enjoy it a bit more. Maybe.

Also, up until maybe 2 or so weeks ago, I had never heard of Autant-Lara. Anyone familiar with his work?

He was a very popular french director, for a while, at the end of the 40ies until the mid-sixties.
He is most known for La traversée de Paris, a very cynical movie about the French Occupation, l'auberge rouge, a cruel tale about murderous innkeepers and an oath-tied priest, la jument verte and Le rouge et le noir, two adaptations of famous litterary works (by Stendhal and Marcel Aymé).
However, he was one of the main targets of the french Nouvelle Vague, he was accused of making film with comfortable budgets and little soul ("des films de qualité française").
The critics adopted this viewpoint, and his work was quietly and slowly getting forgotten (except for the films mentionned above).

It seems some of his films deserve to be discovered, such as Sylvie et le fantôme, le blé en herbe, le diable au corps, or Douce. I've only seen le blé en herbe, which was nice and nostalgic.
I would say his films are characteristic of the high-quality, pre-Nouvelle vague, popular cinema of that period.

Per the poll page: http://s15.zetaboards.com/iCheckMovies/topic/7299955/1/ people voted for no bonus for the French poll. The highest voted director(s) and actor(s) will be listed at the top as recommendations, but viewing films with or by these people will not count for bonus points. The game starts April 1, 2013, whatever your time zone is. :)
