I'm in.

1. Darezhan Omirbayev - Cardiogram - 8/10

Another really well done coming of age story with its same simplicity. Didn't captivate me as much as Kairat but I feel like this was more accessible, so it's probably a better one to strat with depending on your taste.

2. Darezhan Omirbayev - Killer - 5/10

Much different than his other 2 films, at least with the plot. I felt like his simple style does not work well with a crime story like this, but it was still quite engaging.

3. Darezhan Omirbayev - The Road - 7/10

Great landscapes and a great atmosphere.

It's pretty easy to find lists for films that are on lists. But lists of films with no lists? Not so much. ;)

I didn't want to participate in any new challenges this month but I can't resist. Challenges are fun.
It's also a chance to see how many unofficial checks I'll watch this month. My plan was to watch films I already have on my laptop trying to make room for new downloads. I'll start with the biggest piece of crap I've watched in 2013.

1. The Broken Tower - James Franco 2011 3/10

That was boring as hell, amateurish, with very long sequences of poem readings and a bit self-centered. Yes I'm talking about you James Franco. Oh and next time you want to be provocative,
Spoiler: click to toggle
What stupidity! I like James Franco so I'll try to forget about this crapfest.

P.S. Well... that's a negative review! But I'm not gonna edit it. This is what came naturally.

2. The Panic in Needle Park (1971)
3. Püha Tõnu kiusamine/The Temptation of St. Tony (2009)
4. Trance (2013) Interesting film, but I think it tried to be too smart/sexy for its own good. I like other Danny Boyle films better. Perhaps Lasse Hallstrom's film, The Hypnotist, was strong.

4. Darezhan Omirbayev - Shuga - 6/10

Apparently this was based on Anna Karenina, but I can't compare them since I haven't read that book. Still this had 3 interesting characters and a fairly well done plot.

5. Darezhan Omirbayev - Student - 6/10

Pretty much the same as Shuga, except that this one was based on Crime and Punishment. Perhaps I should read these 2 books?

6. Manoel de Oliveira - Singularidades de uma Rapariga Loura - 5/10

The plot can be pretty meh at times but overall I was able to get into it. Oliveira has this great talent of making even the most simple shots look so beautiful. Also he usually hires very beautiful women which doesn't hurt.

7. Hou Hsiao-Hsien - Millennium Mambo - 8/10

Seriously, are all of his films going to be this awesome? If so then I'll most likely have a huge update on my favorite films list at the end of the month.

I'm of the opinion that Millennium Mambo is his best film but it is maybe slightly different than his 80s films, so don't go into those thinking they'll be the same. His 90s films on the other hand are somewhere, funny enough, in between. And Cafe Lumiere is simultaneously a throwback to his 80s stuff and to Ozu but kind of like the last portion of Three Times. His filmography is fairly recursive, in a Almodovar or rather Kiarostami kind of way.

I'll log relevant films here just for kicks, no goal, no special effort -- just what I see in the month that pertains.

01. The Ides of March -- Clooney, 2011.

Not torturous, but not great.

02. One Day -- Scherfig, 2011.

Yawn. I did (finally) discover that Lone Scherfig is a female director, though, so hey. (I liked An Education.)

03. Phantoms -- Chappelle, 1998.

Blaaaaah. Husband's pick.

04. Orders to Kill -- Asquith, 1958.

Weird little film. The first half is a bit of a drag, but then it takes off. Paul Massie plays an American bomber pilot selected to go undercover as a Frenchman in Nazi-occupied Paris. His mission is to kill a French Resistance member who is believed to be a Nazi double agent. Massie's enthusiastic about the job, proud that he's been tasked with it, and he figures he's killed people before as a bomber, so how different can it be? He finds out. The film won three BAFTAs in its year, including best British screenplay, actress (Irene Worth), and promising newcomer (Massie). Lillian Gish has a role as Massie's mother. Far from perfect, even annoying in spots, but certain scenes are great.

I'll be watching pictures from this Fantastic Film festival for one full week before it's over. So I hope to discover many more non-checks and unofficials... :D

Mars et Avril is really interesting, visually it's quite ambitious. But it develops a poetic storyline which did not really get to me. The film has many assets anyway (Caroline Dhavernas  ), so it's quite worth a look.

I loved Kiss of the dead. It's a very classic vampire tale, with a great photography and a strong story. I also liked the erotic undertone... The cast is quite strong here (Roxane Mesquida  ). I think the movie will be appreciated by vampire buffs, but could be too much of a genre film for mainstream audiences.
