I'm in.

I've been thru a week or so of feeling a strong aversion to watching movies, but I have quite a list of German films I want to see. So at least I'll wrap up a couple of awards and make some headway on the silver for the German list.

Dieses war der erste Streich -
und der zweite folgt sogleich.

I'm in the process of teaching myself German, but I'm not yet at the point where watching movies will really benefit me. I've learned about a 1000 vocab words, and I'm sometimes able to sort-of, kind-of translate written sentences - but the spoken language is still far beyond me.

...But I'm in anyways. I'll aim for at least a few more checks from the "Most Significant" list.

I think movies in the language will always help a little bit even if you don't understand & use subs, as you get more of the sense of the rhythm of the language just by hearing it spoken. and some things may go in subconsciously..

and of course you can always watch silents and pause the intertitles (if they're in German).

Just wondering: is there a special rule for Shoah and Hitler - ein Film aus Deutschland? Officially those aren't mini-series, but they're definitely very long.

Maybe we should have a new rule, 3+ hours counts as 2 entries, 4.5+ hours counts as 3 entries, etc. For example, Shoah would be 6 entries. A rule like this might give people more motivation to watch more longer films.

Is Caché eligible for this challenge? IMDb lists 5 countries including Germany and Austria, and the director is Austrian, but it takes place in France and the language is French.

About the rules:

First, I don't feel like changing them on my own, but if they were to be changed forum-wide, I have no problem with that.

Second: This Challenge's official stance is that Shoah is a French film. And with Heimat films being mini-series according to IMDb, it only leaves Hitler as a sole super-long film. No big deal, IMHO.

Third: What counts and what counts not. I'd go for language criterion as decisive. Otherwise we may end up with all kinds of Hollywood films (Lang, the vons,...)

EDIT: Hitler - ein Film aus Deutschland (1977) gets you four points in this challenge.

I noticed some Swiss films are listed as "Swiss German" on IMDb (e.g. Höhenfeuer). Is that allowed for this challenge?

Sure it is.

And since we watch movies for fun (or is it OCD), I feel we shouldn't make that big deal out of this. I just think there are lots of interesting films in German and it would be nice to devote this space to them, since everybody mainly watches English/French/Japanese. So use your discretion, say like you wouldn't watch North by Northwest for UK Challenge, just because the lead and director were British.

pretty likeable road movie/romcom. bit clichéd with the nerdy lead & manic-pixie-dreamgirl character who brings him out of himself.

[mrmph mrmph I only wish they'd done that for the Spanish challenge - I was looking forward to watching a lot of Latin American films (sadly neglected on IMC) and then it turned out only Spain counted. mrmph mrmph]

1. Doktor Faustus (W Ger 82)
3-hour miniseries based on Thomas Mann's novel. The Faustus here is an early 20th-century composer who deliberately contracts syphilis to enhance his creative powers.

I chose it because I read the book as a teenager (being into composing myself). Didn't understand much of it - tried to read it again a few decades later but couldn't abide the turgidity of the translation (being by that time a translator). I see there's a more recent translation now.... No, but I saw the movie.

you could add on the first post that the UNESCO list also has Austrian films (#23-44) and Swiss films (578-592, but half are in French)

there's also some Austrian lists:

http://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/cfbs+top+20+austrian+films/mjf314/
http://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/austrian+films/pippo7/ (this one doesn't seem to have any particular criteria)

If I remember correctly, Latin American films were excluded because we were going to have a separate challenge just for Latin America. Then someone updated the Challenges Index and forgot about the Latin American challenge, so it never happened.

Maybe I should replace the horror challenge with a Latin American challenge when no one is looking. I wonder if anyone will notice. Or maybe we could even do the Latin American challenge this month, since no one seems to care about the Degrees of Separation challenge.

Thanks, MJF - maybe sometime next year?
(I was thinking that Spanish & Portuguese languages challenge might make sense - that would bring in Spain, Portugal and I suppose former Portuguese African colonies as well as Latin America)
I guess I should put this in the appropriate thread but I find it daunting....

2. Die bleierne Zeit / Marianne and Juliane (W Ger 81)

1. Mozarts Leben, Lieben und Leiden / Mozart's Life, Love and Suffering (1921, Otto Kreisler)
Posted Image
Decent enough Mozart biography. Nothing stands out, though the encounters with "death" had some potential. Some footage is missing, so the restoration relied on some photography - but not as much as some, and it still hung together quite well. Everything was reasonably well done, but in the end it was a tad too plain and empty. 5/10.

4. Das schreckliche Mädchen (M. Verhoeven, 1990) 8/10
a tale of fighting for justice/revealing the hidden secrets of a town, which feels familiar in some ways, but is kept fresh by whimsical style, almost reminiscent of something like Amelie early on but becoming more serious as the subject dictates. was hoping it would carry on longer, which is always a good sign.
