I'll participate, but I'm not sure what my goal is because I'll be focusing more on the Italian challenge.

Five more for bronze on the first list. I'm in, but like Michael, I'll focus on the Italian challenge.

I'm joining too.

EDIT: I have a question about films tagged "Horror/Sci-Fi" (e.g. Bride of the Monster (1955) or The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932)) . Are these eligible?

wasn't particularly planning to join, but I watched a couple today.

1. Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince (Yates, 2009) 6/10 - last one I hadn't seen (yeah I went out of order, but I'd read them anyway). it's alright, it is what it is. it was one of the weaker books as I remember & long without being as cleverly plotted as some of the earlier ones, I guess because it's more a set-up for the final one.

2. Oblivion (Kosinski, 2013) 6/10 - great looking film, great soundtrack, plot is nothing that is going to surprise anyone who has watched/read much sci-fi, it's like bits & pieces of various Philip K Dick books without really getting into the head-fuckery. Tom Cruise plays his usual bland good guy, fine for this kind of film. I doubt it'll last long in my memory but it's a decent big budget sci-fi flick. bit of a missed opportunity though, feel like it plays it very safe and could've been something more.

Feck it, I was going to avoid Oblivion because Tom Cruise, but my dad said it was good and now everyone else is saying it's good/decent.. so I might as well.

1. Kdo chce zabít Jessii? aka Who Wants to Kill Jessie? (1966) 7/10

Apparently, "If crazy associations count for anything, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's Who Killed Roger Rabbit? is an odd parallel film to this Czech fantasy."

I'll participate in this challenge. My aim is to get as much of "The 100 Greatest Sci-Fi Movies" list finished as possible. I have 9 to go for Gold, and 19 for Platinum.

First film:

1. Mystery Men (1999) One of the bizarre 90s superhero movies where studios would take niche indie comic books and turn them into ludicrously-budgeted blockbusters. This one has some good ideas, but a lot of acting talent is wasted on a formulaic script that's just not funny enough. 4/10

1. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)

Like many early talkies this movie suffers from overacting, especially the Mr. Hyde character. 6/10

3. War of the Worlds (Spielberg, 2005) 6/10
Pretty decent, delivered the big budget disaster & destruction rather well, especially in the first third, and the choice to focus on single family worked for intensity. That said there were rather too many convenient leaps of logic in order to keep the family surviving but close enough to witness all the exciting action and I especially had to knock off a point for the goddamn son surviving, even though I knew Spielberg wouldn't be able to resist.

2. Zardoz (1974) Sean Connery wonders around an illogical future that looks like a 70s hippy commune, looking as bored as I felt watching it. 3/10
3. Howard the Duck (1986) Disastrously misconceived. The performances and tone often seem right out of daytime kids TV (Tim Robbins is particularly awful), but it's interspersed with a lot of jarring adult humour, which along with all the other jokes, falls completely flat. It does build to a good climax and exerts a strong pull, like watching a car crash. 5/10
4. The Stuff (1985) The plot jumps around confusingly, and sometimes doesn't make enough sense, but it was watchable and enjoyable. The in-movie adverts have a great them song which they should have used for the closing credits. 5/10

Guess I'll join in.

01. Dark Skies [2013] - 1.5/10

I wanted to watch a bad sci-fi film of the fun variety and I got bad sci-fi of the mind-numbingly stupid variety.

This is amateur hour all around -- a lazy script, shitty acting, shitty camerawork, shitty editing, etc. Utter garbage.

1. Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010, Panos Cosmatos) 7.5/10

A really trippy retro sci-fi flick about mad scientiests experimenting with psychoactive things and a young test subject who starts to come to grips with herself and her mental abilities and flees. The story isn't that special, but the atmosphere and production design are really nice and it is quite a fun ride. Feels somewhat in the spiritual succession of Altered States.

1. Panic in the Year Zero! (1962, Ray Milland)

Feels like a 50's sci fi. The "enemy" drops the bomb on major cities in the free world. Our story follows a regular father as he balances protecting his family while trying to hold on to civilisation. Very successful in creating a recently collapsed civilisation with the budget and manages to ask what holds us all together.
7/10

Combine them both. There are a whole heap of very cheesy 60's italian sci fis.

5. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Any description of Buckaroo Banzai makes it sound a lot better than it actually is: a host of 80s cult icons in a campy sci-fi thriller that throws in everything it can think of. Unfortunately, a poor script and lack of action mean that it just becomes tiresome. 3/10
6. Puppetmaster (1989) Mostly very dull, especially for the first hour, before the film finally delivers on the promised puppet murders. 3/10
7. Kaidan (1964) Often very beautiful, with a striking expressionist style and excellent sound design that create a wonderfully eerie atmosphere. It does suffer from an overstretched third episode that unbalances the tetralogy. Individual segment ratings; The Black Hair 8/10, The Woman of the Snow 7/10, Hoichi the Earless 6/10, In a Cup of Tea 7/10. Overall: 7/10

1. Pacific Rim (2013) - 8/10

Great action sequences, great CGI, laughable acting (except for the girl playing young Mako, she was impressive).
Not a huge fan of Charlie Day or Burn Gorman in this movie, I feel like they prevented it from being a 9 or 10 out of 10.
