Silent Challenge

Goal:
Watch as many silent films as you can between December 1 2013 and December 31 2013.

For the purposes of this challenge, I'm using the Top 300 Silents rule as a guideline: True silent films (like City Lights) not made in the default silent cinema timeline (1891-1929) are also accepted. (NB: which means that I *wouldn't* count Chaplin's Modern Times in this challenge, because it's not a "true" silent; some of the jokes are dependent on the soundtrack, unlike City Lights. And you can find a bunch of 1930s silents, mostly from Japan, on Youtube.) Films receiving votes must still exist somewhere and in some viewable form. We limit the list to films that were produced to be silent films exclusively (synchronized music tracks are acceptible, but part-talkies and talkies that have only survived as silents are out).

As always, if you are in doubt whether a movie counts or not, just ask.

Rules:
- A feature film (Anything over 45 minutes) counts as one entry
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry
- The miniseries rule doesn't exactly apply here, does it?
- Rewatches allowed.

Challenge runs from 1 December 2013 - 31 December 2013.

 I thought the no rewatch rule had been put aside on the challenges...

Well, I'll be part of this anyway. Many silent movies I want to watch.

I know the horror challenge encourages rewatching and I think the noir challenge does too, but didn't know that was a more general trend. I've changed it so they're allowed now.

I'll join. My goal will be 18 films (the amount I have left until I have seen 40 films from each year of the 20s).

Got a lot of work so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to see this month - but I'm sure I'll at least manage 18 silents.

I'm in. Once upon a time I was going to finish the 100 silents list, but now that it is no more I will make what headway I can with the 2 new silents lists (can't possibly get a silver on either in one month).

I thought the total for shorts had been changed from 90 to 60 min.

Mini-series: For things like Judex (12 episodes=300m) or Tih Minh (12 episodes=418m), I guess the 60- or 90-min rule for shorts would apply. I plan to watch Miss Mend (3 episodes=250m),and would count it as 3 entries, but I won't make an issue of it if folks think otherwise.

I'm in, although I'll likely won't focus fully on it. Still 10 films should be manageable.

I've always wanted to do a truly silent challenge, where nobody posts until the month is over and there's no leaderboard, you just have to hope that you're watching enough. It would be the movie challenge equivalent of a time trial where you only know whether you've won or not when the last participant posts. Don't know if it's feasible, though, but I think it would be a fun thing to try.

I'm in, but with a low total goal: 5.

with ICM that'd only work if it was a rewatch challenge (doubt you could convince people to hold off checking, even if they held off posting!)

That would be great and that might work, but I know some people check films as they watch them, so people could look at their user pages on iCM to see how they stand amongst others. But yes, it would be interesting.

True, it would require participants not to keep track of each other on iCM. If people like the "spirit" of the challenge, perhaps they could "unfriend" each other for the duration and then not keep tabs on everyone? That should make it easier not to be accidentally "exposed".

My two favorite challenges in the same month -- it's not fair!! :(

I'm always watching silents, so I'm in.

Knalds, your idea might be a fun one to try, but on the other hand I like seeing what other people are watching and occasionally talking about the movies. Your approach would preclude that.

That's absolutely true. This would also, presumably, be a challenge where everyone really tries to watch as many as they can in a given period of time (it doesn't have to be a month, it could "just" be a week).

Anyways, I just thought it was a fun little idea and brokenface's post reminded me of it. It doesn't have to be realistically feasible for it to be a fun idea to toy with.

No, you're supposed to compensate for the movie. So you'll get a point if you speak the most.

I guess I can promote my own silent list too. It's a complementary non-American silent selection made to accompany the heavily American Silent Era list. Of course, then the more diverse Silent But Not Forgotten list was made official as well - and there are certain overlaps there. As SBNF has lost/unavialable films on it, I decided to keep these overlaps however:

If I remember correctly, Le Samourai has very little dialogue, but it definitely isn't silent.

Some of the Ozu films on my list are noirs. Dragnet Girl and That Night's Wife would definitely qualify, probably Walk Cheerfully too.

Josef Von Sternberg's Underworld is another obvious one.
