I made this just to be sure there will be a Russian challenge this year. Feel free to comment on the proposed rules.

And Nopros, if you suddenly turn up, I'll happily hand it to you if you want it, of course. :)

If you'd make a rule about only Russian comedies being counted in this challenge, I'd be game...

I'm in, but will watch mostly silents.

Question: When it comes to post-Soviet films from the Asian parts of the former USSR, would these count in the oddball Asian challenge in February? It says Russia is excluded. I have one from Tajikistan (1998) I want to watch at some point.

I would think this is a more appropriate challenge for these countries, but I'm not in the position to decide if they can be watched in the Asian Challenge. Anyhow, you can watch films from any of the 15 former Soviet countries, also from the post-Soviet era.

Thanks, Gert, for making sure this happens. My two favorite challenges in the same month is cruel, but as I'm always watching silents and Russian films anyway, I'll do both!

If oddball Asian means Asian other than certain countries those former Soviet countries east of the Urals are in Asia so presumably would count as they are in Asia and not those certain countries.

The purpose of the Asian challenge is to focus on countries that don't normally get enough attention, and I think Tajikistan fits that description, so it'll probably be allowed, but the challenge rules haven't been written yet.

Edit: Although films that were made during the Soviet era will probably be excluded.

Yeah, seems clear to me that it could go in either challenge (though I haven't seen the proposed exact rules for the Asian challenge): Tajikistan is a former Soviet republic (this challenge), and it's in Central Asia (the other challenge).

You can try to sell them all you want, Monty, but I tried to tell you that seeding nothing but Russian comedies was not going to be a good KG ratio boost.

It would be if this challenge gave an extra point for each Soviet comedy you watched - who could resist such an easy way of jumping ahead in the challenge rankings?

1. Five Evenings (Pyat vecherov)(Mikhalkov, 1979) -- First, it's an odd coincidence that there are many prominent Soviet films with "X # of Days (or Evenings)" in their titles, and there are several that divide up the story's chapters with "Day One," etc.

There's usually at least a slight whiff of unpleasantness in Mikhalkov's films, but this one focuses on a small, intimate story. It does have nice moments here and there, but much of the film reminds me of the two earlier, bolder, and far more interesting films by Kira Muratova, Brief Encounters (Korotkie vstrechi) and Long Goodbyes (Dolgie provody).

2. Byelorussia Station (Belorusskiy vokzal)(Smirnov, 1971) -- There are quite a few Russian films dealing with the long-term effects of WWII, but this one is unpredictable and it's writ small -- so small at first that that itself is an unpredictable element -- but then it becomes a slow burn, quietly, patiently working its intentions. It's a moving film in the end, but there are so many elements that might not appeal to contemporary viewers that I won't recommend it. At least not unless what I've written about it intrigues you.

This gives me a silver on the Russian Guild of Film Critics list -- which, by the way, is the far more serious list as an attempt of the greatest artistic achievements in Russian cinema. This list is missing great films, and the other Livejournal list has some great ones the Critics list doesn't, but if you have no idea about either one and want to know which one is the better one, it's the Critics list.

Yes, fifth tier -- actually, 5.342, to be exact.

No, "quintessential" is a big word to use for such a large list (if that's what you're implying), but the idea is simply that these are the selections that could be said to collectively make up the body of films that represents Russian cinema. It's meant as a clear distinction from the "best" Russian films, which is not what the list is attempting.

Currently at 5.432 it should be added, since the value of quintessence is variable. As we all know.
