I wish I could focus on this - was looking forward to it-- but I MUST take a vacation from new challenges! If I happen to watch any, I'll add them eventually.

I will try and watch a few... I'm seriously lacking in that field.

01 - 25 Watts, by Juan Pablo Rebella & Pablo Stoll (2001) 7,5/10

Something between slackers and Stranger than paradise, but in Uruguay. Fun and light, but also somehow pointless...

I watched three films from South America for the Conquer the World challenge so I thought that I should post them here as well. I can combine this one with the Unesco challenge and the Conquer the world one that I'll work on.

1. Costa Rica - El Sanatorio (Miguel Alejandro Gomez) 2010 5/10

A found-footage horror comedy. Nothing special. All the clichés you can expect and very poor direction.

2. Guyana - Guiana 1838 (Rohit Jagessar) 2004 3/10

That was borderline awful. In fact it was really awful but just just for the effort I'll give them a 3. If you can find another film from Guyana, please watch that and not this piece of crap.

3. Venezuela - Sicario (Jose Ramon Novoa) 1995 6/10

It's about a kid that gets involved with the organized crime in Venezuela. It could have been a lot better. There were no big surprises. You knew what would happen. The protagonist was pretty good though and there were some good scenes. Overall I wasn't disappointed, I just expected more.

Guyana isn't in the list of eligible countries but it's in South America so I assume it counts, right?

Do you guys have room for one more participant :)

1. Nine Queens (Argentina)

The tiresome thing about this film was almost all of the scenes were close-ups.

With this check I enter the top 1000 on the Cinema Tropical list (I'm at 10/125 right now). Edit: 11/125

2.Leonera (2008) 6/10 Pretty good Argentinian film about a woman in prison dealing with custody of her son and being a woman dealing with the justice system. The end was a little impractical, unrealistic, and idealistic, but whatever!!

4. Chile - No (Pablo Larrain) 2012 7/10

They did a pretty good job by copying the whole 80's feeling in the film. It could have been better but overall it was a very nice film depicting that part of history of Chile in a simple yet engaging way.

02 - Maria Candelaria, by Emilio Fernandez (1944) 8/10

A very simple drama, beautifully shot in the mexican country. The story setting is quite interesting and unusual, sometimes I felt I was watching a documentary, but I quite enjoyed the story (even though it's a very classical drama).

I'll also watch a few :)

1. Como Era Gostoso o Meu Francês (1971) aka How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman
Funny, a bit weird...not great but well worth a watch

2. Memorias del subdesarrollo (1968) aka Memories of Underdevelopment
That's excactly why cinema-wise the 60s are my favourite period! (just cinema-wise...?)

A great road movie, tangling love and death, youth and old age, and showing us a lot about Mexico.

Let's revive this challenge a little....shall we?

Any DVDs you are planning to watch soon? I am trying to get Tan de repente, XXY, and El cielo dividido/Broken Sky from my library. A couple branches have Fish Child, but it's proving hard to find and often checked out. Hopefully, I'll find a few more throughout the month.
