Yeah, I'm in.

I just watched The Great Beauty, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone mildly interested in checking it out. It's a highly flawed film and at its worst is a masturbatory exercise in style over substance (like everything I've seen from Sorrentino), but it has a lot going for it nonetheless.

Not really actively questing, but as I'm normally always watching some recent films on the side to my questing / catching up with classics, I might as well track my progres of them here this month. :)

So, I'm in.

Here's my Top 2010s list: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls055203960/. I'm sure a bunch of people have personal lists too, as we did a tally not too long ago.

Here we go...

1. Hypothermia (2010) ★½ (out of 4)
Michael Rooker is fine in this horror film about a group of ice-fishers being terrorized by some reptilian fish monster. The film itself has some nice suspense in the early going and a few creditable instances of gore, but the higher the stakes get the less interesting the basic story becomes and the more the cast's (excluding Rooker) inability to emote ruins whatever power it might have otherwise had.

Incidentally, I will be mostly watching horror movies for this challenge.

1. Don Jon-2013: 6/10

Absolutely average, the only thing that really stood out for me was Tony Danza.

Also the accents are so fucking annoying.

Ugh, I remember seeing the trailer for that film and it might have put me off watching it for life. Just two minutes of their completely unbelievable voices was unbearable. Plus I thought the dramatic concept seemed a little outdated.

2. The Big Bad (2011) ★
A woman pursues the man who destroyed her family in an underwritten, overly stylized revenge horror that's really a 78-minute sleeping pill. It's shocking how deathly boring a film with this one's theme

It's not a bad movie, it's just...nothing really noteworthy, it's a perfectly fine 90 minute time waster if you're looking for something to watch.

Tony Danza fucking killed though.

I can buy that. I mean, obviously I thought the trailer murdered the movie pretty much completely but I rarely watch trailers and hate the way most of them are throw together anyway, so it's not like I'm rushing to condemn the movie itself. I generally like Gordon-Levitt's acting, although why he's some sort of golden standard for many of the Rotten Tomatoes crowd is completely beyond my understanding.

A female version of Dumb and Dumber with two great central performances but just not nearly as funny.

3. Darkroom (2013) ★½
A stock horror flick about deranged religious siblings who torture false confessions out of post-rehab women before murdering and mutilating them. It recycles all the cliches of its genre sans novelty, although a couple of performances are better than expected.

+1! This is not my very favorite Dardenne(s), but that's kind of like saying that this is not my very favorite of a bunch of super-awesomely tasty pieces of chocolate. They're all super-awesomely tasty. ;)

01. Cutie and the Boxer [2013] - 8.5/10

I'm a sucker for a good doc about art and artists, and this is that. The relationship between husband and wife, and the conflict and competition found within, drives the film and turns it into something special.

4. Absence (2013) ★★½
Found-footage horror that follows a guy, his sister and her husband on their retreat to a woodlands cabin following the overnight disappearance of her seven-month pregnancy some time ago. Of course, anyone who's ever seen a horror movie can guess how her baby disappeared and why going into the woods for a vacation is probably the worst thing they could have done. Despite its predictability, however, the film is tonally superior and consistently creepy, and it's characters even exhibit some sense of growth throughout, even if it's all been seen before in various other (and in some cases better) movies. I'd rather see a thousand found footage horrors with this one's general themes being made over the endless repeats of Paranormal Activity that litter the genre.

1. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011, Brad Bird) 6.5/10

Solid and fast moving spy action that is written a bit too predicatbly and too safe for my taste. Does have some great action set pieces.

3. Paranoia-2013: 5/10

This sucks.

The plot sucks, most of the acting sucks, the score is fucking annoying (Does it seem like every other movie now uses some kind of stupid Techno-ish score?) and I hate smart phones and all of that crap even more just because of this stupid movie.

And I'm only giving it a 5 because I like Amber Heard who is essentially the lone bright spot in this movie and I just felt bad for how bored Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford looked throughout the film.

Seriously, how the fuck do you waste Gary Oldman?

2. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)(Coen Brothers)

Loved the soundtrack, most of the songs got stuck on my head. It's also a very good story, very well placed in the 60's and with solid characters.

I watched a film from the 2010s tonight, so I guess I'll join this challenge just in case I watch even more.

1. Berberian Sound Studio (2012, Peter Strickland)

Visually and auditory this is an awesome film if you're even just a bit of a giallo lover, but I'm not sure if the story is very good or quite mediocre. Anyhow, really fun to watch. Recommended.

1. Demi-soeur (2013) 7/10 Josiane Balasko - Q&A with director - I like this new work by the director. Her movies are always entertaining, and this was funny and sweet.
2. Elle s'en va/On My Way (2013) 6/10 Emmanuelle Bercot - Catherine Deneuve's performance was flawless. The story was a bit iffy just like Bercot's other films, yet somewhat intriguing still.
