Focusing on the German challenge but I'm definitely in. I have quite a few planned already (no time to list them now cause I got work) but I will say what I wanna do this week: Rewatch Johnny Guitar! Maybe rewatch Rio Bravo as well?

I haven't really been in a mood for films, maybe watching some Westerns (including revisiting those I've liked) could be a cure. I did watch a bunch some weeks ago and enjoyed that, and I remember really enjoying the last Western challenge I participated a couple of years ago. Especially want to watch some spaghetti Westerns, have seen only 8/50 from the ICM list.

You got some good Spaghettis ahead, I don't have much hope for the remaining 12 I got, besides mild entertainment.

What would you recommend? I noticed all of the films I've seen are directed either by Leone or Corbucci. I've been meaning to check out some of Fulci's Westerns. A Bullet for the General, Keoma and Day of Anger are also on my watchlist.

Here's what I've seen

All three of those are pretty awesome, although I know a few people who find Keoma crappy. It has camp value, but I really like it.

Well, having listened to the Keoma soundtrack, I can believe that some might find it bit off-putting (though I really liked what I heard myself).

Anyway, as you're the official Western connoisseur here, you've probably read about the subject. Would you have some book to recommend about the subject, think reading about the subject alongside could enhance the challenge experience.

 Sorry, I missed that

Anyway the Sergio Solima trilogy is a must, The Big Gundown; Run, Man, Run & Faccia a Faccia.

Death Rides a Horse is a really good one, Bullet for the General is great, Day of Anger & The Return of Ringo. Grand Duel is also worth a watch.

Some people swear by Django Kill, but I think it's a mess. Also I would only watch Duck, You Sucker if you are a Leone completist, it's a big let down.

Fulci's 4 of the Apocalypse isn't bad, but he's definitely not at home with westerns.

The only book I read was in French, and it was really good, but no translation. Apparently Alex Cox' book on spaghetti westerns is really good.

Cool, I'll take a look at those.

Cox's book (10,000 Ways to Die) seems to be available for free download on his site, which is is also cool.

I'll probably join you when I've finished watching Smallville.

I still need a bunch of westerns for the film genre challenge. Any recommendations for the following western subgenres?

Westerns
Biographies
Cattle Drive
Cavalry
Epic Westerns
Euro-Westerns
Frontier
Gunfighters
Hybrid Westerns (with horror, noir, road movie, martial arts, etc.)
Indian War or Indian Westerns
Issue Western
Modern Western
Musical Western
Outlaws
Road-Trail Journeys
Shoot-outs
Space Westerns
'Spaghetti' Westerns
Spoof Westerns

Westerns
Biographies (Fairly easy, a shit ton of westerns are based on real people (My Darling Clementine, The Left Handed Gun). but if you want an actual biopic, that's trickier, as they mostly suck (Wyatt Earp)

Cattle Drive (Red River, Cattle Empire, Cowboy)
Cavalry (She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, A Distant Trumpet, Sergent Rutledge, The Horse Soldiers)
Epic Westerns (The Covered Wagon, The Big Trail, The Big Country, How the West Was Won)
Euro-Westerns (Any good Spaghetti (top of the official lists is ripe with good picks) (If Italian is out, then Une corde, un colte, Shalako, or the Winnetou german series)
Frontier (If this is about the taming of the west, then (The Covered Wagon, The Big Trail, Westward the Women, The Iron Horse)
Gunfighters (The Gunfighter, El Dorado)
Hybrid Westerns (with horror, noir, road movie, martial arts, etc.)
(Noir: Bad Day at Black Rock,Winchester 73,Day of the Outlaw, The Gunfighter, Blood on the Moon, Johnny Guitar)
(Scifi: Valley of Gwangi, Westworld)
Indian War or Indian Westerns (Little Big Man, Broken Arrow, Devil's Doorway, Apache Drums, Ulzana's Raid)
Issue Western (The Ox-Bow Incident, Little Big Man, Dances with Wolves, Broken Arrow, Devil's Doorway)
Modern Western (The Lusty Men, The Misfits, No Country for Old Men, Electric Horseman)
Musical Western (Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, Paint Your Wagon, Calamity Jane)
Outlaws (Day of the Outlaw, Assassination of Jessie James, The Left Handed Gun, The Wild Bunch,
Road-Trail Journeys (The Big Trail, Wagon Master, Bend of the River)
Shoot-outs (My Darling Clementine, The Wild Bunch,
Space Westerns (Outland)
'Spaghetti' Westerns (Same as Euro Western)
Spoof Westerns (Blazing Saddles, Cat Ballou, Destry Rides Again, My Name Is Nobody, Trinity)

Since it's not May yet.

0. Canyon Passage (1946) - 8/10

Jacques Tourner being as awesome as usual. This helps with my planning too because I realized that there's another sub genre of westerns that I wanna see, western noirs.

Yea I had that list in mind. This is also what I had planned:

Johnny Guitar, Destry Rides Again, High Plains Drifter (rewatch or own on DVD)
Tall in the Saddle, Station West, maybe Raw Edge and Der Kaiser von Kalifornien
All on 500<400 and TSPDT
More Tourner
Explore Allan Dwan's, Richard Bartlett's, and maybe William S. Hart's films

Ohhhh, you have happy times ahead of you, my friend. I'm just grabbing stuff at random, some off lists, some not. I'm waiting for midnight so I can watch a cheesetastic western that's almost definitely horrendous -- I've had it sitting around for months. I like to kick some challenges off with bad/silly films, because then it only gets better! ;)

("Getting better" shouldn't be hard in this challenge; I have a few genuine goodies ahead, I expect.)
