WAR CHALLENGE

Posted Image

Goal:
Watch as many WAR movies as you can. If you are in doubt whether a movie counts or not, just ask. I will ask for opinions.

Rules:
- A feature film (anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- A total of 60 minutes of short films count as one entry.
- For mini-series or TV shows (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For mini-series or TV shows with shorter episodes (25 minutes or so), the 60 minutes rule applies.
- Rewatches are allowed.

Challenge runs from 1 September 2014 - 30 September 2014

Strange goal for a war challenge, no? ;)

Anyway, I won't really be competitive but I have a few war movies in the collection so might as well count me in.

I'm in but I don't know how hard I'll work at it. I may be a bit creative about interpreting the parameters (being a Quaker and all), but you can just disallow what doesn't fit, Cip.

wars and rumors of wars: revolutions, tribal wars, local brushfires, resistance movements, the 1968 Democratic convention, Star Wars, films made during wartime not directly portraying war but it's clearly in the background, aftermath of war, events leading up to war, context context context....

local brushfires,

Is that the War on the Environment (the only war that seems to be going well)?

01 - Band of Brothers, ep. 1 - 7,5/10

Not a bad introduction

02 - Band of Brothers, ep. 2 - 7,5/10

Richard Loncraine directed this one, that's a surprise.

1. The Longest Day (Annakin, et al, 1962) 7/10

Nice to see the focus on this single, incredibly important day in the war; a little too clean for my tastes (this was G rated believe it or not) however, and I didn't feel the fear of either the paratroopers or the marines advancing on the beach head. See Private Ryan and/or Band of Brothers for what I'm referring to. I realize it's a different period post-war etc. so maybe those aren't fair criticisms, and it is certainly fascinating from a historical perspective (the considerations regarding weather and the question of postponement for example). John Wayne comes off as, frankly, an overblown douche.

1. This Spanish Earth (1937) - Documentary by Joris Ivens depicting a smapp ;iece of the Spanish Civil War by Joris from the Republican side; commentary track by Ernest Hemingway. (showing nothing of the infighting that defeated the Republicans -- for that, see Loach's Land and Freedom.)

2. Red sorghum / Hong gao liang (China 1987)
The last third of the film is set during the Japanese invasion of China during WW II.

2. Richard III (Loncraine, 1995) 7.5/10

I guess I'm just not a huge fan of the time-period adjustment (and I'm not a stalwart on this issue by any means, for example I didn't mind the recent Rigoletto in Vegas); I really enjoy the history plays for their...well...history (I do realize they are a good percentage fictionalized as well). Also, as much as I love Downey Jr in the right roles, it just didn't work here (though his death is pretty cool). Benning goes in and out of her accent, but when she is on she is really good towards the end.

3. Hotel Imperial (1927, Stiller) - WW I
Spy story / romance sent in Austria in 1915. (Austrian-Hungarians are the good guys, Czarist Russians are the bad guys, Pola Negri is the heroine.

4. The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On / Yuki Yukite shingun (Jap 87) - WW II
I'm going to have to sleep on this one.

My list for this challenge has 3-4 months' worth of movies. I think I'll get in many different wars as I can (and/or different perspectives on any given war).

What's a war movie? I've seen Peking Opera Blues, Pathfinder, Red Sorghum and Ben-Hur. All have some element of war in it, but I'm not sure if they count.

Globetrotter, I raised the same question and the host responded as above.
I counted Red Sorghum. I'm quite sure the topic isn't restricted to actioners.

6-9. Hitler, ein Film aus Deutschland (W Ger 1977)
A 7-hour film in 4 parts. An intense four evenings (not quite successive). Words don't come easily and it was a bit much to take in. Each evening I sought comic relief afterwards, except for tonight, when I listened to Haydn's Emperor Quartet in the darkness.

Throughout the whole thing I found myself grieving for my own country.

3. The Big Red One (Fuller, 1980) 9/10

I loved the ensemble cast, and Lee Marvin in particular; I suppose your mileage will vary depending upon whether you like these guys or not. Expansive, albeit fleetingly, in it's coverage of several theaters (and apparently based on a true story).

Red Sorghum is set during a war so ok The film takes place in a rural village in China's eastern province of Shandong during the Second Sino-Japanese War. (Wikipedia) Peking Opera Blues The movie is set in chaotic 1920's China, when warlords fought each other for power (IMDB) so seems ok, if anyone disagrees let me know

10. Coriolanus (UK 2011) [Rome against the Volscians, 5th cent BC]
Modern-dress adaptation of latish Shakespeare play, with director Ralph Fiennes in the title role. I liked that he head of the Voscians has a Scots/Irish accent. I found the film gripping and very clear - subtitles helped. Viewers' comments seem mixed, but Ryebass, if you're ambivalent about Shakespeare in modern dress, you might give this a try. 4. The Way to the Stars 1945

This film with John Mills and others is a really good film about the RAF in World War 2 and then they are joined by the American pilots in WW2, some good lines, and stories and a real authentic feel, made as it was so close to the time it was covering. Certainly it is worth a watch and deserves more checks so added it to my 500:400 list, the film also known as Johnnie in the Clouds.

4. Good Morning Vietnam (Levinson, 1987) 7.5/10

This was one of those films I wanted to like more than I actually did; the movie does indeed have a great deal of charm and left me feeling good, just not bowled over the way some war films of this era do (it also is covering the early war circa 1965 where the horror of it all certainly hadn't been fully realized yet, so this likely plays a role). Understated is a good descriptor for this work; Robin Williams is himself were he a radio DJ in Vietnam essentially.
