Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

The winner of the match is the film that beats the other 2 films head-to-head. If A "beats" B, it means that A is ranked higher than B more often than B is ranked higher than A. If there's no winner using this method, it'll be decided by average rank.

Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works

Fellas, I didn't follow all the world-cup discussions (I missed the beginning of it and then it was somehow 10 pages of discussions which I didn''t want to follow...), so, can anyone participate nad vote as long as I have watched all three films till the deadline?

If so, I think I'll do that, espcially since all three films look intersting (also, are there wetransfers for the films, as I'm stingy with my KG ratio...).

Liked them all, but have to give Viaje the edge. Tabu was one of the more interesting films over the last few years. Apichatpong would have done better for Thailand for me (huge fan).

Thanks for your promotional labour, monty. I hope it helps to prevent Spain from repeating a very recent story, that is, being the first in saying goodbye to the World Cup.

- The winner of each match advances to the next round and get replaced with a different film from the same country.
Is it just me or is that sentence ugly?

Is this better:
Spoiler: click to toggle

btw 20 days to watch 3, or less movies? Is this going to take the whole year?

I think 20 days is pretty good. It might take a long time to complete, but it's a bigger chance more people will participate in each round - especially with other things we have going on on the forum - challenges, lists, film of the week etc - and whatever people have on their personal watchlists. It would've seemed like ages to me a few years ago, but with work and other personal things going on, I like that we have more time to get through it now.

Also, I'm feeling sad for Thailand, can someone be nice to it? :P

A new group gets opened every 14 days (they are open a bit longer than 14 days though).
But yes, it'll take nearly a year.

@Armoreska: That was a typo. It should be gets, not get.

The matches will overlap by 1 week, so round 1 will take 33 weeks.

Your sentence was in the perspective of movies. Arm suggests it'd be better if it is inthe perspective of countries.

I changed it to "The winning country from each match advances, and will be represented by a different film in the next round." Does that sound good?

Frankly I'm a huge fan of Spanish Soccer Team and Tika-Taka.
Well at least there are changes and they inject new blood to the team.
And speaking worst when would you see China, HK or Taiwan in it if it is not a Film World Cup?

Oh that just reminds me Strange Voyage is actually Xavi or Casillas. tehe
And Portugal is not an one-man team now in terms of film. On the other hand Thailand :whistling:

I watched all 3 a long time ago so re-watch is a must.

Just wonder if we can discuss or share our feeling on the film here (spoiler tag alert?)
Otherwise it'll be boring if there are only ratings.

These countries will eventually, though in the distant future, replace many European ones once they improve their footballing approach and achieve greater GDP growth as they already have what's the most basic for success - large populations.
On the other hand, if FIFA doesn't extend the number of participants from 32 to 48, future World Cups may not see much beyond Big 5 + Netherlands from Europe.

I thought Chinese Soccer Team only knew Kung Fu. :o
At least it is what most Chinese thinks. :whistling:

Well, this is out of topic.

I remember I heard a B-movie director called Jess Franco (whose commonly used actress is called Lina Romay) before.
Can they be the same person? :whistling:

Had already seen El extraño viaje and Tabu (that one in cinema) a while back and just watched Last Life in the Universe. I'll wait a bit before submitting my vote although El extraño viaje will be #3 (liked it but couldn't really connect).

Initially I wasn't so sure what to think about Tabu but I came to appreciate it. It's stuck in my mind. The present segment dragged a bit (which of course was needed for the juxtaposition with the glorious (nostalgically remembered) past. And the past segment  It might be responsible for my interest in colonial settings.

Last Life of the Universe certainly needs some discussing

That would be the awesome Tadanobu Asano. I'll try to watch Spain and Portugal's noms and submit a vote till the deadline. Last Life was a mood piece, and I enjoyed it when I saw it early in the year. Gorgeous cinematography, which is to be expected from Doyle.

I've seen all three of these already, but it's a really tough choice because I like them all - in fact I see I've given all three 8/10 on IMDB. but I'm gonna give the edge to Tabu (perhaps it has an advantage 'cause I saw it at the cinema). Last Life in the Universe is the sort of film I don't always go for (it falls somewhere in the Wong Kar-wai, Takeshi Kitano, Tsai Ming-liang realm), but for whatever reason this one worked for me. So Strange Voyage ends as the unlucky 3rd, but this should in no way imply dislike :pinch:

1. Tabu
2. Last Life in the Universe
3. Strange Voyage

Ana Moreira, the lead actress in the "old" part of Tabu, is a sort of underground film star here since the 90s, a decadent next-door sweetheart of sorts.

Here's some Ana Moreira for you

Next up: Carloto Cotta.
