I really have to recommend the Korean Film Archive's Youtube channel! They have uploaded something like 100 full length movies and more than 65 of them are official checks.

I'll try to watch a few Korean horror films for this and the Horror challenge. Probably won't be many, though.

I need to explore Korean cinema. Surely there are great arthouse (or even experimental) films apart from the better known directors?

Films from 500<400 (please add them to the first post):

184. Dharmaga tongjoguro kan kkadalgun 1989 a.k.a. Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?: A Zen Fable
259. Bakha satang 1999 a.k.a. Peppermint Candy
423. Goyangileul butaghae 2001 a.k.a. Take Care of My Cat
500. Da-reun na-ra-e-seo 2012 a.k.a. In Another Country

(did I miss something?)

I'm in.

@Melvelet: You missed Siworae. There are also 3 more from #501-1000 (Book chon bang hyang, Ggotip, Flandersui gae) so you can add those as well.

1. The Berlin File (Seung-wan Ryoo, 2013) - 6/10

Slick espionage thriller. Entertaining but nothing special. It took a bit to figure out who was who since we have CIA, Mossad, North/South Koreans, and German intelligence.

2. Seashore Village (Soo-yong Kim, 1965) - 6/10

Small village love story on the ocean. They mentioned mainland so maybe an island. The youngest and prettiest amongst a group of widows falls for an outsider. Straight romance with some funny chatter amongst the ladies. Nice B/W shots.

14 to go for bronze on KOFA list <-- Goal

and some box office

I'm taking a break from official challenges this month, but highly recommend Poetry (Shi, 2010) and Mother (Madeo, 2009). The former is streaming on Netflix in the US.

1. Gilsodom (aka. Gilsoddeum, aka. Gilsotteum) (Kwon-taek Im, 1986). Interesting premise, with a mostly subdued tone tells a story in lots of flashbacks (and flashbacks within flashbacks) of families torn apart by the chaos of the Korean War (and we're not even getting into the whole "ended up on the wrong side of the border" thing), focusing on one woman's attempt at locating the son she was forced to abandon as an infant. It doesn't quite work for me because the flashbacks are filmed exactly like the present, so it's sometimes hard to tell "when" you are - especially since the same characters are played by different actors depending on their age. It also gets sappy near the end, but that's only to be expected from Korean movies. Not bad, not great.

3. The Mother (Joon-ho Bong, 2009) - 8/10

I had just finished this the other day when I first say 3eyes post. At first I found the kid annoying thinking this was going to be a real corny movie but when mommy takes over the show starts. I hope she won some acting awards for this.

4. The Front Line (Hun Jang, 2011) - 8/10

A strategic hill changes hands several times during the final weeks of the war. Somehow letters from the North are getting passed to the South so an intelligence officer joins the fight to investigate treason.

5. The Way Home (Jeong-hyang Lee, 2002) - 9/10

A young city boy is sent to a small village to live with his mute Grandma in her remote hut for a few weeks. After his gameboy batteries run out and when he accepts there is no pizza or KFC available - then he begins to appreciate her hard life. Gut-wrenchingly good.

I've seen a North Korean movie (not on the list, alas!): "O Youth!" (Chongchuniyo!) from 1995. It was apparently a romantic comedy, but it wasn't especially romantic and the comedy was... let's just say, I didn't detect it. The rest of it was terrible, firmly in "so bad it's good" territory.

3. Hurrah! for Freedom (In-kyu Ch'oe, 1946). Not onl ar fram s missing in almo t ev ry sce e, but ntire scenes are mis ing. 4.Seopyeonje (Kwon-Taek Im, 1993). A tribute to the Korean folk singing known as Pansori, a sad, almost wailing, type of song. The female singer has a haunting voice that makes the movie worth watching if nothing else.

There are certainly some parallels between Mother and Poetry regarding the (grand)mothering aspect. The hush hush thing also made me think of Child's Pose which had some similar shadiness.

5. Declaration of Fools (Jang-Ho Lee, 1983). This is one weird movie. The story, such as it is, is a kind of "Jules et Jim". It's style, however, is more like that of filmed improvisational theater with a very experimental soundtrack. Most of the natural sounds and dialog is suppressed in favor of music, but it often fades in and out and there are stretches of complete silence with lots of action in the image. On top of that, there's a (terribly bad) child narrator that shows up from time to time. It's as if it was filmed by a early 60s Godard, complete with jump cuts and odd interludes. It's obviously supposed to be funny, but it's so weird that the term comedy seems inappropriate.

6. Pieta (Ki-duk Kim, 2012). Didn't hate it, definitely didn't love it either. A lot of the violence seems extremely gratuitous, just there for shock value. The redemption at the end, such as it is, is probably not enough to make up for that.

9. The Shower (1979)

Anyone who likes beautiful scenery should watch this. I'm glad I decided to watch the HD version.

It reminded me a little bit of A Summer at Grandpa's (similar setting, and both are about children, although this film has more romance in it).
