I'm in. I'll probably aim for about 10 or so.

Are all Soviet films allowed or only the Russian ones?

I guess thats a little up to the participant. I'll watch movies from the two official lists on ICM, and im pretty sure there are some soviet features on them.

I'm always watching Russian movies, so I'm in. I'm going to see two Soviet films in the theater tomorrow -- unfortunately, one day too early. :(

I've got about a dozen movies left before the Russian Guild Of Film Critics bronze (recently gained the LiveJournal one), might as well finish it off in December. I'm in.

01. Voenno-polevoy roman (1983) 5.5/10

Like a Russian remake of La maman et la putain, only shorter and with a more likeable guy.

It's still November, so the films I saw today don't count for this challenge, but they were interesting, so I'll just mention them here. These movies were included in Part Two of a retrospective of Georgian films at the Museum of Modern Art here in NYC (I saw some of the films in Part One a few months ago).

Today I saw:

--Work at Oil Derricks and Oil Extraction (Vasil Amashukeli, 1907) -- Footage of a vaaaast field of oil derricks in Azerbaijan.

--Journey of Akaki Tsereteli to Rachka and Lechkhumi (Vasil Amashukeli, 1912) -- Longer documentary footage of Georgian villages and rural people feting a national poet. Its slowness made it tedious, but the footage included was remarkable.

--Twenty-Six Commissars (Nikoloz Shengelaia, 1932) -- Propaganda lauding Bolshevik martyrs.

--Red Imps (Ivan Perestiani, 1923) -- An adventure tale set in the civil war! Starring a brother and sister team who look like The White Stripes and who team up with a black American, the trio romp about the country outsmarting their enemies in a vaguely Keatonesque manner. An unusual one.

As long as no one are opposed to it, I think rewatches should count, why shouldn't they?

01 - Vozvrashchenie, by Andrey Zvyagintsev (2003) 9,5/10

Here's an impressive masterpiece. I'll certainly rewatch it not too far from now...

1. Bratya Karamazovy (USSR 69)
Alyosha seemed kind of buffoonish. Of course the subplot in which he figures most was cut, but I also recall that during the Khrushchev years (half a decade before this), there was a big push to combat religion (at least I catalogued a lot of anti-religious books from 1963 or so). Dostoevsky may still have been officially considered decadent at that time, too.

2. Zhenitba Balzaminova (USSR 65)
This is apprently based on three different comedies by Aleksandr Ostrovsky, but I'm having a hard time matching the Russian titles (IMDb) with the English ones (Wikipedia). Set in a village in the 1840s or 50s, maybe.

I've only about 10 rewatches remaining and then it's waving goodbye to Russian cinema
1-4. Master i Margarita [2005] eps7-10 4-5/10
Probably not a good adaptation of the famous fantasy novel. Reviews are of mostly 1/10 and 10/10 variety, so I can never tell. Originally I gave it a 3/10 from TV watch. I like it better now, but it's still TV trash with crap FX. Also it's weird to see both plenty T&A and all these old famous Russian actors in 1 package.
Look at an actual character from the series

Armoreska, I remember enjoying that series, though it definitely wasn't a 10/10 for me. Probably closer to a 6.5-7. I haven't seen it since it originally came out though, so I'm not sure which memories are from the show and which are from the novel. =\

That's the best they could do for Behemoth? That looks worse than the cat on Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I would say yes, also Turkmen, Kazakh, Tajik, etc etc etc. Unless the intention is to restrict it to Russian-language films -- ?

Everyone has their own definition of what makes a film Russian. For some it's enough that the director is Russian, and some people think it HAS to be filmed in Russia, with a Russian director, Russian producers etc. I think it should be up to the participator what he or she considers Russian. Just my two cents :)

Nothing really special, but the story was interesting enough to keep me entertained, without going very deep. My ratings usually are pretty frisky, what I felt for this movie may be an 4 by other peoples standards :ermm:

So I did see the Ukrainian film Вавілон XX (1979) but not sure if that'll count, even if it was under the USSR when it was made.

1. Гвоздь в сапоге [Nail in the Boot] (1931) 7/10
Was this film supposed to be subversive or something? Such bizarre propaganda that it almost goes to the level of If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? in terms of being ridiculous. Still it was surprisingly suspenseful even with a plot that made me laugh, and the both directing and editing were mindblowing, but that's just the standard for Kalatozov.
