Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

The winner of the match is the film that beats the other 2 films head-to-head. If A "beats" B, it means that A is ranked higher than B more often than B is ranked higher than A. If there's no winner using this method, it'll be decided by average rank.

Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works

Watched The Terrorizers and Night Train before. I get the feeling Poland rules this time, but I need to see US's contender first(wow, with the <1000 checks rule US is much nerfed now).

btw, how many people here love/hate Michael Haneke?

Even with the <1000 rule, there are plenty of choices for the US. I don't know the stats for iCM, but on Mubi, the US has more films rated 4.1+ with 30-300 votes than either France or Japan. The US also has more films on the 500<400 list than either France or Japan.

yes, I love/hate Michael Haneke.
I wonder Haneke watched The Terrorizers :whistling:
You can find similar way of storytelling in several early Haneke works, and the cold atmosphere is pretty much the same.
One thing I don't like Yang is that his films are subjectively tragic (still far better than Lars von Trier). I prefer Hou and Wang Tung's works. At least they still show some warmful scenes even the films are tragedy overall. Still according to RYM Yang's works are more popular than Hou's (I heard that Yang tend to write his script in English and then translate it back into Chinese).

Terrorizers: After Yi yi I didn't expect my next Yang movie to be like this. Quite a different kind of movie.
I like that cold atmosphere :)
Yang is in desperate need of more decent DVD (or even BD) releases...

Yiyi is the one I consider masterpiece. I remember I burst in tears watching the ending in which the boy tells Grandma he gets old. Really emotional and brilliant ending.

I see some cinephilies(I mean cinephilies because Yang is Chinese critics' darling) complain Yang being too much like a scholar. Yang used his films as a medium to criticize the society, but some complain that Yang saw life too tragic and the world in Yang's camera is a bit away from real life. I watch four of Yang so far. Yiyi is the one I can sense the taste of real life (but I may need to rewatch his most acclaimed work A Brighter Summer Day).

As for The Terrorizers, it is brilliant in creating the cold atmosphere, but I don't think I like the story.

Already watched Terrorizers and Pociag. I liked Terrorizers more than Yi Yi. I felt the story is bit weak but everything else is perfect and Ending was great. Pociag was just average for me . Did not find anything great. But not a bad movie at all.

Terrorizers - 7.6
Pociag - 6.2

Pociag 8,5
Kong bu fen zi 8
The Whole Shootin' Match 6,5

My third favorite Yang (seen them all in a retrospective a few years back). the strongest point of the movie is the plot/story. A little tighter than the other Yang movies

That Day, on the Beach (1983) 8.5
Yi yi: A One and a Two (2000) 8.5
The Terroriser (1986) 8.0
A Confucian Confusion (1994) 8.0
Taipei Story (1985) 8.0
A Brighter Summer Day (1991) 7.0
In Our Time (1982) 7.0
Mahjong (1996) 6.0

But Night Train is still something that I like better. Very early new wave, also a good story (this will play well with a universal audience, not just the art-house crowd I think) and excellent camerawork are the strong points

I was very excited about the US indie one. Had not heard about it before but was apparently very influential for the indie scene. I can see where that influence might lie. The laidback style is nice and there are a few purdy pictures in there, all shot on a clearly low budget. But the characters and story were just not interesting to me, not in a dramatic way and certainly not in the way of comedy... I found them more irritating than funny actually. Also I had to watch this with subtitles on. Not because of the thick accents, but because of the very poor audio quality (voices often drowned out by music, or seemingly not recorded at all). The acting itself was also subpar... all in all a bit of a dissapointment...

A link to an old CuM SWAP thread of 'The Terrorizers' that went down on IMDb between myself and timmy whom you know as well:

http://www.pedeamb.t15.org/Terrorizers_2012_CuM_SWAP.htm

Incidentally I'll CuM SWAP it again in a few days, maybe I'll keep you up to date if the discussion is/was worthwhile, or maybe I won't.

For what it's worth I liked 'Night Train' a great deal as well, but 'The Terrorizers' is some next level shit, pardon my French.

The US one is an interesting one to look at, but mainly because of its anti-conventional style, but it also gives me a feeling of raw and amateurish.

4 is a small sample size, but theoretically Night Train is the most popular one on this forum.
I wonder how many here have watched the US one before. To me it is a rare choice (not meaning it is bad) even compared with The Terroizers.

Indeed!

I recognize a strong resemblance among the popular films on this forum: Cybele, The Ascent, Letter Never Sent, Human Condition and Night Train all have a similar tone, similar characters, similar pacing.

Same ranking for me...

1. Pociąg 8/10
2. The Terrorizers 7/10
3. The Whole Shootin' Match 6/10

I thought The Terrorizers had the best acting. It's the kind of movie where the slow pacing doesn't bother me a single moment. Even in static shot where nothing seemed to be happening, the actors managed to grab my attention for every second. But I liked Pociag better for its story, cinematography and the atmosphere that was created by the music.

Indeed, Pociag is the more all-round one.

I just wonder if this will be another one-sided match like the one with Ascent and Muddy River.

Both Pociag and Terrorizers are nice looking films with not much aura that would make me love them. That is the hole which a little independent American film could have filled with its sensibility.
Unfortunately I do not care about Texan yokels trying to get rich... It is neither Clerks, nor Buffalo 66, nor Cavehi, nor it does have Buscemi in it. Not even Cassavetes (in his better days, though).

A very strong round - I'd already seen Night Train and The Terrorizers and favourited both. The Whole Shootin' Match had a tough job to match them and, while I liked it for its down-to-earth style and a nice soundtrack, it didn't quite get into favourite territory. Night Train edges Terrorizers by a whisker.

Pociag - Film-noirish character study with a bit of a surreal ending.
Kong bu fen zi - Very bleak and depressing. Thought the beginning was a bit confusing, but the ending brings it all together quite nicely.
The Whole Shootin' Match - I liked the soundtrack, but didn't really connect with the movie.

2. Kong bu fen zi 7/10
