Eh, why not. I'm 7 short of completing the Best Picture winners (not counting the current crop).

[Edit: waiddaminute, I just checked, I'm only 5 away from completing the bunch. So 5 it is.]

0. "The Woody Woodpecker Song" from Wet Blanket Policy (1948) 6/10 I cannot count this one since it is a short, but it was nominated for Best Song. I watched a lot of Woody Woodpecker cartoons growing up and I never remember this song. I much prefer the cartoony song opening.

1. "The Sweetheart Tree" from The Great Race (1965) 8/10 Won for Sound Effects, nominated for Cinematography (Color), Sound and Film Editing. Good song that at first only plays during the entrance and intermission, but then gets sung "Natalie Wood" with a bouncing ball over the lyrics. This inspired the cartoon Wacky Races, which can be seen since Jack Lemmon's character is basically Dick Dastardley. A funny movie that you cannot take seriously is a little too long spending time in Europe and discussing women's equality.

I'm in, especially since it's not just the current crop of nominations (though I might end up watching a lot of those too).

1. Birdman (2014) dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu 6-7/10
BP Nominee, among others

err... spoilers inside

1. Underworld (1927, Josef von Sternberg) 7.5/10
1 Win: Best Writing, Original Story 1929

Film about a charismatic gangster boss, and the troubled morailty of his girl and a guy who he put back on his feet who fall in love but still feel loyal to the boss. Strong silent, with good technique and fast pace. Feels like a blueprint for a lot of the gangster films of the early 30s.

And the Oscars seen so far...

2. Birdman (2014, Alejandro González Iñárritu) 8/10
9 noms 2015: Best Picture, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Best Direction, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing

Tight meta film about an actor merging his life, his defining role as a super-hero and his current stage role in his head, leading to some unusual periods. Great acting by Keaton and who knew Iñárritu was capable of directing such an engaging film with such a heady premise. Also, Lubezki is one badass cinematographer, some amazing shots going on here.

And the Oscars seen so far...

2. "The Slipper and the Rose Waltz (He Danced with Me/She Danced with Me") from The Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella (1976) 6/10 Nominated for Original Song Score and Its Adaptation or Adaptation Score. This was definitely the best song from this musical. The story of Cinderella is boring if you have seen enough versions of it, but this does take any interesting track of the politics behind the two getting married. Weird coincidence both this and the the last movie I saw, The Great Race had scenes take place at the same castle, Anif Palace in Salzburg, Austria.

2. Random Harvest (1942) 7.5/10

Enjoyed this a lot and surprised it didn't win any of it's 7 nominations. Up against some good films for that year so I can understand why. Greer Garson won Best Actress for Mrs Miniver so that's why she wasn't up for nomination in this film I guess!

Aiming FTW, but I usually end up 2nd. Continuing with rarest available docus, returning to clean up 2006's (the year I discovered the internets), some 2014 and perhaps then 2005

1. Liberators: Fighting on Two Fronts in World War II 2/10
It sucks, and besides it's apparently untrue
2. Notes On A Scandal 7.5/10
Oscar nominees were better 8 years ago. good story adapted from a book (with a different, lesser ending though) and performances from Dench and Blanchett
3. The Ten-Year Lunch: The Wit and Legend of the Algonquin Round Table
bonus: Aya 5/10 [uneventful 40min. also it's 2 years older than year 2014], nothing yet to fill up the remaining 20mins

3. "Glory" from Selma (2014) 7/10 Nominated for Best Picture. I had a choice of seeing one of four Best Picture nominees in the theaters and went with Selma to continue my Song theme. I liked the chorus, but not the rap verse of the song. The movie, while very emotional at times, also felt very sterile since it was based on a true story.

Wins:
- Best Picture - Stanley R. Jaffe
- Best Actor in a Leading Role - Dustin Hoffman
- Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Meryl Streep
- Best Director - Robert Benton
- Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium - Robert Benton

That was a swell ending, I didn't see it coming. And it's always nice when you recognize a scene from a reference in Family Guy. :D

1. Jesus Camp (2006) Exposé of fundamentalist Christians. Some horrifying footage of children being brainwashed but it's essentially a hatchet job doesn't go into any depth, and it's tied into the Bush administration so it seems less relevant now. 6/10

4. "Pass That Peace Pipe" (1947) 7/10 An okay song that was one of three big production numbers in this musical. The film is a 1940s musical about 1920s college that was pretty good with a little bit of football, maybe five minutes about academics and the rest of the time it is about collegiates falling in and out of love.
