Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

The winner of the match is the film that beats the other 2 films head-to-head. If A "beats" B, it means that A is ranked higher than B more often than B is ranked higher than A. If there's no winner using this method, it'll be decided by average rank.

Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works

So far we have got Europe(many) and at least one Asian and one South American. I think this is the only group that Africa has the highest chance to win.

I watched La Noire De before yet without subs. Need to watch it again. Watched Museum Hour last week. Feeling good in the beginning but starts to get more bored and bored. Not yet watched Italian one, but I am afraid I am not a fan of the director. I hope this one is an exception.

Oh yeah, Mario mentions the new system for country matching-up depending on the average score of the contenders. I have one question. So the managers know which countries they are going to face in advance, and this also means that they know which film they are going to play against in advance. So will one manager change his chosen film when he sees the opponent picks a stronger film? Or should the managers send the chosen films to a particular person by message and the line-up will only be shown by that person in the last minute?

I'm not sure if we should decide the matches in advance. Why don't we make a pot of the six highest scores and a pot of the six lowest scores. Then select the movies. When that's done, draw matches by drawing a country from each pot for each match.

why not just pick the films and then have completely random draw? I don't really see need for seeding - it would be fun if a couple of the big hitters had to face off in the second round..

anyhow, I missed a couple of rounds but I'll partake in this one once I've seen Amici miei.

Amici Miei is an example why I will never actively try to work on the icm Most Favorite list. Not a bad film per se, but I found it to be a bore.

I'm very polarizing about Italian comedies myself. I found it to be extremely unfunny despite warm beginning, when I expected to be a sincere film about friendship. Boy I was wrong.
In Serbia, Benigni's "Il mostro" was like 1,000,000 times on TV and people loved it. His later films were not so good, though.

La noire de... is great but Mario you should have went with Camp de Thiaroye. This forum is head over heels for that film.

Haven't seen Amici miei, but I can't see it beating Museum Hours considering how amazing it is, plus Italian tits do nothing for me.

I hope Austria wins, quite a few great choices for that country like Film ist a Girl & a Gun (having a film that features pornography in this competition would be funny), Unsichtbare Gegner (golden showers and pube staches!) and Maskerade (the sickest film here, a cute 30s romcom)

La noire de is a canonical choice, but I agree that Camp de Thiaroye is a better one. So far Camp de Thiaroye and Moolade are the best of the director imo.

Maybe he could pick it for round 2. It has a different director (Thierno Faty Sow). :whistling:

Re-watch La Noire De with Eng sub. Still find it medicore. A very typical third world film. Heavily relying on the black girl's narratives instead of storytelling to express the message. Difficult to decide between it and Museum Hours though.

btw, Mario, which non-Mambety/Sembene films from Senegal will you recommend? Because so far what I watch are all from these two directors.

So far I've only seen films of them two. I thought "Étalon de Yenenga" would be a good choice for the R2, provided that someone makes subtitles for that film. However Senegal hasn't qualified yet, so we'll wait and see.

2. La noire de...
3. Amici miei

Can't say any of these are favourites. Amici miei I didn't click with the comedy which made it a rather trying experience. La noire de I watched a while back, remember it being a bit too simplistic. Museum Hours was the best for me. though it never fully hooked me, it was a nice mood piece

As expected, Mario disappoints me as usual. I haven't liked any Monicelli so far.
So obviously the Serbian Mario beats the Italian Mario. The only resistance comes from Austria, but I give the edge to Senegal.

Seems that Italy is going to be worst-performing country in the R1. Even worse than Finland. Not that it is undeserved.

Too early to tell. Almost everyone (even Dolwphin himself) believed The Way South was going to end up the last, but now it beats The Official Story in the second place.

Although in this case we have a strange problem. The manager himself didn't watched the film before he picked it and now he mentiones that he dislikes the film. Even as a long time non-lover of Mario Monicelli, I actually expect the film to perform well as it is popular on RYM, but looks like this is not the case (Alright, Monicelli has several films in RYM 1000 and I find every one of them I watched boring and not funny).

btw, I hope we can make a complete list of Film World Cup after the whole cup is over, and I hope it can become an official list. I know we have many personal choices so far, but at least many of them gain their own circle of supporters here.

Nope. It's still 12-9 in favor of Historia. The Way South is third at the moment.

Baffles me that a manager can pick a movie he (at that point) hadn't seen. What's the point? Surely jeff_v must've seen Italian films he can actually root for.

Museum Hours was great and I've seen the excellent Senegalese pick before... really dreading this 2 hour Italian comedy. I guess I don't HAVE to see this but as a completionist I guess I.. have to.

It's not as bad as Armo's rating suggests. But it is a bit pointless. Watch it as some simple fun, without expecting too much and it won't be that bad.

Just watched it. I liked it actually. Thought it was pretty funny at times in an anarchic way and the finale is brilliant. If it were in a different group it would've stood a chance to go through in my opinion.

Ratings:
1. La noire de... 8/10
2. Museum Hours 8/10
3. Amici miei 7/10

I'm an increasingly interested spectator of the World Cup and doing a list of this is fine, but there's really no point in making it official. Who outside of the Forum should care?
A gazillion other lists have priority.

I'm one of the guys who has participated in every round of the WC so far and unfortuantely I still have to agree with Torgo.
I mean the game is good fun and it points me to films I likely wouldn't have seen soon otherwise, but the films still have no overall quality or thematic standard that should be required for an official list.
If we push for a second official list on the forum (after our magnificent 500<400) it should be either that we all champion mighty's horror list (I'm ALL for that) or we try to champion our annual favorite movie poll (which isn't any worse or better than the current official reddit, film totaal or FOK list, so if those are offical ours might as well, or neither should they).

That wasn't the intent... I thought fav/check ratio would be a good indicator of ICM board support.

If I had to do it over again, I would've picked Io la conoscevo bene / I Knew Her Well (Antonio Pietrangeli, 1965)
