I'm in. I'll try to watch at least 2 so I can reach 25/130 on the Polish list, which is one of my goals for 2015 (but I might watch more than that).

So basically if you don't live in Poland and don't like sports, you're not Polish. Kurwa mac.

Anyways, I'll probably see a few for this challenge.

15 out of 76. I'm not Polish even though Poland's on my list to visit at some point.

Also, only have seen 30/130 films on the official Polish films list.

23/76. And I'm Polish. Well, Polish-American, but hey, I know the curse words and the disgusting foods in addition to the great ones and the proper day to open Christmas presents. That should be enough.

Ha!

I got 21/76. A lot of those supposedly Polish things are common in Scandinavia as well (big dinner and opening presents on Christmas Eve, painting eggs on Easter, e.g.).

1. Sami swoi - 6/10 A story about two feuding families. I don't think the humor translated well at all. It reminded me of this film on the Iranian list (whose name escapes me at the moment) where these people were feuding over property and then I looked at the genre at IMDB and was floored that it was supposed to be a comedy. It was ok to me, but the IMDB rating was much higher than usual, so that was really weird.

Also I'm coming up with a list of female Polish directors in case people want to participate in both official challenges this month. On the main page of the Films Directed by Women Challenge, I have a list of 4 Polish women so far.

2. Zimowy zmierzch/Winter Twilight 6/10 Nice but repetitive cinematography (I appreciate women's reflections in the mirror, but this was too much). Anyway, nice lead actress, but I felt something was missing.

3. Wojna swiatów - nastepne stulecie/War of the Worlds - Next Century (1981) 6/10 Was ok. It preceded Videodrome strangely enough. At some times, I thought it was derivative of the film.

2. Wszystko, co kocham (2009) 6/10
The story of four teenagers playing in a punk band in 80's Poland. I feel like it wanted to approach too many subjects at once and didn't took enough time to fully exploited them.

5. Rysopis 6/10 Weird ok story, sometimes it's fun.
6. Wesele 6/10 I kept thinking of "Rachel at the Wedding" even though culturally it was different.
7. Zywot Mateusza/The Days of Matthew 6/10 Some things about it reminded me of an Ingmar Bergman movie (Summers with Monika & Persona when he's at the beach) and then sometimes it felt like Polanski's Knife in the Water (not thematically, just atmospherically). Anyway, I wasn't drawn in by it, but it was ok.
8. Krzyk/Scream (Barbara Sass) 6.5/10 This film was interesting at least. Some good performances too.

BTW Barbara Sass is another name to add to the list of female Polish directors.

50/76, I am (half) Polish, but I cheated (so 50/76 is overrated), because I also checked things that hyperbolically described stuff I did in my childhood and my environment did.

So I don't count myself in the group of people to whom those questions are actually accurate descriptions of what they do/think about/argue about (and I used to know such people... so... frightening), since I'm as unpatriotic and non-religious as you can get.

I only have 19/130 for that Polish film list, but I have DVDs & links* to at least 20-30 more of those. This is probably the only list where I have chances of being in the top 10... in the future.

*Studio Filmowe Tor and Kadr have created Youtube channels where you can watch some of their films for free. There are no subtitles though, but that's not a problem for me.

10. Vabank (1981) 6/10 Decent revenge film.
11. Matka Królów/Mother of Kings 7/10 touching story
12. Trzecia czesc nocy/Third Part of the Night 6/10 I was really looking forward to this Zulaski film. It was interesting, but overall, it didn't do much for me.
13. Nadzór 7/10

Yeah. Also, some of it feels quite universal, at least for someone who grew up on the Polish border -- hence my score. Of course it's one thing to eat/have tried the food and completely another to score on the religion front, yet the points are the same; still had fun going through the quiz, though.

The Polish list bronze is in my longer term plans and I certainly hope I won't be needing subs by the time I get near that goal. :whistling:
