Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

The winner of the match is the film that beats the other 2 films head-to-head. If A "beats" B, it means that A is ranked higher than B more often than B is ranked higher than A. If there's no winner using this method, it'll be decided by average rank.

Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works

1) brand 9
2) childhood 7.5
3) tatlong 6.5

They are already in the right order :)
My favorite Maddin film is an easy winner. I am not as impressed with the Douglas trilogy as some, but still liked it enough. Three godless Years is a very peculiar movie that preaches something about human behaviour and religion that didn't sit well with me at all. it clearly represents a national spirit of a country that has been plagued by conquerors and dictatorship. An interesting watch, but not a movie that i can enjoy on a personal level. And again i thought the music was a particular weak part...

On a side note: is this again a metaphoric use of rape? I see it used a lot in modern Fillipino cinema form the likes of Raya Martin and Lav Diaz to such a degree that it almost becomes an offputting trademark...

Shouldn't it be 1L in the title?

Also noooo why was Guy Maddin chosen for Canada :(

1. My Childhood (1972) 7/10
2. Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos [Three Godless Years] (1976) 7/10
3. Brand Upon the Brain! A Remembrance in 12 Chapters (2006) 4/10

My Childhood is great, but I think that his trilogy doesn't even come close to his other film Comrades. Tatlong is rough around the edges, but I still found it to be quite engaging.

I always copy/paste from the previous match, but sometimes I forget to change the letter. :(

Guy Maddin is awesome and your 4/10 rating is incorrect.

Huh? I don't hate Maddin!
I just watched Brand and I kinda enjoyed it. I like his visual style, but I must say that it doesn't blow me away as much as it did the first time I saw a Maddin movie. Partly this is just a lot of sillyness, but partly it is a joy to watch and it keeps my attention till the end. 7/10

But I think I prefer My Childhood.

Now I need to watch Tatlong...

Let's try. Criticker has a Random Film button. I just hit it and it resulted in "Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple" (1955). Four of my kumpels rated it: Jeff_v and Tommy rated it 7/10. Themagician and Lonewolf rated it 8/10. And Monty probably liked it too.

Same ranking as Arthur this time (but lower rating).

1. My Childhood (1972) - 5.5/10
2. Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos [Three Godless Years] (1976) - 4/10
3. Brand Upon the Brain! A Remembrance in 12 Chapters (2006) - 4/10

My childhood - Bleak portrayal of childhood, but I didn't get gripped by it. Maybe the misery was just too much.
Three Godless Years - The movie is a bit of a mess and the music is horrible.
Brand Upon the Brain! - Too artsy for me. Feels like weirdness for weirdness sake.

My Childhood
Typical British film. Nothing particularly special.

Tatlong taong walang Diyos
Good story concerning human love, but that's nothing surprising from Mario O'Hara. The church scene towards the end is very impressive, first the nightmare feeling and then the conversation regarding God and love. Overall the miss-en-scene is very good with some nice editing, but the style is a bit incoherent. I can see why the raw war footage is inserted but it looks odd when these shots break into melodramatic moments. And a few times the acting are wooden.
btw, is the one playing Crispin being the one who plays as male lead in Brocka's Manila at the Claws of Light and Weighed But Found Wanting? Looks like a very important actor in Pinoy cinema (Philippine's Jean Pierre Leaud perhaps)

1. Tatlong taong walang Diyos
2. My Childhood
(by far........)

Bembol Roco starred in Manila, Christopher De Leon in Weighed But Found Wanting (and several other classics) and Nora Aunor is a big star (Himala). And Peque Gallaga became a top director. Not bad cast.

Brand Upon the Brain!
New favorite for me. Love the frenetic pace of the images, it's panicky and it feels like there's an itch to the mood of the movie that it desperately tries to scratch. Or perhaps more like a carousel that goes around scarily fast and you wonder if it's about to fly off its hinges. The angst and paranoia that's on the skin of the film reminded me a lot of The Life and Death of 9413, a Hollywood Extra and also another short film that Slavko Vorkapich co-created, Moods of the Sea. It references the last one several times very quickly, so many fun references to avant-garde films and silents throughout. That alone makes this highly enjoyable and funny, but it also provides a pretty disturbing and interesting allegory for parents' rule over their children, here shown as a nightmarish survellaince totalitarian regime. It makes Guy's parents out to be Nazi Germans. Characters that these "Nazis" lord over are figuratively always in the spotlight and the cone of light follows them never giving them a break ("Play where I can see you"). The relationship scenes between the two girls in the middle of this horror were refreshing. A movie I feel like I'm going to watch many times. My only gripe with this is the voiceover which I felt was unnecessary throughout.

My Childhood
Very good and brutal. Obviously very personal for the director and that shows. Expertly shot and staged but I sometimes was a little distracted with the framing and the third-person shots because they were so "tasty" to look at.

Tatlong taong walang Diyos
I'm not seeing the greatness here, to be frank I thought it was utter trash. Whenever it tries to do drama it really looks and feels like the worst kind of soap opera, the acting is godawful and it becomes laughable how much time the characters spend staring with dead faces into nothing in dialogue scenes. The lines the actors are given are banal and most times not realistic in the sense that people don't talk that way. Add to that a terrible repeating sappy score that makes the movie feel like it's never going to end. I also don't like the muddy morals of the movie, how it deals with rape and how weak the women are written. Well to be fair the whole movie is poorly written.

1. Brand Upon the Brain 9/10
2. My Childhood 8/10
3. Tatlong taong walang Diyos 3/10

Quite close for me between the first two (although the final decision wasn't super hard in the end). I now want to check out more Maddin in general (something I planned for years already..) and the rest of Douglas' trilogy.

1. Brand Upon the Brain 8/10
2. My Childhood 7.5/10
3. Tatlong taong walang Diyos 6.5/10

And as always my quick thoughts on them:

Brand Upon the Brain! A Remembrance in 12 Chapters (2006, Guy Maddin)
Fancy stuff that uses it's silent film aesthetic and 70s LSD-infuesed editing techniques to great effect in telling a tale of loneliness, lost love and child abuse in a very entertaining fashion. Quirky, weird and with a melancholy that seems honest but also hilarious at times.
8/10

My Childhood (1972, Bill Douglas)
Look at the bleak childhood of two boys living with their grandmother in very poor conditions towards the end of WWII in Scotland. Good look at how they try to enjoy the little that life offers them, and how fate crushes them as everything gets even worse. Touching, with very economic storytelling and great cinematography.
7.5/10

Tatlong taong walang Diyos / Three Godless Years (1976, Mario O'Hara)
Story about a young woman and her fate through WWII in the Philippines. The personal drama is well depicted, but sometimes it's a bit too melodramatic for me, and it's pacing could have been a bit more dynamic.
6.5/10

1. Brand Upon the Brain - Maddin is very love-hate & naturally I fall on the correct side of that divide.
2. Three Godless Years - I was going back and forth with this one. there are some aspects I like and others where I'm with the general too-melodramatic/soap-opera opinion on this thread. as a microcosm of my feelings to the whole film, I liked part of the soundtrack - the repeatedly used motifs from the main theme were often effective (though I could swear part of it was ripped from L'America by the Doors) - but some of the other music was painfully intrusive & obvious.
3. My Childhood - not really a fan of Bill Douglas' trilogy.

Ranking was easy in this group.

1. Brand Upon the Brain (2006): 9.5 - I was reluctant to watch this, cause I had mixed feelings at best about Maddin's shorts. But the rating says it all. I loved this. Bumped right into my top 100. I love the whole style of the movie. It pulled me in and never let go. Loved how it got weirder and weirder.
2. My Childhood (1972): 8.0 - Read a reviewer describe it as poetic realism. And that is exactly what it this is.
3. Tatlong taong walang Diyos (1976): 6.0 - Mixed feeling about this. The intro was great and so where those interludes of archive footage. The movie itself, although it is in theory a poignant story, I found it to be boring for some stretches. It does get better toward the end
Spoiler: click to toggle
. But overall it was just too long.
