iCM Forum's Favourite TV-series
Posted Image

So next to movies there are these things called TV-series (or shows, if you want to call them that) So let's take a little break from all these movies polls and see which oned are forum's favorites.

Deadline: 1 May 2015

  • TV-series (shows) and mini-series are allowed. This does also include mini-serie versions of some movies, for example: Fanny och Alexander
  • List can be any length and can be ranked or unranked. Partially ranked list, that still are submitted, will be considered as unranked.
  • Imdb-lists or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, maybe some other user can help you out.)

Scoring for ranked lists: Half-life = 20
Scoring for unranked lists:
Every film on your list receives the same number of points (the average of what they would have received if your list was ranked).

There is already one issue I would like to discuss:
Imdb has different pages for each Black Adder season (or series as the Brits call seasons). Do we consider those indeed all like separate series or do we consider them as one serie (in which case a vote for the first one will count as a vote for all)?

I'm voting for them separately since IMDb allows it (and coz I like them all to differing degrees, first one ain't even on my list).

My issue is with mini-series. Some of them I think as TV shows and others I think of as movies and others as... mini-series. Tough to rank alongside them.

I included mini-series, but I put ones that I think of as movies at the bottom (even though Langoliers is a 10/10 and it hurts me to put it at the bottom) and scattered the others throughout. I also included shows that are still currently airing or ones that had finished but I haven't finished watching and just chucked em at where I think they'd end up. I normally don't include those in my list but don't care whatever.

I made a list of my fav tv shows over the years. I don't really watch/like TV. But now that I see that mini-series are allowed, I might add some more.

The inconsistencies with seasons are pretty annoying. For example, Daar Vliegende Panters 2 has only one season, which is called "season 2", because it is actually the second season of Daar Vliegende Panters and there is nothing different about it. At least the four Black Adders are different characters in a different setting, so I think it's fair to vote for them separately.

In case any other Dutchies are voting for Daar Vliegende Panters, I'll vote for season 1 as if it is the whole.

My list:
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls076914244/

UNRANKED

Normally I rank my list, but in this case I find it too hard, because it is such a weird combination of things. It includes mini-series that I watched as if it was a movie next to childhood memories. Some series I have seen completely, other not even half (but enough to vote for it). Etc... I'll take a look at every list that will be posted to see if I'd like to add others.

Black adder is one tv-show for me. I’m not going to think about what season of a show I prefer over an other one, or it will take years to make a list. Beside that a thing only silly brits do ; two entries for “Yes, Minister” and “Yes, Prime minister”... seriously ?

In my opinion generally anything that is eligible for the usual film list should be excluded for this list. Firstly what's the point in making this list that is about narrative formats that are always ignored for movie lists just to also include some of the same things that are almost always also considered films and secondly it strikes me as utterly pointless to try to compare for example 'Das Boot' with 'The Simpsons'.

There are enough noteworthy "proper series" that deserve this one little moment in the spotlight that it's not necessary to spice it up or whatever with the same titles that also have a fair chance at making any other list.

What about something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Rammstein-Lichtspielhaus/dp/B00016MT6Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428709111&sr=8-1&keywords=Lichtspielhaus

It has an IMDb page and an ICM page. It's a collection of music videos. Those type of releases very often have an IMDb and an ICM page.

Other examples:
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/tool+salival/
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/god+is+in+the+t.v./
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/closure/

It's probably a bit of a stretch, but they are closer to being series than films so I'm just wondering.

I have to agree partly. Some mini-series feel like TV series to me (like Jekyll), but since I just included everything that was TV series or mini-series on IMDb I ended up with The Langoliers and The Shining - both of which I've always watched as films and wouldn't have known they were mini-series if not for IMDb. So I feel too strange ranking them alongside actual TV series. I think it would be better to exclude all mini-series but eh.

Also I just had a quick flick through everyone else's lists and for once I'm the one with the most entries! I had 108 or something and the next highest is 50 :/ Don't y'all watch TV shows?

Well, I included the "special releases" for now (e.g. music video compilations). In regard to what I said in my first post (screw mini-series and such) I made an exception in my list with anime and included them regardless of their number of episodes, people can never agree on if they are series or mini-series anyway. I also was less strict with documentaries once they had, like, 10 or more parts since with them there also often is a dispute over their mini-series status.

My list:
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls076930772/ (ranked)

@mjf314
I'm sure that the emphasis is on series rather than on TV and that straight-to-video series are totally fine. Especially with Japanese animation it's quite common to release them on "video" rather than on TV.

@Rich
As always with ICM list nominations there is no limit.

Here's my list: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls076935033/

It's mostly anime + Futurama + 2 live-action series.

I've only seen the first 4 seasons of Futurama (or 5, depending on how you count them), but that was the entire series for about 6 years, so I guess it's ok to include it.

I didn't include series where I've only seen some random episodes (like The Twilight Zone for example).

Edit: I forgot 2 live-action mini-series so I just added them.

I don't know if I should include TV specials, shorts and one offs. Some of which I have in my favourite movies and shorts like Wallace & Grommit and Kevin Turvey: The Man Behind the Green Door.

How are other people ranking anthology shows? Especially ones with wildly differing quality like Play for Today and The Wednesday Play.

I only included The Outer Limits (new one) and The Twilight Zone (old one) and I guess MST3K too, I ranked them according to how much I look forward to watching an episode sort of and the general range of 'goodness' (the majority of eps of all those shows I at least like and when they're great they're really great).

The reason I included mini-series is that personally I see little difference between them and regular tv-series. They both consist of a ammount of episodes lining up to make one story (or have some kind of connection). I see a mini-series as a tv-series consisting of just one season. And especially with the anthology series nowadays like American Horror Story, the line is even fading more. Some mini-series might feel more like a movie, cause most people watch it in one sitting. But nowadays when people binge watch an entire season, that discrepancy is also fading.
Besides it was too much of a hazzle to make an complete list of exceptions and allowed mini-series.

I see more difference with one shot tv-shows and specials. And are hesitating to allow those.

Some mini-series are also included in the normal favorite list. But so are shorts and we also do a seperate list for them. So to me it's only normal to include them.
