iCM Forum's Favorite Italian Movies
Posted Image
Join and help to create Italian Movies list that will make all other Italian Movies list become obsolete! ;).

I'm not going to set rules for which movies are admissible and which are not. If you feel a movie is Italian (and good enough of course to include in your list) than you can include it. When in doubt about a movie I'm sure there are users who can help you.
But to give some guidelines as to what to search for: you can look at production country, language and/or the nationality of the director/crew.

The deadline is 12 June 2015

  • Shorts, mini-series and TV-episodes from anthology series where the episodes are unrelated, are allowed.
  • Lists can be any length.
  • Lists can be ranked or unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked. I'm not accepting partially ranked list. Partially ranked list, that still are submitted, will be considered as unranked.
  • imdb-lists or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)

Scoring for ranked lists: Half-life = 50 (but can be tweaked if necessary)
Scoring for unranked lists: Every film on your list receives the same number of points (the average of what they would have received if your list was ranked).

Participants = 38

IMDb search to make things easier:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?countries=it&my_ratings=restrict&sort=my_ratings&view=simple

Includes several non-Italian films but adding &languages=it results in several Italian films not being dsplayed (La Terra Trema because it's in Sicilian, silents as well I guess).
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?countries=it&my_ratings=restrict&sort=my_ratings&view=simple&languages=it
Don't forget to check for titles not displayed as well (via the first search link)! Missing are La terra trema, Journey to Italy, Senza pietÓ, ...

Do you guys include Italo westerns like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly? Well, I won't...

Again IMDb search shows "interesting" results so I have the following ones show up:

Muerte de un ciclista
Serpico
The Comfort of Strangers
The Train
Route One USA
Avanti!
Don't Look Now
Das wei▀e Band
Coffee and Cigarettes
╔tat de siŔge

I guess none of these qualify.

If I were to make list right now it'd be too short, though I'll get back to this thread eventually.

Bal3x, wouldn't it serve poll's purpose better to exclude those French and Spaghetti titles? It's between you and poll admin though.

Sure, I can do that, but the French titles you're referring to are written by Italians whereas Leone is indeed Italian so I see no issue with including him?

Like I said I don't set rules on what movies can be in lists, so am not going to decide aboyr that. It's completely up to to ball3x in this instance.

The official list on icm may set an example. If it includes Spaghetti titles, I see no issue with including them. I don't think it includes French titles.

No problem, mate, thanks for noticing, I actually did remove a number of French titles that are certainly not eligible as they were only produced in Italy without any other connection, but I did leave some of the French-Italian ones, I think it's not a big deal :)

What Italian movies will I be missing if I only use this link?

I'd rather use a link which includes several non-Italian movies to remove, than using an incomplete link and adding stuff manually.

None with this link (it doesn't inlcude the language filter) unless there are Italian movies that aren't tagged as Italian films.

The second link doesn't include Italian films that have another primary language (like Sicilian or English).

You could also first make your list with the second search link and then add the few missing ones through the first search.

Actually, there's nothing more Italian, than Spaghetti westerns. At least in my book. :P

Since this thread does not specifically state that only Italian language films should be included, I assume that languages used in the film are irrelevant. Director and country production are more important in such lists correct?

I have a hard time deciding wether I should include The Good, The Bad...... or Once Upon a Time in the West. I don't know a lot about spaghetti westerns, so if you look at it like that, the only Italian about it is the director and the production country (which means where the money comes from, right?). The Good... was shot in Spain with a Hollywood lead actor. Once... was shot in Mexico. So why exactly is it Italian?

I don't call Robocop a Dutch movie, because the director is Dutch.

If I would include The Good... it would be on top of my list, which would feel a bit awkward.

You do have a point Joachim.

Keep in mind though that Sergio Leone's style is what brought the italian spaghetti westerns their great fame to begin with. Maybe he went a bit mainstream with casting hollywood actors, but that was his way of making the genre more well known throughout the world. Him along with Ennio Morricone's excellent music. Ennio is also Italian ofc, and this union of the two has been called quite often the Italian trademark of great spaghetti westerns. So you do understand why one may have qualms about some of those english language films. The good the bad and the ugly in particular that you mentioned is one of those few films that stand as a testament to that Italian genre of films.

I agree with Robocop of course even if I would not be that surprised if someone included it in a Dutch list. Same as Trier's films which can be considered as Danish even if not all are shot in Denmark. It's all a matter of perspective of course.

if you take The Good the Bad & the Ugly, look at the full crew:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060196/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm

it's not just the director & the money. It's a film made by Italians: writers, director, cinematographer, editor, composer, pretty much every major role in making the film is an Italian - with exception of the lead acting roles.

shot in Spain, but think about all the Hollywood films which shoot in other countries - we still call them Hollywood without question.

look at it like this: Robocop is an American film with a Dutch director. Leone's spag westerns are Italian films with American lead actor(s).
