iCM Forum's Favourite French Films

Time to choose your favourite French films. By French I mean films from France. If you are unsure that a movie should count or not (perhaps it's co-produced or something) just ask.

- Lists from IMDB or ICM are ok
- Fully ranked or unranked only
- Short films, long films, episodic stuff (miniseries, not tv shows), an episode from Tous les garçons et les filles de leur âge... (which I know A LOT of you will be voting for, at least for one of them) are all ok

For now, I will set the due date to July 5th, 2015 at 11:59 PM EST but it's up for debate.

SUBMIT A LIST! OR ELSE...

Dope! A French poll was the first poll I participated in after I joined. Will submit my list soon.

There are already 2 films where I'm not sure if they count or not. Welcome to New York and The Missing Picture.

Also even though the film is in English, I think that Mr. Freedom counts.

It's up to date from last year's poll so I'm submitting it. I'll watch some more French films of course.

So what about guys like Frédéric Back and the Dardennes? Back was born and educated in France (emigrated to Canada in 1948), and probably considered Canadian, but the Dardennes come from Wallonia and most of their films are in French.. Also how about Polanski? I'd imagine his US films normally would not be eligible, but how about the other work?

Afaik, most of the Dardennes films are set in Belgium. The big question therefore is whether this is a "French language films" poll or a "films from France" poll.

Edit: and I think I would only include Polanski's French films, just like Kieslowski's French films.

Right, that's my understanding as well :) But indeed perhaps a distinction needs to be made regarding French language or French films - in a way it's an asset to have people like the Dardennes eligible since otherwise they are being excluded, - on the other hand, if it's decided that it's strictly films from France then we need to stick to it.

Polanski was born in France and made a bunch of French films. Also, his wife is French (not that that has to do with anything). Definitely include his French films if you feel so inclined. His Polish/English films probably not though.

IMDB search link: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?countries=fr&languages=fr&my_ratings=restrict&sort=my_ratings&view=simple
(I also add &lists=!lsXXXXXXXXX for my French list)

but double check with http://www.imdb.com/search/title?countries=fr&my_ratings=restrict&sort=my_ratings&view=simple&lists=!lsXXXXXXXXX
as the first link is missing a few movies (In my case: Code Inconnu, Ballet mecanique, Early Cinema (Melies), La rivière du hibou, Last tango in paris (does it count?))

So,
should I remove those?
- The Dardennes
- Chantal Akerman (especially Jeanne Dielman)
- Last Tango in Paris (should count imo)

I'm including Franco-Belgian (e.g. Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani, but no Charles Dekeukeleire)
and Franco–Swiss (e.g. Georges Schwizgebel) films/filmmakers because whatever. And yes, 'Rapture', too.

Very nice list!

Rapt may be borderline french, it plays and is shot entirely in Switzerland. But I'd include it too, if I would have like it more.

lol, i wasn't talking about the 2009 rapt. Rapt is from 1934, there was no Cesar back then. (Besides, Cesar has nominations that are considered ineligible by some voters, like fe those by the Dardennes - Even Polanskis' Ghost Writer has a nomination)
