Degrees of Separation Challenge

Posted Image

Goal:

Watch as many movies as you can, where each film you watch has to have some connection to the film you watched just before it.

Level 1 (the starting point) for everybody is Vertigo (No one chimed in with a recommendation funky can't be bother to think of anything else so you're all stuck with this. yet again.) Vertigo imdb and iCM

(This film is the starting point but you don't have to watch it. So your first movie can be anything as long as you connect it to Vertigo.)

You don't need the same type of connection between films, there are many ways to connect movies :

- same actor in it
- same director
- same country
- same year
- same genre
- same list on ICM
- same theme
- &c.

Rules:
- A feature film (Anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry
- A total of 40 minutes of short films count as one entry (you don't need to watch them consecutive)
- For Mini-Series (40 minute episodes or longer) each episode counts as an entry.
- For Mini-Series with shorter episodes (25 minutes or so), the 40 minute rule applies.
- rewatch all the fuckin movies you want. goddamn, people.
- Add the previous movie watched and the connection to the movie you watched now to your post, example:

example. 0. Vertigo - San Francisco - 1. Dirty Harry - A rumination on number of shots fired - 2. Django Unchained - Oscar for Best Original Screenplay - 3. Ghost (yep)

Challenge runs July 15th thru August 14th.

Copy-pasted from bubar's opening post of the previous iteration of this challenge. Thanks, bubar! Also, previous thread in case you're confused by the rules. also, apparently I did this one last time. huh.

Apologies for the late start but totally not my fault. and I still like that alt poster for Vertigo. obvs not Saul fuckin' Bass but still pretty groovy.

yay.

I find this challenge difficult because I like to plan out my watchings and that can be difficult to do here because well... I'd like to go beyond connections like "oh that same actor and that same town and same director" or whatever but connections other than those can be hard to make if you haven't seen the films yet!

but I have made a list of like 5 to start out with.

there's nothin wrong with that.

it was hard making one decision over another with my list. it could have easily turned into a web of connections rather than something linear.

0. Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958) - A single word title just like...
1. Sodrásban (Gaál, 1964) - Interesting, very nice photography, a pleasant rural summertime setting and the right not-too-slow pace. Many characters are too shallow though so I can't tell which one is which. 7/10

- No rewatches (unless you really want to rewatch something. I'm not against rewatches)
We should ditch this rule completely. It's ridiculous. Rewatches should be encouraged.

Agreed... I don't understand why rewatches should be discouraged... Rewatches are fun and enlightening.

Sounds great! I'll be extremely busy the first two weeks of August. I'm participating in a 48 Hour Film Challenge and I'm going to try to film a segment of a short film before an actress leaves to go back to France. But I will try to watch & connect as much as possible. I love this challenge. :) <3

it was the rule for the third latest edition of this challenge and I just copy-pasted it over from there when last I hosted this challenge and added the parenthetical and then just copy pasted it again. so the last sentence of the statement is the most true. I'm not against rewatches.

I also don't have a problem if, say, you watch like 5 films in a day and then order those films in not exactly the order you watch them. again, this is a 'no one knows if you don't tell us' sort of thing.

but this does not extend to, like, moving a film you watched on the 30th in between films you watched on the 19th. if you mark something down, it stays.

You know, I was aware that this challenge should have started and hadn't.

As I recall, when I tried this the first time it came up, there was a rule that one couldn't use the same type of connection twice in a row. Anyway, I got in such a muddle exploring all the viable connections (didn't have KG yet), that I gave up. The five of a kind challenge suits me better; it's along somewhat the same lines but encourages more focus.

I love this challenge, but unfortunately don't have the time to pursue it. I find myself finding connections at random in films that I do watch. If anyone is interested, here's my list from a couple of years ago when film 0 was Lawrence of Arabia

Man, Walter, I'm impressed! Wouldn't have thought of things that were on the same list.

Now all we need is a Greasemonkey script that will tell us what movie X has in common with movie Y.

PS. I've worked out the beginnings of a plan, so I guess I'm in.

I'm in. Not going to plan, but I'll try to make a connection for every movie that I watch. I won't be watching lots of movies, though, because I'm mainly watching AH presents atm.

0. Vertigo (1958)
Is in IMDB's Top 250, just like…
1. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

0. Vertigo (1958) - 9/10 - with James Stewart, who was also in
1. Broken Arrow (1950) - 6/10

The romance subplot in this western felt really tacked on.

No need to reorder, if I can't find a connection I simply skip the title (for this challenge).

I love this challenge, but I did come up with it :whistling:

I'm kind of getting back into films by doing the one from every year challenge in order so going to try and incorporate it into this one but I'm giving myself the rule that I can't use the same link twice as it would be too easy to say same decade as or silent or both b&w etc..

I'll see how it goes anyway - I may have to watch other films than in year order and then try and get back on track :)

0. Vertigo (1958) - is based on a novel as is
1. Himmelskibet (1918) - 7/10 - decent early sci-fi from Denmark
