There are 2 things to talk about with The Promising Boy

What kind of a suck fucks puts their email in the first 6 minutes of a movie they ripped?

Also, if I ride a motorcycle, I'm wearing this:

Posted Image

1. Dečko koji obećava [The Promising Boy] (1981) 6/10 maybe 7/10
2. Muerte de un ciclista [Death of a Cyclist] (1955) 6/10

They both have a somewhat similar anti-establishment theme, but the Serbian films is easily the more exciting of the two - especially the soundtrack.

1. Decko koji obecava
2. Muerte de un ciclista

The members of the most prominent New Wave band, Šarlo Akrobata, also star in the film- they act as Slobodan's band. Aleksandar Berček (Slobodan) jumped instead of one of their members:

This is their best known song "Nobody like me".

If someone's interested about specific tunes, I'll gladly direct him to the link.

Should I be a fan of some kinds of music in order to appreciate Mario's choice? I really feel cold towards its characters. Along with The Banquet this one make the least favorite films in Round 2.
And finally I get the chance to watch the infamous Death of Cyclist. However, it is not that great as I expected before. Solid but nothing impresses me.

It's not about the music, but overquestioning of social norms and search for own personal way instead of otherwise predetermined place in universe.

Yet if you see nothing wrong about Slobodan's milieu, I can't help you with that.

1. Dečko koji obećava 8/10
2. Muerte de un ciclista 7.5/10

The Spanish film is nicely shot and well-acted, but I expected more to get from such highly regarded work. Also, Bardem's depth of frame couldn't match the bulk of subversive messages that DKO is rich with, nor I get much to think about it later.

EDIT: Voting deadline should be put below the topic's title, as its description.

You had translated lyrics only for songs that matter... those of Slobodan's band. Other songs are YU punk classics and I didn't translate them 'cause too much dialogue is never appreciated.

EDIT: As I said, a film file with song translations is here on Private section, not at YouTube.

Better That I Wear Short Haircut - PEKING DUCK (Novi Sad classic punk)

Let Nothing Bothers You - DIRTY THEATER (Zagreb new wave)

The Promising Boy - 6.5

It was "promising" until he got hit in the head for the first time. And with each subsequent hit in the head, the film went downhill but fortunately not by a great degree. But I gotta appreciate two things: It was never boring and soundtrack was cool.

And it seems if I like two movies almost equally, I seem to go with the one with boobs. Happened with Mexico and Chile. Nothing intentional here, just a subconscious decision  So now for me, like some of UEFA champions league matches, a draw would ensure Serbia to go through here. :P

1. Death of a Cyclist (1955)
2. The Promising Boy (1981)

I liked Mario's choice, it's certainly above its low reputation (abroad). Provocatively written and well directed, especially the first third. Even after the hit, its foreseeable grotesque tone is mostly controlled (this part reminds me the Almodóvar of that time -surely sortile9io knows about movida madrileña-). The ending is great too. But, wait a minute, this is like that Israeli movie in round 1, isn't it?

Death of a Cyclist is one of Bardem's great achievements (The Lovemaker, Nothing Ever Happens). Technically flawless (photo, editing or art direction are not usually strong points of Spanish cinema in the 50s), Bardem maintains an intense level of suspense in a work of social criticism.

Yeah she was ready to ditch everything for a single fuck and start a new life with his daughter's bf; I find this scene funnier than every single second of Black Cat, White Cat, so this is where our cultural differences arise.

AG & zhangalan, you didn't check the film.

Yes, it was also quite funny how he forced himself on her and how she came to realize that she wasn't being raped but fondly fucked. Also, loved the inventive lyrics of the Iggy Pop song.

1. Dečko koji obećava 7/10
2. Muerte de un ciclista 5/10

I agree with frbrown that Dečko koji obećava was the more exciting of the two. Dečko koji obećava has a high pulse throughout though I feel like it rushes towards an ending after the second hit to the head and I was a bit confused there with the sudden wedding (?). While it has nihilistic tendencies it has enough humor and satire (the Yugoslav TV joke was good, though I feel like I've seen it before someplace) to not go overboard and as a rebel film it is pretty good. It felt a bit like Ferris Bueller's Day Off at times though grounded in a somewhat seedy reality (that band apartment especially). It was a little awkward the way the band was introduced visually with the concert but the songs fit the movie well.

Muerte de un ciclista has nothing interesting to say about anything and it has a very forced and dumb ending. The movie is wasting a lot of time on one aspect of being afraid of getting caught but lays it all out in dialogue instead of trusting in / directing a more subtle acting from the actors. Instead every time the camera lingers on a face it adds nothing to the depth of the film. The script does at least give the story an interesting turn but it is ruined by that ending. Muerte de un ciclista does have a nice look to it though and is better edited of the two, Dečko koji obećava has some disrupting scene transitions at times.
