I still need 20 checks for a bronze award on the Golden Foundation list so I'll try to watch some in August. I'll also try to watch all the available Czech/Slovak films on the UNESCO list. Very interested in this new auto update program.

Does anyone have any Czech comedy recommendations for me (preferably something similar to Happy End, Zítra vstanu a oparím se cajem, or Jak utopit doktora Mrácka aneb Konec vodniku v Cechách)?

1. Údoli Vcel (Valley of the Bees) (Frantisek Vlácil, 1968) 8/10

Posted Image

Frantisek Vlácil's first movie after Marketa Lazarová (1967). A couple of great shots but overall it isn't as good as Marketa Lzarová. It does have a great villain though.
It's going on my <500 list. 8/10

Two czech comedies that I like are Babi leto and Lemonade Joe.
I don't think that they are similar to the two films you mentioned (I haven't seen them), but they are very interesting.

I mentioned 3 films. Lemonade Joe is by the same director as Happy End, so I guess I should make that high priority.

Thanks, kingink and HVM. I guess I'll be watching Lemonade Joe next.

Edit: @kingink: I'll have to watch more of his films before I can answer that question, but Happy End is great. Judging from screenshots, Tajemství hradu v Karpatech looks like something I would probably like, so maybe I'll watch that after Lemonade Joe.

Yes, Oldřich Lipský is revered greatly and people quote his films on a daily basis.
Of course comedy is something that divides this forum and I don't know what the subs are like. Hope you guys find something you'll enjoy.

It hasn't updated jeroeno's second entry. Did you change the time for updates? Because we're past the 15 minutes. Is it possible that the bold letters messed with the script? The format seems right.

The script is working. Jeroeno made a mistake in the post. He accidentally posted it as "1. Slnko v Sieti (The Sun in a Net) (Stefan Uher, 1962) 8/10" and fixed it after the script had already read the post.

edit: I restarted the script so the correct number is now in the first post.

Exactly. I thought I had to start with 1. on every new post and the script would add it automatically. Now at least we know that's not working  :P B)

OK. You did excellent my dear friend with this script.
And in case of a mistake that the script won't recognize, we can just make a new post with the correct format. I think I've got it now ^_^

Sure. The script goes through your post line by line. If the line starts with the following pattern: NUMBER PERIOD SPACE TEXT (and the other two mentioned in the first post), it extracts the number from that line and stores it. The TEXT is ignored. It can be anything. If it finds a higher number in the same post it replaces the previous number with the higher number. The highest number it finds is then used as your "number of seen films" for that post. If it finds another (newer) post made by you and it again finds a number from that post that matches the pattern, the old number is again replaced. The number it finds in the newer post doesn't have to be higher than the number in an earlier post. That's how the script works, it only cares about the lines that start with that pattern and only the number is important. If you need to quote someone with that pattern or you need to post a numbered list or something then use the !seen N command described in the first post.

You should delve more into your own / Slovak national cinema and bring up some unknown gems outside of usual canon + share with us.

1. Noční hovory s matkou/Late Night Talks with Mother (Němec, 2001) 4.5/10

Jan Němec, the "enfant terrible of the Czech New Wave," goes digital camera and in an hour of fish-eye lens shots :yucky: argues with his dead mother.

2. Příchozí z temnot/The Arrival from the Darkness (Kolár, 1921) 7/10 plot summary

A 1921 Gothic horror with flashbacks within dreams. Pretty rad! Pity the newly restored version isn't commercially available yet. DON'T watch what's on ulož.to.

3. Kreutzerova sonáta/The Kreutzer Sonata (Machatý, 1926) 7/10

A Tolstoy adaptation. J.W. Speerger was dope as Pozdnyshev.

4. Shorts I
a) Oratorio for Prague (Němec, 1968) 7/10 Rewatch
b) Fotografovanie obyvatelov domu/The Photography of Inhabitants of One House (Trančík, 1968) 6.5/10
c) V síti času/In the Net of Time (Uldrich, 1989) One does not simply shoot 20-minute docus about Vláčil.

2. Neco z Alenky (Alice) (1988) - 4.5/10 This movie is just truly terrifying. I don't think I've ever seen such a weird/disturbing kids' movie. The stop-motion is great along with a lot of the other effects, but this film is just very odd. It seems a lot darker than all of the other film adaptations of Alice in Wonderland I've seen (though they're usually pretty freaky no matter what).
