Ever heard about irony, mjf? Anyway, why use Chinese characters? It comes across as a bit of an affectation. Nobody here (but zh) reads/writes Chinese anyhow.

I think there is another Chinese forum member (Edward5) here.
And Chinese can be classified into traditional and simplified Chinese. What Art types can be both forms.

1. The Executioner
2. In the Heat of the Sun

I'm not sure foreigners can get some of The Executioner's highlights, the background, as the wedding scene: A large and ostentatious wedding has preceded José Luis and Carmen’s relatively low-key wedding, and even as our hero and heroine are getting hitched, the deacons and choir boys are busy setting the church to order: rolling up the carpet, removing the prayer cushions, snuffing out the candles. The candles next to the priest and the young couple are snuffed out one by one, until only one is left, offering a meagre light, by which the priest is straining to read the service. And all of them – José Luis, Carmen, Amadeo, their handful of relatives and friends – end up shuffling along, clustering around that one burning candle too.

Or some of the jokes by supporting characters:

that the baby's normal!
That my father's not hereditary,
damn it! How should I tell you?

I did too, but I don't remember the Chinese film being a comedy (or at least comedy wasn't the main genre).

The Chinese film isn't a comedy, but in my opinion there were definitely some parts that were supposed to be funny, especially in the beginning.

Actually out of the 3 Berlanga's most acclaimed works, I find Welcome Mr Marshall the easiest one to follow and the most entertaining one, yet it seems to be his least critically praised one out of the three.

I might re-watch El Verdugo if I get the time.

Hm, close for me and both films aren't exactly my taste. I think I give my edge to the Spanish one because it had more single moments that are better for me. Like the earlier mentioned wedding scene in the church or the splendid scene before he goes to "work" shortly before the end.

1. El verdugo
2. Yang guang can lan de ri zi

Quick thoughts on both:

El verdugo / The Executioner (1963, Luis García Berlanga)
Black comedy about a guy who marries an executioner's daughter and later on has to take on the job of executioner himself, a bit against his will. A bit on the talky side, but works better when the jokes get visual. Perhaps a bit of the humour was alos lost in translation.
6.5/10

Yang guang can lan de ri zi / In the Heat of the Sun (1994, Wen Jiang)
Solid slice of life and coming of age stuff about a group of rather rebelious teens growing up in China right around the time of the cultural revolution. Some nice black humour, but I didn't like some turns the film takes later on and couldn't fully get the main character.
6.5/10

I've voted in every Spain match - sortile keeps picking classics that I've already seen.

1. El verdugo

2. In the Heat of the Sun

The Chinese movie was OK, the Spanish one is a masterpiece - funny, energetic and lively, despite the subject matter, three great leads, elegant long takes, and a perfectly handled change in mood at the end.

Both of these look good so I'm actually going to try to find the time to participate in this round. If nothing else it'll be two entries cleared off my watchlist.

I wouldn't watch any of these movies a second time. Not my taste. I bet the Spanish film would be funnier if I was from Spain. The grandpa character is very likeable. The Chinese film got kind of strange at the end...El Verdugo wins my vote by a hair.

I believe this is the current score:

I know it's a bit out of topic.
Just curious, is there any Eng sub for Lombardi's Under the Skin and In the Mouth of Wolf?

I plan to manage Peru in the next World Cup, and that's why I decide to watch some Lombardi's.

In short: no.
La boca del lobo's pot was claimed a while ago (and the user hasn't been online for 8 weeks). If people contribute we might be able to push subs for Bajo la piel.

You just need to watch more.
Being a manager is tough work - time to get serious, zh?
