I'm in.

You missed the anime lists. There are links to some of them in the animation challenge, and there are many others but I don't know how many you want to include.

1. Jinsei no onimotsu - Burden of Life (1935) - Heinosuke Gosho

Very good Japanese family drama with plenty of subtle though great comedy included. Features an all-star cast.

I agree. I really need to rewatch the first few Kurosawa films I saw.

Anyhow, I'm in. It's about time I participate in a challenge again!
Not sure whether I'll be very active though, my holidays just finished and kid stuff and all that. :)

Ive always though the no re watch rule meant that you was not allowed to watch the same movie twice in the same month. I really think we should be allowed to see a movie we first saw 10 years ago and it will count. Just my opinion.

Rewatches are allowed. But if you only watch Japanese films you've seen and know you like then it's not much of a challenge is it.

Maybe rewatches can count for 0.5 points? You can do two rewatches and write them as one entry, so magician's script can function as intended.

1. Yukiguni (Snow Country) 10/10
Only in the Donald Richie. Design, mise en scène, actors, just perfect. And a Nobel prize adapted. Just OK.

2. Akanishi Kakita (Capricious Young Man) 6/10
Lack of unity in tone, too many characters. The ending fight is interesting and the two superimpositions scenes are quite impressive. In about 25 years, Japan improved from neglected copies (like this one which suffered certainly of the pre-war and war bad conditioning) to the very best wide-screens and color films in cinema history...

3. Shitoyakana kedamono (The Graceful Brute) 7/10
A Kaneto Shinto's script which has all attribute of a stage play. He likes "huis clos" (Naked Island, Human, Dobu, are almost "huis clos") and he explained in his first autobiographic film, Story of a Beloved Wife, that he have read a lot of Occidental plays to improve his writing, and most of these plays are "huis clos" (it's also part of the Aristotelian unities and an important part of the tradition in the classic theater). So it's a strict huis-clos and the theatrical mode is perfectly intentional. For better or for worse. Everything, from the external context to the characters past, from external and new events to psychology, should be mentioned through the words instead of the images. That's more informations for the spectators, and less imagination & contemplation. Interesting and effective stylistic exercise on stage, for sure, and certainly one of the best sub-genre in cinema. And here, I just couldn't read properly each lines to get everything, like a screwball comedy played too quickly. No time to laugh, you have to follow the next joke... It should have been a genuine nightmare to translate.
Some situations are excellent, though. The characters could be all these immoral and brutal creatures in Imamura's cinema and love it. With a "stage play", you need great actors. The two parents are both great. Ayako Wakao has a minor role but she's perfect as usual.

I'll mostly be working on ICM Forum's Favorite Japanese Movies, Kinema Junpo Annual Top 10s, and Japanese pre-1960s Films Available Online With English Subtitles.

1. Akanishi Kakita AKA Capricious Young Man (1936)
2. Shunkinsho: Okoto to Sasuke AKA Okoto and Sasuke (1935)
3. Rajio no jikan AKA Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald (1997)
4. Konjiki yasha AKA The Golden Demon (1937) - 1st check
5. Aozora musume AKA The Blue Sky Maiden (1957)
6. Ringu AKA Ring (1998)
7. Hachigatsu no nureta suna AKA Wet Sand in August (1971)

Recommended: #3. A comical story about a radio station about to air a drama play where celebrity voice actors will read the story but the lead actress demands her character name be changed and from there the story starts to get more and more ridiculous.

Please tell me more about #7, magician.
The film begins and we see a gang raped girl ditched at the beach where she undresses from her torn clothes and goes for a swim. Our protagonist happens to be there at the same time and offers her a lift home. For the rest of the film we see a group of good-for-nothings attempt to rape other girls. It's basically a pinku film without tits. I gave it a 7 so it wasn't that terrible.

8. Red Peony Gambler 4 (8/10)
9. Red Peony Gambler 5 (8/10)
10. Violence Without A Cause (4/10)

I'm quite lost with the Red Peony series. I might watch it not in order but in that case, I don't care much as I rate everything 8/10 as a whole. The plot has no interest to me (and to be frank between the films, the link is never clear. The impression to watch always the same good film, like a Ozu. And I'm in love, so it explains my confusion...).

Here is some words dans la langue de l'amour about the character (putting the film in a "anti-films" list in reference to antiheroes):

And about another antiheros, Zatoichi :

L'amour est aveugle. Love is blind.
