Lists Due Dec 12

Rules:
1) Make a list of your favorite Film Noir films.
You can submit a list in one of three ways:
1. Imdb list (preferred)
2. ICM list
3. List of imdb urls if you can't make an imdb list.
Make sure your (imdb/icm) list is public!

2) There is no minimum or maximum number of films, but each film on your list must only be listed once.

3) Submit a link to your IMDB/ICM list here, by midnight PST Dec 10, 2015 (8AM GMT Dec 11). I will download all lists at the deadline, so feel free to submit an incomplete list and keep editing your list until the deadline.

4) I will assume your list is RANKED unless you specify otherwise.
Other than a ranked list you can submit your list in one of the following ways:
- Unranked: All films get the same number of points (Pts are determined by the length of your list, same amount of total points as if the list had been ranked).
- Partially ranked: Top X is ranked, rest is unranked
- Group ranked: You have to specify the groups that go together, all films in the group get the same number of points. (eg: 11-20, 21-30, 31-50, 51-100)

I don't know what Half life I'll use, maybe 30?

Some helpful tools for making an imdb list:
Imdb Helper: This Greasemonkey script lets you paste either movie titles or imdb urls all together and will search them in order, saving you from having to cut and paste one by one.
Linky A firefox addon that lets you highlight multiple links and copy all the urls together at once. Useful if you've already got an existing list on imdb you want to copy, or for copying advanced search results (like all movies you've rated above 9).

are we supposed to include only noirs in the strict sense (1940-1959 or so) or are proto- and neo-noirs also allowed?

(not sure if I participate though, have seen so few noirs)

Here's my list. I only used the noir-filter on IMDB, so I'm probably forgetting lots of other. All 8+.

PARTIALLY RANKED!
1-27 = ranked
rest = unranked

I didn't already have a list made up :O It's only a short one though, I just went with films tagged noir: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls031016698/

Looking through the other lists; Rebecca, Rope, Cat People, Casablanca, Lost Weekend, Leave Her to Heaven? I don't have a definition of what noir is, so do these really count? I've added them to mine just so they don't get left out anyway.

We're going to have an interesting list of non-Noirs :whistling:

I might add borderline cases at the end, but because I want this list to really represent noirs I'm going to put the real guys ahead of the list, even if I prefer other films. For instance I love Rebecca more than a ton of noirs, but it's not a super noir film, frankly.

If none of those are technically noir I'll remove them. I just don't really know what makes a film noir. Should I just go by IMDb definition?

No, Imdb has A Fugitive from a chain gang and Fury (which are proto-noir)

I guess it depends how lax you want to be with the definition. If you want to stick with the classic period, than it's 1940-1955ish, but it's really up to the individual voters, I guess. If we include neo-noir and proto-noir, then sky is the limit really.

Leave Her To Heave, Casablanca, Lost Weekend are absolutely noir. Rebecca, Cat People and Rope are noir enough but I can see why some may not consider them. If Rope didn't have the one shot gimmick and was B&W no one would question its noir status. Same with Cat People without the supernatural element.

Casablanca and The Lost Weekend don't have the noir-tag on IMDB, so I missed them. I'll add them to my list. I'll probably have to change the part of my list that is ranked, because I'm ranking my 9's and 10's and my 8's are unranked below that. Casablanca and The Lost Weekend are both 9. I'll let you know just before the deadline which part is ranked.

Damn I didn't know we would have such a nomination poll. :P

I think I had this category quite overlooked this year. Time to remedy that.. at least till the deadline.

What are some examples of noir that aren't on one of the three official lists? (250 Quintessential, More Noirs..., and the IMDb list.) Trying to decide if it's better for me to just rank the films I've seen on those lists, rather than scanning my entire watched list.

I think using those lists is probably enough. There are certainly noirs not on those lists, but unless you've been actively seeking them out I can't imagine running into them.

I used my criticker collection: http://www.criticker.com/?fl&filter=e4121 as a starting point.

I updated my list. I added lots of titles from the official ICM-lists, that are not tagged "noir" on IMDB. I don't think I've got anything left to add.

Peaceful, you can mark my list as:
1 to 53 ranked
rest unranked

Here's a top 50. Gone purist and predictable but y'know, great is great.

Might add an addendum of proto & neo noirs if I get round to it.

My list:
Paint It Noir

I included three titles that aren't tagged "film noir" on imdb: To Have and Have Not, Shadow of a Doubt and Gaslight. Be sure not to overlook these if you like them.

Cases of doubt are the gangster films from the 1930s: Little Caesar (1931), Scarface (1932) and 20,000 Years in Sing-Sing (1932). According to imdb they are film noir, but I'm not sure if those should be included.

I didn't include Casablanca, because that's a romantic wartime drama. I think a film noir has to be a crime film.

To Have and Have Not is practically a remake of Casablanca. It makes no sense to exclude one but not the other

Neither one is very noir, IMO.

I am not including proto noir from the 30's and earlier. I might make an exception for something that is strikingly noir from say 1939, but that's about it. I am also not including Neo-noir

Well, sweet smell of success is also tagged as noir even on icm. It didn't have any crime or noir style narration though.

Casablanca on the other hand, may have been more of a drama as some people here said, it's stark direction & narration style though is much closer to the noir style than many other films that are tagged as noir.

Should we just use best judgment on cases like that? Or just go by noir tag of imdb or icm ? This is really confusing.

Sweet Smell of Success and Casablanca are both clearly noir. I would say if it's on a noir list and made between 1940 and 1960 it's almost certainly noir. I'll make a list of nominations to help. There are edge cases, of course, but to me edge cases are things like Ramrod or Cat People, not SSoS or Casablanca.
