This is why everyone was so worried about your absence:

Thanks. Yes, I did smell it, and I looked through (and enjoyed) the whole results list when I "got back." Yeah, it pained me that I didn't contribute to it, but on the other hand trying to concoct an ordered list of my favorite Russian films would have been painfully difficult as well.

Currently making my way through Gostya is budushchego, a Soviet sci-fi for kids in five parts. Wacky, goofy fun.

Clarification: it's not a film for kids in five parts; it's a film for kids, and the film is in five parts. B)

thank you for the clarification. I knew the Soviets were into some weird experiments but that would've been a bit too far.

1. Horící ker / Burning bush (Cz 2013)

Prague looks as gray and sad as I remember it when we were there in 1988....

I'm reading Betty Medsger's The Burglary, about the activist raid on the Media FBI office also depicted in the film 1971. This is quite some counterpoint to that. And repression has only gotten more and more sophisticated since then, everywhere.

2. Ukradená vzducholod / The stolen airship (Cz 67, Zeman, 90m)

Zeman does Jules Verne again. Delightful nonsense, live action & animation, all sorts of fanciful air travel.

note on English subs

1. Venkovsky ucitel The Country Teacher (Bohdan Slama, 2008) Czech Republic 5.5/10

Great until about halfway through, when things turned, well, preposterous, ruining most of the construction up to that point. Some amazing footage of the actors actually delivering a calf (twice): farm fanciers need to bookmark this one.

01. Constans, by Krzysztof Zanussi (1980) 8,5/10

This is a very rich and deep movie, with a haunting score by Wojciech Kilar. I strongly recommend it and will add it to my 500<400 list.

Oh how I envy you the opportunity to have walked the city I love and live in before the mass tourism kicked in...

The other day year British Pathé opened their archives and they have some Prague takes (from the days of Holland's film) featured. I don't subscribe to the narrative -- a bit too pathetic to my tastes -- but the history is still there in pictures.

I'm in as well. There are a couple of "Eastern Europe" films nominated for DtC that I'll see, which will get me higher up the ranks of the Polish Film Institute list, probably the only official list I have some chances of one day standing out on, compared to others.

So far I saw:

#1 Nunta de piatră/The Stone Wedding (1972, Dan Piţa, Mircea Veroiu) (Romania) 4

1. Guest(s) from the Future (Gostya iz budushchego)(1985) -- Consists of five one-hour episodes. If this were an item on a "Favorite nostalgic children's films from the Soviet Era" list, I would think it was totally appropriate. Instead, it's on LiveJournal's list of the Russian top 100, which is fairly inexplicable. It's just another indication as to how the Russian Guild list is a far more serious and substantive list than the LiveJournal.

Anyway, this is quite slow for a children's program today, and it features endless footage of uninteresting foot chases, but it was fun on the whole in a schlocky, time-capsule sort of way ... a form of real time travel after all.
