iCM Forum's Favourite Movies of the 1980s
Posted Image

The 1980s; the decade of materialism and consumerism, glasnost and perestroika, Reagan and Thatcher, yuppies, greed, coke, AIDS, MTV, Nintendo, IBM and Macintosh, the collapse of communism in eastern Europe and fall of the Berlin Wall, the Tiananmen Square protests and many other wars, elections, coups, crises, disasters, deaths, births, sportmatches, inventions and trends, which can''t all be mentioned in this very brief recap. It's the decade many of us were born in. It's also a decade that has a bad reputation in movie history. Here is a list of movies that were made in the eighties that are worth watching according to the members of the iCM Forum.

Please feel free to discuss the list, the films, and any entries that you're happy or unhappy about, whether you submitted a list or not, but please try to be courteous when doing so.
When quoting a post with images it's best if you remove the image unless it's directly relevant to what you're posting.

Scoring for ranked lists: Half-life = 50
Scoring for unranked lists: Every film on your list receives the same number of points (the average of what they would have received if your list was ranked).

This looks like it'll be interesting already. We shall see.

I really wish I got around to ranking my list. Not all films are created equal, and there are ones on my list that I like a whole lot more than others, but, it won't make any difference. Oh well. Hopefully they do alright!
(Just out of curiosity, how many points are each of my films worth? I submitted an unranked list of 95.)

Well don't I feel bad now for not putting Land Before Time and Neverending Story on my list. Both were childhood favorites, but I haven't seen either in two decades so I thought it best to leave them off.

8 Diagram Pole Fighter has been on my watchlist forever. Maybe I'll get around to watching it this week.

The Land Before Time, Spaceballs, Labyrinth, The Never-Ending Story, The Fox and the Hound, A Christmas Story, Conan the Barbarian, TRON, Big, Re-Animator, The Little Mermaid, The Snowman, Poltergeist? Looks like a lot of voters are getting back in touch with their inner teenager. (OK, I did vote for Big myself.)

yeah I'll admit to a fair few nostalgia picks on my list. I'm more a 90s child but 80s films were a big chunk of what made it to TV growing up.

I always feel a huge, alienated break with my generation when it comes to movies. I'm the perfect age to be all gooey for John Hughes/Dirty Dancing/Purple Rain/Beetlejuice/E.T./The Blue Lagoon/Flashdance/Footloose/Poltergeist/TRON/Risky Business/Gremlins/Revenge of the Nerds/St. Elmo's Fire/Stand by Me/The Princess Bride/The Lost Boys/Goonies/Ghostbusters/Indiana Jones/S.E. Hinton/Clark Griswold, but none of that stuff was ever close to my heart. I haven't even seen all of those films. When I was in high school, my big movie heroes were Woody Allen, Jack Nicholson and Kubrick. And while I do have a small "soft spot" for isolated '80s-teen films like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Back to the Future, Big and Say Anything, the '80s movies that I'm most nostalgic/sentimental about are the offbeat, indie-type movies that were such a major revelation for me at the time and made my movie tastes take a sharp turn away from the mainstream. Films like...mmm...Aria, Bagdad Cafe, Bliss, Blue Velvet, Brazil, Gregory's Girl, Koyaanisqatsi, Liquid Sky, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, My Beautiful Laundrette, My Life as a Dog, Paris Texas, The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover, Straight to Hell, Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, Subway, Sugarbaby, The Coca-Cola Kid, The Gods Must Be Crazy, The Meaning of Life, After Hours, Birdy, Choose Me, Comfort & Joy, Diner, Diva, Repo Man, Ran, River's Edge, She's Gotta Have It, Sid & Nancy, Buckaroo Banzai, The Thin Blue Line, Trouble in Mind, True Stories, Vagabond and Wings of Desire. Some of these movies have survived well in the historical canon, and some haven't. (Whatever happened to Alan Rudolph, Bill Forsyth and Percy Adlon?)

I don't really have any nostalgia for films I saw as a teenager, only ones I saw as a kid (probably because I started getting more interested in films at 14), but most of the films I liked as a kid I still think are solid films (and the ones I don't won't show up in my lists). And most for me were 90s films, so there's not much nostalgia in my 80s list (The NeverEnding Story, Alice in Wonderland (1985 TV Movie), Oliver & Company, Twilight Zone: The Movie and Pet Sematary are probably it). All of which either made me cry or freaked me out, what a wonderful childhood I had lol

I'm a big fan of quite a few on your 2nd list - likes of Alex Cox, Lynch, Wenders, Greenaway, Jarmusch all feature plenty on my list. Quite a few in my watchlist too & a couple I'll add  Didn't see many of these until a lot later though (and indeed some only v.recently) so they don't have quite the same era association.

I'm not big on a lot of the stuff which often gets cited as definitive 80s nostalgia, but definite soft spots for directors like Spielberg, Tim Burton & stuff like Gremlins, Back to the Future, Bill & Ted
