iCM Forum's Favourite Western Movies
Posted Image

Howdy pardner, tell me what your favorite Westerns are and I will make a list of what our favorite Western movies are. No matter if you are part of the Western maffia or don't really like the genre, no matter how long or short your list is, everyone is welcome to participate. The more list there are the better the final results gets.

I will set no rules on what movies are eligible, neither will I try to define the Western genre. You all can decide for yourself if a movie is your among your favorite Westerns movies or not. And if you really are in doubt about if specific movie can be considered a Western, you can always ask here.

The deadline is 1 July 2016

  • Shorts, mini-series and TV-episodes from anthology series where the episodes are unrelated, are allowed. Tv-series aren't allowed.*
*Imdb will be leading in this, but if you have good arguments exceptions to the rule can be made in consultation

  • Imdb-lists or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
  • Lists can be any length.
  • Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
  • Lists can be ranked or unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.
  • Partially ranked list aren't allowed.

Scoring for ranked lists: Half-life probably going to be 50, but that might change.
Scoring for unranked lists: Every film on your list receives the same number of points (the average of what they would have received if your list was ranked).

Some help:
Westerns you rated on IMDb
Westerns you rated in a IMDb list (replace X with the list id)
(Keep in mind this might not include all Westerns, since IMDb is not always the best in tagging genres)

Why is this link so long with all those type-restrictions?
If I just filter all my ratings on "western" I won't be missing anything, right?

1. Blazing Saddles

That's all :p

Actually I know I got a few collecting dust in some boxes that I really want to see before I make a list. Well, at least now I have a reason to sort them.

joachimt: And if you just pick westerns on imdb you will lose out on some of the Contemporary westerns, like movies about today's herders (Like Brokeback). We can all agree it's about cowboys, if that is enough for it to qualify.

I know I will be missing movies by only trusting the IMDb western-tag, but that's the case with the link posted by Lonewolf as well. That link filter on genre:western, but also on types (feature film, short, documentary, etc...). My question is only about the difference between my search-method and the one posted by Lonewolf.

I already have a list so I don't have to start from scatch making one. That is a relief.
I am not the biggest fan of westerns but I like the ones in my list a lot. I added my 7s as well in order to make it most interesting.

UNRANKED

Currently this only includes movies with the Western-tag on IMDb. I'll go through other people's lists to see which movies without that tag I should add.

Sure. Fuck Leone! And fuck Americans, Gringos don't know how to make westerns! If, unlike me, you have nothing against Gringos don't forget these American monkeys, though (not tagged as western on IMDb):

The only difference is that my link does indeed filter on type, so that tv-series (and videogames) don't show up in the results. I did so that people won't see their inclusion after clicking the link as an approval to nominate tv-series and to just help people (who do know they can't nominate those) with keeping tv-series out of their results. If you don't rate tv-series on IMDb there is no difference between your and my method.

Only movies I've given 8, 9 or 10 so quite a short list. But I'll see if I get to see some more the next two weeks

Are you guys adding Que Viva Mexico? I saw it tagged as a Western on imdb. It has a secondary tag on rym (meaning it has Western elements but it's not a Western). For now I don't think I'll add it, but I'm not really sure.

Why the dearth of westerns that feature the Native American perspective? Why the overload of stale genre exercises that celebrate and glorify the experience of white settlers in the Old West?

That's the problem with looking through other people's lists. I see movies for which I'm thinking: "I don't fully consider this a Western, but if enough people do and it will make the final list, I feel bad for not supporting it."

I'm not talking about BTTF3, because I don't like that enough to add it. I'm hesitating about "Po zakonu" and "The Gold Rush". Can anybody convince me why these can be considered Westerns? Maybe it's just my lack of knowledge about the genre, because I mainly think about cowboys and Indians.

The boundaries of the Western, like those of many genres, are fluid, undefined, flexible, and evanescent. People have defined the Western by imagery, plot, setting, geography, theme, and much more. You'll have to decide for yourself what you consider a Western.

This is the second list in which I see Ruggles of Red Gap. It's been a while since I saw it, but I just skipped through it again. I don't see how this is a Western. Can you explain? I'm not trying to criticize your choice, but I'm wondering if I should add it to my own list as well.

What a troll...
You just keep shutting your eyes to the genocide of Native Americans. You just keep lulling yourself to sleep with your wild reveries of being a whiskey-chugging, Eastwoodesque gunslinger. It's understandable that you choose to indulge in such laughable fantasies as it's far more comfortable for you to keep believing in the Marion Wayne brand of the Glorious Cowboy Wild West. The rest of us, however, want a realistic depiction of what went down, the outright slaughter and still ongoing ill-treatment of America's native population in particular. Methinks the real troll here is you...
