Howdy pardners, this are our two-hundred favorite Westerns. Enjoy.

Please feel free to discuss the list, the films, and any entries that you're happy or unhappy about, whether you submitted a list or not, but please try to be courteous when doing so.
When quoting a post with images it's best if you remove the image unless it's directly relevant to what you're posting.

Scoring for ranked lists: Half-life probably going to be 50, but that might change.
Scoring for unranked lists: Every film on your list receives the same number of points (the average of what they would have received if your list was ranked).

Kicking myself for missing the deadline (sans spurs -- no way I could have made it), but I'm looking forward to the results anyway. :shoot:

Which in this film's case is sorely needed. Bunch of horny bastards must have voted for that one.

It also has Brigitte Bardot, to make it bump up another point.

Two good ones on this first day: The Virginian and There Was a Crooked Man...

I highly recommend The Virginian for anyone interested in a theoretical or academic understanding of the Western. Robert Warshow was a film critic in the first half of the twentieth century whose essay "The Westerner" was one of the first theoretical attempts to understand the genre. Much of his analysis in the essay is about The Virginian. It isn't easy to find the essay (you'll probably have to get Warshow's book The Immediate Experience from your library), but it's a good read and not full of the usual obscure academic prose. I suggest reading the essay and then seeing the movie.

There Was a Crooked Man was a childhood favorite of mine. I rewatched it recently for maybe the first time in twenty years, and yeah, it's not great. But I still think it has a lot of fun moments. And any movie with Fonda and Kirk Douglas (not to mention Hume Cronyn, Burgess Meredith, and Warren Oates) is interesting. Plus, there's a shot of Douglas' naked butt if you're into that.

yay, Cockfighter is higher than I'd guessed

Just added Alferd Packer to my list. I shit my pants laughing when I first saw the trailer on a troma vhs back in the 90ies. Was a bit dissapointed when I saw the actual movie couple a years ago. But it has a Brakhage Cameo.

Alfred Packer was originally their student film at CU, and Brakage was one of the profs there.

It's kind of a blueprint for all the South Park stuff, actually.

This is in the OP of this results-thread. I guess by now you know which half-life it is, right? What did you use?

Btw, how many 2-vote movies are in the top 200?

Sounds like Gunman's Walk needs to be a western of the month.

But whatever happened to those?
